(1) In ref "Soldier John COMBS, the RW pensioner of Perry Co, KY, in
1825, among the statements made in his RW Pension declaration of 13 May
1825, was the following;
"In 1818 he owned one horse and four cows valued at $75. Since 1818 he
has sold two cows to his son John COMBS for the payment of a debt owed to
Samuel GIVEN and now owns two head of cattle and two yearlings valued at
$20, and about ten head of sheep valued at $8. He is a farmer." (RW
Pension File S35381)
In Fentress Co, TN, John Kays has been looking into the following record
in reference his own John COMBS, presumed father of Green COMBS once of
Fentress, TN:
"COMBS, John: died before 12 Apr 1859 as shown in the suit of W. E. B.
JONES vs. John W. OWEN and others. Complainant dismissed his suit against
all defendants except John W. and J. M. J. OWENS, Jenny GIVIN & Green
COMBS, administrator of John COMBS." (Fentress TN Chancery Court Minutes,
A/194)
Does anyone have any information abt the Samuel GIVENS of Perry Co, KY,
Jenny GIVENS, named above, and/or any of those listed in the above
Fentress TN record?
Also, in reference to OWENS:
(1) JP Downard's notes for Biram COMBS, Jr., b 1815, indicate that Biram
Jr. (son of the Biram COMBS, Sr. who is said to have married the unknown
RIDGE, daughter of William RIDGE, Tory, dec'd 1780, Battle of Hanging
Rock, SC) married a Hannah OWENS on 17 Apr 1836, no location stated (JP's
source: Wilma Raney Wireman, Greenwich, OH).
(2) Mahala COMBS (daughter of Simon and Martha MURRELL Combs), born 1810,
TN (probably Warren Co), married 1829, Warren Co, TN to Barnett OWEN, b
1805, Wilkes Co, NC (Family bible record), both later resided in Madison
Co, AR.

Note to JP: In your notes for Biram COMBS, Jr., you indicate that he was
possibly the father of John COMBS-COUCH. If it is true that Biram COMBS,
Jr. was born in 1815, then he couldn't have been father of John
Couch-Combs if John Couch-Combs was the same individual as John COMBS
who was listed on the 1850 Madison Co, AR census as age 29 (b ca 1821),
born TN, as he would have been only 8 years old at the time. Have you or
anyone else found more information on the John Couch-Combs records to
which JHC refers?

I don't know if you're into book-buying and/or have a good gen library
nearby, but these would definitely be worth checking if you can. If you

also have a listed phone number, and take Visas, but I can't seem to find
it (papers still piled all around me <g>). Also, if you are going to be

COMBS..... however, the following Orange Co, NC records may be of help to
you. And also, I wondered abt your marriage source. Do you have the name
of a bondsman, etc.? That could be of inesteemable help. In the meantime

NOTE: I don't know that the above William and Ann _____ COMBS is the same
William COMBS who was in Orange NC bef 1755, although he may well have
been. However, not only does ne not name a son, Aron, but the above sons,
are obviously too young to be father of yours. I also didn't find an Aron
COMBS on the 1790 Orange Co, NC census, but if he was young, he would
have been in hh of another, his father, employer, etc. There was a John
Justice on the 1790 census of Orange Co, NC, but he was in Orange
District of the county as vs. Hillsboro Dist where we found William
COMBS. This John JUSTICE appears to be the only one in the whole county
(I did not read line by line, however) and one other thing you might want
to do, if you haven't already, is email Ray Justus, xvgf39a@prodigy.com,
who is an Avid JUSTUS/JUSTICE researcher, and who might have info on
both/either John or Elizabeth JUSTICE that could lead you to your COMBS.
Sorry I couldn't be more help, but maybe someone else will see somthing
I've missed. Be sure and say hi for me to Ray. Good luck and hang in,
plus Don't Forget to post your 1850 Census record if they were still
alive then, and otherwise, any other census records you might have. Also,
if you'll post their descendants, including spouses, and locations,

