Dear Carole,
The below list of Genealogy has to be coming from Enoch Combs Sr. or his
Brother
William Combs that married Elizabeth Roe. The closeness is two great to
overlook. Enoch Combs Sr. and Abraham Combs associated with all these
families.
You can keep saying that it's likely Abraham Combs and Enoch Combs Sr. are
brothers but I tell you the clues make it more than obvious.
When Robert Clarke married Sarah Combs they had a son Thomas Clarke who
married Grace Greenwell, and they had a son named John Clarke who married
Eleanor Gough. On John Clarke's inventory dated 1756 is listed Enoch Combs
as next of Kin. Now William Combs born 1662( son of Enoch Combs Sr. and
Barbara(Hatton?), had a son Enoch Combs who died in 1755, one year before
this John Clarke (grandson of Robert Clarke and Sarah Combs)died. but Enoch
Combs who died 1755 had a son Enoch Combs and he is the one listed on John
Clarke's inventory. Now I ask the question, if all these Combs were
decendants of Enoch Combs Sr. then how could his decendants be next of kin
to the decendants of Abraham Combs daughter Sarah Combs who married my
ancestor Robert Clarke, unless Abraham Combs and Enoch Combs were brothers.
Cousins they are not.
Enoch Combs Sr. likely did not marry until 1660, and he came into the
province of Maryland about 1662 with only a son Enoch Combs Jr., William
Combs was born that same year. These Two are both sons of Enoch Combs Sr.
and 1st cousins to Sarah Combs Clarke who married Robert Clarke. I also
ask why would the decendants of Enoch Combs Sr. follow the Decendants of
Robert Clarke Sr. and Sarah Combs for two hundred years. William Combs who
married Elizabeh Roe, Abraham Combs, and Enoch Combs Sr., all have a
central person they associate with and that is Nicholas Lowe father of
Nicholas Lowe Jr. and Henry Lowe.
Why because William Combs who married Elizabeth Roe, Abraham Combs who
married 1st to ? and 2nd to a Margaret_____, Enoch Combs Sr who likely
married Barbara Hatton, and Archdale Combs who married Elizabeth Butler
widow of William Underwood, are all brothers, and they are all sons of John
Combs who married Margaret Archdale. it may not be obvious to the rest of
the group but it certainly is to me.
William Combs who married Elizabeth Roe is therefore the best choice as the
parents of the Richard Combs who married Ann Shertcliff

Hi Ida,
I just checked and your name is NOT on the list. When you took your little
short trip a while back, did you by any chance unsubscribe and, perhaps,
forget to subscribe again? I have no idea how else your name could have
gotten off of the list. Just go over to <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/combs
va/rootsweb.htm">Combs Roots Web Site for list mbrs to sub and unsub</A> nd
if this gets messed up during mail time go to
http://members.aol.com/combsva/rootsweb.htm ad re-sub. For any digests you
have missed follow these directions:
(1) Address email to:
COMBS-D-request@rootsweb.com
(2) Subject Heading:
archive
(3) Body of text:
get volume97/48
Has to be exact spacing and lower case, but the above email should cause you
to get COMBS-D V97 #48. 48 is just an example. You will want the one after
the last one you received through #72, which came today if you failed to
receive it.
Just enter the number you want in place of where #48 is shown above but, as
stated, follow exact case and spacing. Otherwise it will not retrive it for
you.
Patricia
From Carol's Notes:
NOTE: Don't type * unless you want to receive ALL the 1997 digests."
Reason the above is wrong is that I discovered, as have a couple others
of you, that you can't ask for
"get volume97/*"
The problem is that you can't ever ask for more than 16 archives at a
time, and we're already in the 70s for the year. If you Really Want to
order All 97 Archives, then you can't order up more than 16 at a time.
The way to do that is to address your email to:
combs-d-request@rootsweb.com, type archive (exactly) in the subject
heading and then in the body of your email, type (for example):
get volume97/69
get volume97/70
get volume97/71
get volume97/72
get volume97/73
and Nothing More!
By which I mean, make sure that you do Not include a 'signature' if you
have one. Signatures are 'automatic inclusions' to your emails.

