Carole,
I've decided rather that attempt to decipher the pension application for
John Combs, I'll send you an attachment for your records, then you will
be able to transcribe it and know it is correct. Hope this is to your
liking????
Also, about Robert Davidson, son of James Davidson Jr. In his Will
probated spring of 1826, James Davidson Jr. makes it clear that his son
is deceased. He also gives to "the children of my son Robert dec'd, he
had by Cynthia Chadwell" and provided for Cynthia as well as he did for
his biological children. Robert never married Cynthia Chadwell but had
several children by her. I have some info for the Davidson family, but
it is as difficult to research as the Combs.
There is a book by Seldon Davidson for the Davidson Family. Interesting
that the connection with James Davidson is basically ignored. Now there
is another descendant attempting to rewrite the book, clearing any
mystery and mistakes between the Scott Co., VA clan and the KY clan. It
is the same problem as with the Josiah Combs book, some documented info,
and speculation in part.....
The Hicks Family. My research into the Russell Co., VA area finds an
older Henry Hicks that could possibly be connected to Robert Hicks. He
also is in the Clay Co., KY area at the same time as Robert Hicks. And
as I pointed out to Pat, a Henry Hix (sic) is in 1840 census of Taney
County, Mo (part of which Douglas Co., MO was formed in 1857, where
Pat's Hicks family resided for some time). This Henry Hix (sic) was age
30-40 years and had nine children in his household. I believe this is
part of Robert Hicks family.
This area is on the edge of the Ozarks and remember that John S. Combs
stated "My grandmother Sumner married a Hicks and went to Indiana and
raised a family. Two of my uncles Hicks LIVED ON THE OZARK MOUNTAINS ON
THE EDGE OF ARKANSAS, WHEN I WAS THERE." This area of Taney Co., MO is
exactly on the Ozark Mountains on the edge of Arkansas, but on the
Missouri edge of Arkansas.
I really do believe we are looking for Nathan Hicks - Henry Hicks SR.
Old Nathan Hicks was in SWVA tax records for sometime before Henry Hicks
the elder shows up, and I believe he may be a son/brother of Old Nathan
Hicks. Lots of research needed to prove it though....

Well in that case I just do not have an answer. I just know that when it
happens to me I look back at the mail I received and the mail I sent and
discover that I have, inadvertently, answered to the address the orignal was
sent from. It is easy to do and easy to forget to do a new mail sometimes
when my mind is distracted on other things. I am sorry, but I just don't
know how it happened if that was not the case.
You asked for it to be explained and I have no other explanation.
I just fail to see how an e mail address can get into a mail window if it
isn't put there because the system would have no way of entering an address
in that window. I hope you get it worked out because I know it is
frustrating. Believe me, I do know.l

As for the posting of George, well, the Osbornes and the Woods are
relatives of James Davidson. Nancy Davidson - daughter of James
Davidson SR. (and thus sister of James Davidson Jr., my fourth great
grandfather) married first Solomon Osborne who was killed by the
indians. She and Solomon had a son, James Osborne. Nancy Davidson
Osborne then married Jonathon Wood and had a Henry Wood, Jonathon Wood,
and others I can't recall off the top my head.

I appreciate the information on the Simeon F. Combs you reference, but he
was born in 1849 in Virginia. My Simeon F. Combs was born about 1802, also
in Virginia. There must be a connection, but I haven't figured that out.
My Simeon would have been about two generations older than the Simeon born
in 1849. I'm not suggesting this, but it is possible he was the father of

Hi, Combs Cousins: I have unsubscribed from the Combs List for now, as
I very rarely saw anything that pertained to my line, originating with
Robert Combs (b. Cir. 1691/1708, m. Mary, d. 9/27/1781), father of Job
Combs (b. 1741, m. Deborah, d. Cir. 1837). Someone did say that
Robert's father was Thomas Combs, and Thomas' father was Richard Combs,
born in England, but when I questioned where that information came from,
I was always referred to someone else, or got no answer from that
person. I do commend you on the work on the lines that have the most
interested participants, and I appreciate knowing that Robert's
ancestors are possibly those mentioned above. I also wanted you all to
know that I have scanned a charcoal of Zur David Combs and his wife,
Sarah Catherine Evans. If any of you are of this line and would like to

A couple years ago, while on a research trip into MO, I was given a book
"Pioneer Families of Clay Co., KY" by Kelly Morgan and Hazel Smith
Morgan of Manchester, KY.
Pages 208-216 have Combs lineage and though there are few dates, I
believe the info may perhaps be of great value. There is info such as
who married whom, and only a few birthdates. There is a picture of
Amerideth Combs, born 1824 and his wife Ester Allen, and etc...
There is mention of Stephen Combs marriage to Barbara Allen, but no
date, however we have the date - this is an example of info, and
lineage.....
I'm going to leave it up to you whether I post marriages from this
book..... There are MANY couples listed along with their children,
including John Jack Combs, John (Black John) Combs and his wife Rachel
Baker who had 11 children listed...... many more.

descendants of Martin and Sarah COMBS Johnson who all lived in Richland
and Prairie Twps.
They sure look like East KY/East TN COMBS/SUMNER/WILLIAMS to me......

You won't believe this, BUT the above John C. SUMNER was born in 1795 in
Vermont!! He's on the 1850 with siblings, family is well researched... It is
apparently(?) pure coincidence that he shows up so close to Jesse D. COMBS...

Hi All,
Sorry to be so slow answering, but have been in the corn and bean patch.
My mom is the d/o Robert H. Combs the youngest child of Granville and Margaret
(Amburgey) Combs. When Robert H married his parents lived with him. My mom grew up with
Old Grandpa (Granville) telling her stories and family history. He talked lots about his
mom (Matilda) and his mom's mom whom he said was his Grannie Watts. Mom said that she
ask him why he never talked about his dad. He said I was small enough when my dad died
that I don't remember much about him. Mason died 1850-1860.
Mom says that her dad (Robert H.)absolutely knew who his grandparents were. He was the
person that submitted the information on Mason and Matilda (Watts) Combs for the JHC
Book.
The two oldest children of Matilda (Millie b. 1823 and Ambrose b. 1825) were
illigitimate. I correspond with a lady that is a descendant of Millie's. She has worked
many years on the Watts. Her information states that Matilda was the d/o George
Washington and Emilia (Noble) Watts. Emilia was the d/o George Jr.and Miss (Saunders)
Noble. I have some more info on this family if any one wants e-mail me direct and I will
send it.
