<BR>records, but for having invited you to join us 'too soon.' I did not
<BR>realize until I began organizing the earlier of the 17th century VA Combs
<BR>records either how much data I had collected, nor how much I was missing.
<BR>Hopefully, this series of emails will serve to rectify my earlier
<BR>omissions. Also Note that some of the formatting herein may cause some
<BR>records to be difficult to read. Copying and pasting same into a word
<BR>processing file 'should' correct the problem, if it occurs.

<BR>Selected 17th Century COMBS of VA Records
<BR>Note: Stafford County, Virginia was organized from Westmoreland County in
<BR>1664, but no COMBS records have been located thus far in pre-1664
<BR>Westmoreland County. Old Rappahannock County, VA, was organized from
<BR>Lancaster County in 1656, but no COMBS records have been located thus far
<BR>in Lancaster County, Virginia prior to the organization of Old
<BR>Rappahannock County. Old Rappahannock was divided into Essex and Richmond
<BR>Counties in 1692, and in 1728, Caroline County was organized from Essex,
<BR>King and Queen and King William Counties. Peumansend Run or Creek (var.
<BR>sp.) is in now-Caroline County. Also note that except in actual records
<BR>-- where the original spelling has been retained, the surname is usually
<BR>spelled COMBS herein. Also note that this document is incomplete. Several
<BR>references have not yet been entered; and several deeds are still
<BR>missing.

<BR>(2) sold said property to Francis TRIPLETT (p. 55&amp;56); who then (3) sold

<BR>Creek – where Archdale and Elizabeth BUTLER (Underwood) COMBS and their
<BR>sons, William and John COMBS, held an interest in land -- and where John
<BR>MEADOR, husband of Joanne COMBS, sister of Abraham COMBS, owned adjacent
<BR>property (See also Archdale and Elizabeth BUTLER (Underwood) Combs at
<BR>http://members.aol.com/combsva/combsbut.html).
<BR>The relationship, if any, of Abraham &amp; Joanne COOMBES (siblings) of Old
<BR>Rappahannock Co, Virginia, and Maryland to Archdale COMBES [var. sp.] of
<BR>same, has not been determined. Other than one record on which both their
<BR>names appear (Old Rap Co., Va DB Part I of 1668-1670:28-29), although a
<BR>year apart, covering the period Dec 1666 to Dec 1667, no relationship or
<BR>direct dealings between Archdale and Abraham have been located thus far.
<BR>However, in addition to the land on Peumans End Run, all were acquainted
<BR>with the same families, and Joanne COMBS Meador and Archdale COMBS
<BR>possibly even resided on adjacent land at one time. Based on research to
<BR>date, and the records unearthed thus far, it appears likely, although
<BR>undocumented, that Abraham COMBS of Old Rappahannock Co, Virginia and
<BR>Maryland was the same individual as Abraham of St. Mary’s County,
<BR>Maryland. Minimal research reveals the following:
<BR>John MEADOR, born ca 1632-1633 (Old Rappa DB1:418, Meador), was the elder
<BR>son of Ambrose MEADOR of Isle of Wight and Lancaster Cos, Virginia. On 3
<BR>Sep 1656, Ambrose MEADOR of Isle of Wight purchased from James WILLIAMSON
<BR>the lower 1000 acres of a grant on Willing [Totuskey] Creek (Lancaster
<BR>DB2:36, Meador). [CH: James WILLIAMSON was the husband of Ann UNDERWOOD,
<BR>sister of William UNDERWOOD whose widow, Elizabeth BUTLER, married
<BR>second, Archdale COMBS. Of this 1000 acres, 400 acres was later inherited
<BR>by Ambrose MEADOR’S son, John, who traded it to Robert TOMLIN on 3 May
<BR>1663 for 500 acres on Peumansend Creek (Old Rappa DB2:37, Meador). 
<BR>John MEADOR married twice, the first time to Joanne (or Jane) COOMBES,
<BR>sister of Abraham COOMBES. (Old Rappa DB4:283, Meador) 
<BR>
<BR>Abraham COOMBES was the godfather and uncle of John MEADOR, Jr. and
<BR>Robert PAYNE, the godfather of Mary MEADOR, daughter of John and Joanne
<BR>COOMBES Meador, Sr. (Meador) In 1671, John MEADOR witnessed the will of
<BR>Robert PAYNE who named Mary MEADOR as his goddaughter, and to whom he
<BR>bequeathed a foal mare. (Old Rappa WB1:418, Meador)
<BR>Joanne COOMBES Meador apparently died between 1665 and 1672 as by 1672,
<BR>John MEADOR had married a second time to Susannah _____. The marriage was
<BR>her third, she having married twice before, once to a BROOKS, then to Job
<BR>VIRGETT. She had one son by each of these husbands and one child by John
<BR>MEADOR, Sr., Thomas MEADOR, born ca 1673 (Essex D&amp;WB9:236, Meador).
<BR>On 16 Oct 1683, Abraham COOMBES recorded a second deed in which he named
<BR>John MEADOR, Sr. as his brother-in-law, John MEADOR, Jr., as &quot;deceased in
<BR>his minority,&quot; and decreed that his 1668 bequest to John MEADOR, Jr. (now
<BR>two cows and two calves) should instead go to Mary MEADOR, &quot;sole sister
<BR>of John MEADOR, Jr.&quot; (Old Rappa DB7:155, Meador) Nothing further is known
<BR>of Mary MEADOR after 1683. (Meador)
<BR>In addition to the above-mentioned 500 acres on Peumansend Creek, on
<BR>April 17, 1667, John MEDERS. and Henry PETERS were granted 4,200 acres in
<BR>Old Rappahannock Co (Patent Book 6, p. 28) on S. side &amp; abt 3 mi from the
<BR>Riv. Upon Pwomansend (Powmansend) Cr., Beg. nere the run next to land of
<BR>Mr. Silvester THATCHER, &amp;c. over a br. to Quarter br. &amp;c. Trans. Of 84
<BR>pers, including (ch: partial listing of possibly familiar names) Samll.