Carole,
: (1) Do you have the 1880 census record for Nancy COMBS showing where she
: stated her parents were born?
According to my old notes, the 1880 Breathitt Co KY census entry for Nancy
Combs Davidson says she is 70 years of age, born KY, father born KY, mother
born TN.
: (2) Is your Robert DAVIDSON kin to James DAVIDSON who d 1794 Russell Co,
: VA? And if so, how?
It hasn't been completely proven, but most Davidson genealogists that I
have corresponded with believe that James Davidson who d. 1794 was the s/o
Samuel Davidson of VA, s/o John Davidson the immigrant. James Davidson is
generally thought to be the father of Daniel Davidson. Daniel is the
patriarch of the Clay Co KY Davidson clan. The theory is based on tax
records and land deals by James who related that he had a son named Daniel
and sons named James and Robert. And they can be followed through Virginia
and into Ky about 1800-01.
Now it gets Combs-like complicated. Robert Davidson "Sr." who married
Florence (?) is generally believed to have been the third oldest son of
Daniel. However, Daniel's will names his "two youngest sons", White and
Robert as his heirs; so, based on the known birthdates of White and our
Robert "Jr.", it could be that Robert Davidson "Jr." who married Nancy
Combs (d/o Jeremiah "Chunky Jerry" Combs b.1780) may be the son instead of
grandson of Daniel Davidson. Robert "Sr." who married Florence (?) may
indeed be Daniel's brother, instead of son. This goes against a ton of
tradition, but I'm beginning to believe it is true!
Also, check out: http://www.wolfe.net/~marshal/davidson.html for another
reference to James Davidson d.1794. I also show a reference to an article
in KHS, July 1976, page 24.
: (3) Is your Robert DAVIDSON kin to Ben DAVIDSON who married Sallie COMBS,
: dau of Elijah and Polly COMBS Combs, Jr. of Perry KY?
Sorry, I strike out on Ben Davidson. Some my Davidson information is from
a compilation called "Eastern KY Davidsons" by Selden Davidson. I have
corresponded recently with a gentleman in California who is about to
publish an update to this book. I'll write to him and see if he knows of
Ben.
Carol.

Subject: About the WAAAAAAAAAA message that came through theh list. :-{
Hi Cousins,
Well, I did it again. I posted to the group what was meant to be private E
mail.
However since I did post it I would like to explain it. The first part was
about a mixup on some double subs because it looked like I had a list
separate from this one and it went like this:
<<Hi,
I discovered what the problem was I think. They have been to the Mortality
Schedule and they think that I have a list in addition to the one you have so
they send a sub message thinking they are getting on an additional group.>>
******
The second part was for new subscribers who come to us from the Web Site.
Carol wanted them to learn to subscribe by themselves so they would know how
the next time they wanted to subscribe to a mail group. It went like this:
<<I will not sub anyone if you do not want me to but it will not solve this
present problem. I have posted a message to the group that I do not have a
separate list.
So, that should do it. I promise not to sub anyone if you do not want me to.
The instructions are there on the sub page so if they do not understand them
from that then I do not think anything I say will help them. <G>>>
She wanted me to send directions to new people wanting to sub if they made an
inquiry to sub so they could learn how.
I felt this explanation was necessary because the two statements appeared to
be connected and they were two entirely different statements on two entirely
different subjects.
I suppose that is what I get for trying to take care of e mail very late at
night and in the wee hours of the morning. That is one time I should have
hit the reply button and didn't.
My apologies
Patricia

I know this doesnt prove Matilda is a Watts but it looks interesting.
On the 1860 Census she is in Letcher Co. w/o Mason, but her kids are
with her or in surrounding households. Did Mason Die?
Do you have Mason and Matilda on the 1840 / 1830 Census? I was
curious about the concern of "additional children of Matilda's", that
might be from a previous marriage. Can someone shed some light on
this?
I am also curious about earlier Combs / Watts relationships or
migration patterns together. Barbara Matthews posted a few
Overwharton Notes "From the Southside of Potomack Creek" on July 27,
1997 with Francis and Joseph Watts living near the Johnson, Grigsby,
Smith, Kelly Families and others that came EKY way! I am trying to
figure out where this George Watts (mentioned above) migrated from,
and his ancestry. This Francis and Joseph watts are new to me, any
help appreciated.

Will someone please tell me how this can happen? I posted a private message to
fpllnmn1@aol.com and it ends up on the whole network. If it were the first
time one could understand. ALL messages that are posted to Carol should go
to Carol and all other messages should be private (as in PRIVATE). JPD

THE CORRECT URL IS:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/search.html

Sometimes the information is not correct -- it's only as good as the
research of the person who put it there.

Hi Jimmy!
As for the Watts, I don't have a great deal of information, but they
appear to be very long time friends and family of the Stacy families.
When Old Simon Stacy the immigrant lived in Stafford Co., it was from
Thomas Watts Jr. that he leased land for a period of 16 years. Thomas
Watts Jr. died. A battle ensued after two years of leasing the land
(1686-1688), with Sampson Darrel the instigator (plaintiff) in behalf of
his wife, the lease was eventually broken aand Simon was eventually
forced to give up the land. He then removed to York Co., Va where he
and Elizabeth Watts Stacy purchased land, however, Simon maintained some
ties to Stafford Co., VA.
Thomas Stacy, brother of Simon lived near a Hugh Watts on Dragon Swamp
run in Middlesex Co., Va and in North Carolina a very few years later,
wrote his will (1694) which was signed by Katherine Watts.
So the Watts and Stacy families had very strong ties for many years.
I don't know if this helps or not.MR JIMMY B CORNETT wrote:
