I looked in the 1830-1840 census of York County, for listings for Combs,
and found only a few, all were listed as people of color.
Going back to the Charles Parish records, I found that there were LISTED
AS MULATTOS:
ABRAHAM COMBS B. MAR 8, 1782 (listing births, not baptisms, nor parents)
Elizabeth Combs b. Aug 15, 1781
George Pickett Combs b. Dec 5, 1786
Hebe Combs b. Mar 2, 1786
Jane Combs b. May 2, 1784
ALL THE OTHERS LISTED IN THE PARISH REGISTER, WERE NOT LISTED AS PEOPLE
OF COLOR. IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS, THE ORIGINAL RECORDS SHOULD BE
CHECKED.

Hi George,
Stayed up late last night reading (too late) a book entitled "Trail of
Tears" The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation by John Ehle. Have you
read this? You probably have, but just in case I'm going to give you
some info of interest to us all, and we should check some of the
reference material cited in the bibliography.
Ridge, the indian born 1771 to a half Highland Scot/half indian woman
(said to be promiscuous in the book). His mother's name is not given,
nor the biological father. Nor the grandfather, said to be a Scot. (See
page 10) Ridge was of the Deer Clan...
Later Ridge the indian married Susannah Wickett and had children, named
were Nancy and John Ridge JR.
HE ran with the likes of John Watt and Doublehead, Benge. (see p. 46)
CORNET Evans was fired upon by the indians in Sumner County, TN between
Bledsoe's Lick and Colonel Winchester's, Evan Watkins was killed 24th
October 9, (no year given but estimated at 1785-1790) page 47. Elijah
Walker was killed 12 miles south of Nashville, Also on that day, on the
frontiers of Hawkins Co., TN, a white man was killed and four men
wounded by indians, page 48.
James Vann and Charles Hicks, both "half-breeds" lived near Ridge near
the town of Pine Logs, as did Stand Watie, Ridges brother. page 69.
Page 208: "Other missionaries were threatened seriously. One claimed
his life had been threatened when he was accosted by TWO SONS OF INDIAN
THOMAS PETTIT."
On page 256: "John (Ridge), with two other cherokees then in Washington,
John Martin and William Shorey Coody, sought out John McLean, a Supreme
Court Justice......."
The names Ridge, and Pettit as well as Coody made for interest, in my
opinion. I don't mean to get off the subject, but the Combs were
involved with all these names....?????? Hope there are other's who find
this interesting.
That is as far as I've gotten. In any event, this is a very interesting
book, and thought I should pass some info on, should someone be looking
for any of this info in conjunction with their research...

I was looking at the Warren Co., TN GenWeb site and found the 1812 tax
list which names Jeremiah Combs, Simon Combs, SOLOMON SCAGGS, Hardy
Spicer and John Grigsby, all names I recognize. The Zachariah Scaggs
family was with Mason Combs in Pittsylvania County, tax list 1764/1768?
(not looking at my source material) or thereabouts, and later, the
Scaggs, Combs and Stacy's intermarried. Old Henry Scaggs of Russell
Co., VA had a daughter that married a Combs, and one that married John
Stacy, I have those records if you do not, and will send them, but do
not want to repeat info already known...
Solomon Scaggs was related to Henry Scaggs.
This info just goes round and round, doesn't it?
I now see a little more clearly why the Cody's and Price's migrated to
Warren Co., TN. Later a branch of Stacy's, related but not so closely
migrated to Warren/Coffee Counties, TN. I've written about them.
I also looked at the Warren Co., TN Primitive Baptist Church Records
1828, and noted your Sally Combs Johnson migrated to Madison Co., AR?
Some Stacy famiies of Jackson Co., KY (Perhaps from the Ben and Anne
Combs Stacy line) were there also. They had migrated to MO and then
into AR, moved around a great deal... This was William and Rebecca
Griffy/Griffith Stacy line. Her father was Jonas Griffey/Griffith of
Jackson Co., TN...
There is much debate among descendants as to this William and Rebecca
Stacy. Some believe William was Zachariah Stacy, or William Zachariah
Stacy, son of William Stacy of Hawkins Co., TN who after trouble with
the law,(counterfeiting) left the area in a hurry and went to Jackson
Co., TN where he had relatives, Uncle Ben and family. He had left
behind a wife and two children. He then married Rebecca Griffy and had
a large family in IL (briefly) back to TN and then on the trail of tears
as Rebecca was an indian, then left trail at Springfield, MO.
The above could be true, but I've not been able to prove it...
I'm at a disadvantage, as I don't know what other's have sent to you
ie., Combs info. I have Henry Scaggs will naming daughter Combs and
daughter (Lucy) Stacy. Do you need?
I also have census of John and Lucy Stacy in Hardin County, KY, do you
need?

In the last e-mail, I didn't mention that Samuel Coombes/Combs married
Mary "Polly" Skaggs, daughter of Henry Skaggs (see his will).
Therefore, Samuel Combes, John Stacy, and James Skeigs/Skaggs/Scaggs
were all brothers-in-law. Jacob Gum was also related in some manner,
for his sister married a Skaggs, also. That one must be researched...

I am responding to the message from Darlene Homme, seeking info on
"COMBS" in Oklahoma. I have no facts, except firm family memory and much
talk, about a brother of George Obed Combs, Uncle Ed - reputed to have
become a Holiness preacher in/around Enid, Ok. Supposedly about 14 children
- sexes unknown.
There is a fair possibility that Ed was older than George - who was born
15 July 1889, Palo Pinto County, TX - - just west of the Dallas/Fort Worth
area.
The family discussions report Ed and George's parents as Thomas Jefferson
Combs and Charlotte COOK Combs. No dates or sites available to me at this
time.
Ms Homme - we may be able to assist each other - - can any of you other
folks get this far south/west to join us?