Some of you may recall that one of many areas of confusion in reference
to Mason COMBS of Augusta and/or Frederick Cos, VA, was that JHC* stated
that Mason COMBS was of Frederick VA, and then quoted a 1751 Augusta VA
record -- leaving us confused as to whether Mason COMBS was _ever_ in
Frederick Co, VA at all.
*Josiah H. Combs, author of Combes Genealogy, a work that includes a
number of errors, and which many of us are in the process of attempting
to correct and clarify.
The record in question was:
(Augusta County Court Records, Order Book No. II: 571) 5/28/1751:Road
ordered from Caleb JOB's to James McKAY's, crossing the river at a place
called the Brush Bottom Ford, and so along the river by Henry SPEARS'
plantation, and that said SPEARS, with Mason COMBS, John SALLERS
[Sellers?], Richard SHEITZ, William HURST, William OVERALL, Thomas HUES
[Hughes?], Zachariah McCOY, Torrance CARROLL, Wm. DICKENSON, Steven
PHILIPS, Alexr. GUNNOD (?), James McNEAL, John HAWKINS, Benj. GRIDER,
Ephraim LEATH, Charles WILLIAMSON, Josiah PARENT, Wm. P?RENT, Thomas
PARENT, Edmond BOLLEN, Adam CONINGHAM [CUNNINGHAM], Francis GRUBBS, keep
it in repair. (Chalkey's Chronicles, Vol. 1, p. 44)
The confusion came about because JHC referred to the record as follows on
p. 37:
"…Mason COMBS shoved off from Stafford, in 1750…After the birth of
Wilmot, his last child in Stafford, there is no further reference to him
in the Tidewater country, or Stafford. First mention of Mason in the
records of the Valley is on May 28, 1751, when he and others are ordered
by the County Court of _Frederick_ to keep in repair a road crossing the
Shenandoah at a place called the Brush Bottom Ford. (This date is a
little before the birth of his last child, in Stafford; but he had come
to the Valley the year before, to look the country over, take up land,
and later move his family over).
"Next mention of Mason is three years later, regarding the same road. He
lived in the vicinity of Brush Bottom Ford, on the north side of the
South Fork of the Shenandoah, four miles from Front Royal. It is ten
miles (as the crow flies from Strassburg, and twenty-four from
Winchester. State Highway No. 12 runs close to the vicinity, which is the
first eastward turn of the river below McCoy’s Ford. As nearly as can be
determined, the locality is less than a mile upstream from the Asbury
school, but on the other, or north side of the River. The Norfolk and
Western R. R. runs just opposite, on the south side. It was in this
section that Mason’s son John and his family lived until around 1780."
CH: JHC never stated why he referred to the record as being Frederick as
vs. Augusta, nor how he knew the location of the referenced site. One
problem we have with this record is that Wilmot COMBS was not born until
5 Oct 1751 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co, VA (OPR, King), and JHC's
statement that Mason COMBS left early to 'scout the land' was no more
than supposition with no supportive facts. However, in reference to the
conflict as to whether the land was in Augusta or Frederick, I located
the following source which _may_ be the answer to the conflict:
"Massanutten, Settled by the Pennsylvania Pilgrim, 1726, the First White
Settlement in the Shenandoah Valley," Harry M. Strickler, Reprint, 1978,
The Bookmark, P. O. Box 74, Knightstown, Ind. 46148 [nb: Original date of
printing not given]
CH: This book is primarily abt now-Page County, VA, which was org. from
Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties in 1831; thus it has additional
references to both of those counties, plus their predecessor counties,
including Augusta and Frederick.
(Excerpted from p. 7 & pp. 20-25) "...Massanutten is ... section of Page
County, Virginia, lying between the Massanutten Mountain and the
Shenandoah River, a few miles to the north of the Fairfax Line and
immediately east of a gap in the said mountain known as the New Market
Gap... Massanutten was in Spotsylvania County when the first settlers
located there, later in Orange, then in 1738 that territory of Orange
County west of the Blue Ridge was divided into two counties, Frederick on
the north and Augusta on the south. The records were not actually kept in
Frederick until 1743 and in Augusta until 1745, so these are the true
dates of the establishment of these two counties...The dividing line
between Augusta and Frederick when the counties were first established
was in the neighborhood of Woodstock, Va. [ch: now-Shenandoah]. The true
Fairfax line was run in 1746 and crossed the Shenandoah River several
miles south-west of Massanutten. Massanutten was first in Spotsylvania
County, then in Orange, then in Augusta, then in Frederick, then in
Shenandoah and lastly in Page...In 1753 the line between the Counties of
Augusta and Frederick was made identical with the Fairfax Line. In 1738
when the Counties of Augusta and Frederick were established, the dividing
line was designated as running from the head-waters of the Hedgeman River
to the head-waters of the Potomac. In 1744 an Act was passed, providing
that Augusta should pay her share of the cost of running the line between
the Counties, and the Act recites the fact that Frederick had employed a
surveyor to do the work. It was probably run that year. It has always
been supposed and so accepted by historians that the Fairfax line and the
line between Augusta and Frederick were identical. While this was true
after 1753, before that time the dividing line was evidently further
north but not actually run until 1744... The whole of the Massanutten
patent was in Augusta County, apparently, until 1753, when it became a
part of Frederick County and wholly in the Northern Neck after that line
was definitely established in 1746. The line between the Counties was
probably thirty miles north of the Fairfax line from 1746, the date when
it was established, until 1753. The Hedgeman River flows from the eastern
base of the Blue Ridge about thirty miles north-east of the Conway River
and about ten miles north-east of Thornton's Gap... On this map
Germantown is located on the Hedgeman River, above the mouth of
Thornton's River....The Hedgeman is now [?] the southwest boundary line
of Fauquier County, but modern maps do not carry the name. When Hampshire
County was established in 1753, the Act provided that that part of
Augusta County within the Northern Neck should become a part of Frederick
County and that part of Frederick County lying westward of the Great
North or Cape Capon Mountain should become Hampshire County. This
circumstance proves positively that the Fairfax line was not identical
with the line between Augusta and Frederick Counties prior to 1753
(Hening's Statutes, 1736, p. 514; 1738, pp. 79-80; 1744, p. 275; 1753, p.
376.)..."
CH: Posting the above record does not mean acceptance that Mason COMBS
was located in 1751 in that part of Augusta County that became part of
Frederick County in 1753. We don't even know if the above statements are
accurate. Moreover, I am the pits [sic] when it comes to map-reading.
However, perhaps one of you??????????? <g>
REMINDER: In his pension declaration of 13 May 1825 in Perry Co, KY,
John COMBS, aged 64 on 7 Feb last [1761], declares he enlisted for three
years on 1 Jan 1777 "after the battle of Trenton in New Jersey in
Frederick Co., Va., in the company of Capt. Jonathan Langdon in the 12th
Virginia Regiment of Col. James Wood and served for two years and four
months, when in consequence of sickness he was discharged by Gen. Charles
SCOTT (former Governor of Kentucky who then commanded the corps to which
he belonged.)." His statement, however, was contradicted on 17 Nov 1825,
also in Perry Co, KY, when "Henry COMBS and Nicholas COMBS of said county
declare John COMBS, their brother, enlisted as a private for three years
in Shenandoah County, not Frederick County as stated by their brother, in
Virginia in the latter part of 1776 or first of 1777 in the company of
Capt. Johnathan Langdon. Shortly afterward Capt. Langdon marched to join
the army of Gen. Washington near Brunswick and the company was attached
to the regiment of Col. Wood..." (RW Pension Application File, John

Question: Does anyone on the List have access to any Frederick Co, VA
records? Remember that we still have no idea what record JHC located
whereby he referred to 1762 as being the 'last record of Mason COMBS in
Frederick County.'

a period of over 40 years up to Mason Sr. death on Mitchell River. And
thereafter, the Combs and Ben moved together backup to Russell, to
Lincoln/Green counties KY for another several years. Later, Simon and
Ben Jr. lived in the Floyd/Perry Counties area's with descendant's fo
Mason Jr. and his descendant's. I've actually studied the Stacy
families more than the Combs.
As for Peter Stacy. I have some info on him. There were two Peter's,
one the son of John Sr. of Stafford Co., who married Ruth Croswell, and
the other Peter, the son of (I believe, from Tax records) John Jr. of
Russell Co., VA. This younger Peter was in Hawkins, got in a great
deal of trouble there and retreated to the Clay County, KY area where he
was killed by his son-in-law sometime in 1817-1818. He was involved in
the cattle wars of KY.

By the way, the "other" Peter, the older Peter who married Ruth lived in
Jefferson KY and Clark Co., IN. I have info for him also...

(1) Our information previously was that Benjamin STACEY, born 7 Apr 1744,

COMBS, b 6 Feb 1761, d 1848, who was supposedly the son of John and Nancy
HARDING? Combs, the latter supposedly an older son of Mason and Sarah
_____ COMBS of Stafford Co, VA. As you may know the COMBS Genealogy to
date has been rather confusing and for at least half of us on this list,
'straightening it out' is our Primary Goal. I had always wondered abt a
man born in 1744 waiting until 1798 to marry (our info re the Benjamin
STACEY/Barbara Ann COMBS marriage), so are we looking at two marriages --
one to Ann and the second to Barbara -- or two different couples?
(Actually, it would help us all greatly if you could post a desc. chart
beginning with John I of Stafford Co, VA). I am also, of course, eager to
learn of your basis for stating that Benjamin, b 1744, married Ann, the
daughter of Mason and Sarah _____ COMBS of Stafford.
(2) You state that Mason COMBS of Russell VA & Perry Co, KY, was the son
of Mason COMBS, Sr. of Surry Co, NC whereas other researchers have listed
him as the son of John and Nancy HARDING? Combs, the latter supposedly
being the son of Mason COMBS, Sr. of Stafford Co, VA. Some researchers
believe that Mason COMBS, Jr., born 21 Feb 1746/7 in Overwharton Parish
of Stafford Co, VA is the same who was of Hawkins Co, TN and married to
Dorothy ____, but no one seems to have documented either so again, I/we
are all Very Interested in your sources/analyses, etc.
(3) You also mention having found a document in Frederick Co., Va where
"Simon Sr. borrowed money from one John Counts, and Mason was witness for
Simon Sr." We have been seeking documentation of Mason COMBS having been
in Frederick County -- and in fact, another email going out with this one
further discusses that fact (I'll copy you on it, too).
(4) George Baumbach has done an incredible amount of research into the
Cody, Combs and Stacey families in reference to Surry & Rowan Counties,
NC, Russell Co, VA, and eastern KY, and of course, in my own case, I'm
trying to determine the identity of the Mason and Dorothy _____ COMBS of
Hawkins Co, TN -- and his relationship to my own Sarah COMBS, b 1779, NC,
d 1829, Warren Co, TN; married Martin JOHNSON, b ca 1776-1780, d 1851,
Madison Co, AR; two of whose children, Pleasant Miller and Matilda

On which note, I will close for now except to state that one thought that
has crossed All of our minds, but particularly those of Daryl COMBS and
myself is that Mason COMBS of Hawkins Co, TN, may have signed the above
Land Trust due to a need to 'get out of Dodge' so to speak. Interestingly
enough, my own Martin JOHNSON signed a 'strange' deed himself abt the
same time, or a little earlier, in which he deeded over All of his
property and holdings to his son, William, who was only abt 1 years of
age at the time (born ca 1800), with no mention of guardianship,
executors, wife, etc. He later 'resold' the land to Jacob LAWSON, a close
neighbor, but we have yet to find an 'in-between' deed, whereby Martin
JOHNSON regained use of this land. I can post add'l on these 'Hawkins TN
oddities' if you're interested, and I have also begun, with more to come
shortly, posting his data to a web page

FIRST GENERATION
1. John SR COMBS was born about 1735 in , Westmoreland, VA. He died in
1820 in Vicco, Perry, KY.
He was buried in Godsey Farm, , KY. !John was a Rev. War Vet. He is
buried in back of the Pic-Pac Store on old SR15
at Vicco, KY, on the old Godsey Farm. There is a Rev. marker by the grave.
Wife may have been named Stacy instead of Harding. The following in
Annuals of Floyd Co., KY.--Elijah Combs was appointed the administrator of the
estate of John Combs, Dec. and ordered that John Adams, Thomas Johnson, John
Kelly and John Cornett to appraise the estate. John is also known as the father
of the "8" brothers who were the progentators for most of the Combs clan in the
mountain area. John served in the French and Indian War in the autumn of 1755
along with his brother Josiah. It seems he also fought in the Rev. with several
of his sons. Records show that John Combs served in Capt. Casey' Co. John's son
also served in the same regiment from 1777 to 1779 at the age of 15. After the
war he returned to Surry Co., NC and sold his land and grist mill to his father
Mason in 1784. John and his family met with his brother "Danger Nick" and
traveled to KY. He was an old man when he came. I have pictures of the grave
which is not visible from the highway. JPD
He was married to Nancy HARDING about 1750. Nancy HARDING was born about
1740 in , Shenadoah,
VA. She died about 1819 in Vicco, Perry, KY. She was buried in Godsey

resident of Bath Co., KY aged 63 and wife 61. No children living. Died
3/8/1840. First settled on White Oak Branch of Carr Creek, just below Vicco.

Mason Combs that was surety was probably his grandfather.
Came to KY in 1795 from Russell Co., VA and founded his home in what was called
"Big Bottom", which is about a half mile above where the town of Hazard now
stands. This was the first settlement on the North Fork. Harrison was engaged
in transporting goods up and down the river. It is said that Harrison made more
than six trips on a flatboat to New Orleans, sold the boat, and walked back.

of VA. Elijah is credited with founding the city of Hazard, KY, in Perry Co. and
donated 10 acres of property that the city is on. I have deed for Hazard, KY.
In the Annanls of Floyd Co. Elijah Combs was appointed the aadministrator of
the estate of John Combs, dec. and ordered that John Adams, Thomas Johnson,
John Kelly and Hohn Cornett to appraise the estate.
"Lige", as he was known, was head of the Militia and often appeared in full
regimental dress to drill them. (See Dickey Diary). He was jailer in 1832.
Elijah is listed in KY Militia as Major, 2d Bat. 80th Reg. in 1/17/1811.
He was magistrate in 1833, sheriff in 1836 and served in the State Senate in
1840. Elijah and Sarah are buried behind the courthouse in unmarked graves.
Still, today, there is no statue erected in the town to acknowlege his deeds.
Lige was also Adjutant General of the State of KY. Also a member of Masonic
Lodge No 1 of Lexington, KY.

101. Mary Polly COMBS was born in Mar 1840 in Hazard, Perry, KY. She died
on 11 Dec 1911 in Hazard,
Perry, KY. She was buried in Hazard Cemetery, Perry, KY. !I have picture
of Eli and Polly in my files.
Also have 4 deeds with her name
on them. Have been to her grave in Hazard Cemetery alongside Eli just inside
the gate. She lived at #7 in 1850 District 1 Census in Perry Co., KY and Eli
nearby in Hazard Town. Have pictures of graves of Eli and Polly.
Polly is buried just inside Hazard Cemetery, alongside of Elias. Daughter
Margaret had child out of wedlock named Cassius.
Eli and Polly raised Cassius. He is shown
living with them in 1910 Perry Census. Also shown with Eli as his guardian in
school census. It is also possible that Polly died in 1910 and was not buried
until a year later. This was sometimes the custom to have the funeral a year
later.
She was married to Elias COUCH on 13 Sep 1859 in Hazard, Perry, KY. Elias
COUCH was born on 7 Jan
1840 in Hazard, Perry, KY. He died on 13 Jun 1924 in Hazard, Perry, KY. He
was buried in Hazard,
Cemetery. He has reference number 14. !Elias was a Civil War Vet in the
Union Army. He was in the
Three Forks
Batallion. Eli was in Company #1, 14th Cavalry. I have record.
He was also in the 19th Regiment Infantry of KY. He became ill in VA and Matt
Horn told me my great-grandmother, Polly Combs Couch, took 2 pack mules over
the mountains, found him, and nursed him back to health in Hazard, KY. In 1920
Elias is enumerated with Matt Horn (High St.) Relationship grandfather. Also
enumerated is a Eli Couch 79 Perry V78 s24 l29 with Nancy 59.
Eli has land grant of 200 acres in Book 71, Page 259, dated 8/23/1865 on Big
Creek in Perry Co., KY. Marriage in Book B Perry Co., KY. #B117.
Elias' "nickname" was "Gaitors", which referred to him reportedly "dancing out
of his shoes". I would have loved to have known him. I was about a year old
when he died. I'm sure my mother made sure he knew me!
An article in the Perry Newspaper in 1911 reported that Eli had been bitten by
a "huge rattlesnake, which he immediately killed. A Dr. Denham stayed overnite
with him and he survived." I have picture of Elias and Polly Couch in my files.

Mustered into service, 8/17/1864 at Booneville, KY. Owed Federal Gov't $63.50
for used clothing allotment. Owed $5.15 for last haversack, belt, belt plate
and cap pouch.
Where born: Perry Co., KY. Black eyes, Black hair, dark complexion.
5-foot, 6-inches tall.
Eli and Polly were charter members of the First Missionary Baptist Church
organized on 8/27/1898. Rev. A.B. Petrey was Pastor. (DAR Book). Children