<BR>On 22 April 1670 John MEADORS was granted 625 acres for the
<BR>transportation of 13 people to the colony, which grant was sold to Symon
<BR>MILLER (Old Rappa DB4:266, Meador)
<BR>John MEADOR, Sr., apparently died about 1683 (Old Rappa DB7:155, Meador),
<BR>leaving a will which has not survived. (Old Rappa DB7:136, Meador) In
<BR>this will, besides bequests to his son Thomas of his remaining lands,
<BR>John MEADOR bequeathed an unspecified amount of land to Mary DENBY, wife
<BR>of John WALKER. The relationship between John MEADOR and Mary DENBY has
<BR>not been determined, nor the dowry he may have left to his widow,
<BR>Susannah. (Meador)
<BR>Thomas MEADOR, son of John and Susannah _____ MEADOR, Sr., later sold the
<BR>original 500 acres on Peumans End Run to Job VIRGETT and Josiah SHIPP
<BR>(Essex Court Orders, 1692-1695, p. 356; Meador), relatives of his mother,
<BR>Susannah who married next, William DAVIS, by whom she also had one child,
<BR>and whom she outlived as well. Susannah’s will, signed in 1699 and proved
<BR>in 1700, named Thomas MEADOR, executor. (Essex D&amp;WB10:65, Meador) Her
<BR>oldest child, Elizabeth BROOKS married Richard SHIPP; and her eldest son,
<BR>Job VIRGETT, Jr. (d 1712) married Elizabeth BOUDREY. (Meador) 
<BR>It is not known if John MEADOR, Sr. ever resided on the Peumansend Creek
<BR>land. On various deeds over the years, he is named as of Sittenbourne
<BR>Parish and of Old Rappahannock County, but since both encompassed large
<BR>areas on both sides of the river, it has been impossible to determine his
<BR>actual residences at any given time. (Meador) However, after the creation
<BR>of St. Mary’s Parish abt 1689, his son, Thomas MEADOR listed himself as
<BR>of that parish, which with other indications confirm that Thomas did live
<BR>on the grant lands on Peumans End. (Meador)
<BR>Thomas MEADOR was of legal age by 1695 (Meador), and in 1698, he married
<BR>(Essex DB9:236, Meador), becoming the second husband of Susannah
<BR>REYNOLDS, widow of Thomas GOSS and mother of John and Sarah GOSS.
<BR>(Meador) Susannah REYNOLDS Goss Meador apparently died between 1705 and
<BR>1717, when Thomas wrote his will, dated 29 Jan 1717, proved 31 Jan 1717,
<BR>in which he named wife, Ann, and brother-in-law, John SALLIS. (Essex
<BR>WB3:1, Meador). By Susannah REYNOLDS, was one son, John MEADOR, born
<BR>between 1700 and 1706, who died before reaching his majority. Thomas
<BR>MEADOR’S widow Ann married next, Thomas AYERS (Meador) CH: The above
<BR>Sarah GOSS later married Frederick COGHILL, possibly son of James
<BR>COGHILL, but not researched.

<BR>Additional NOTES: As can be seen, the above report and it's predecessor
<BR>are both incomplete -- Also, I believe there may be several errors in
<BR>Meadors [aka Meadows] in re the various John MEADORS; however, I do not
<BR>have copies of any pages other than those of the line of John who married
<BR>Joanne [aka Jane] COMBS and even those do not detail sufficiently the
<BR>times, locations and relationships. For the time being though, I think
<BR>any further interest in Meador will/should probably be auxiliary to our
<BR>COMBS research -- except for perhaps an interest in the above reference
<BR>to Mary DENBY who m John WALKER. Note also that it will be necessary to
<BR>refer to the above-noted website for add'l data in re Archdale and
<BR>Elizabeth BUTLER Combs. Even that site, unfortunately,  is out-of-date
<BR>due to the ongoing nature of our research. Nevertheless, it appears
<BR>probable that a relationship did exist between Abraham, Joanne and
<BR>Archdale COMBS and -- even though we have located only one early VA

<BR>Lancaster Co, VA in 1660 -- and that Enoch COMBS of VA was first recorded
<BR>in MD in 1664 (based on the above); and likewise that the surname COADE

<BR>In reviewing the will of Abraham COMBE of St. Mary's Co, MD, I also noted
<BR>two possible add'l 'connections:'

<BR>looking into the ancestry/kinship of the Henry PAYNE who witnessed the
<BR>will of Abraham COMBS. A cursory search of my own records has revealed
<BR>nothing add'l on Robert PAYNE, but perhaps Rob Richardson (if he gets
<BR>this far down through this email &lt;g&gt;) who is both a COMBS and a VA PAYNE
<BR>researcher and/or Velpo PAYNE who is also a VA PAYNE researcher might
<BR>know more of him. Also, note that our only record for Enoch COMBS -- in
<BR>1660 in Lancaster Co, VA, was in reference to an Adry [Audrey?] HILL, and
<BR>we have Clement HILL witnessing the will of Abraham COMBS of St. Mary's

<BR>In reference to the will of the later Enoch COMBS, 1756, St. Mary's, I
<BR>noted the mention of Basil BROOK:

<BR>One Robert BROOK, justice of Essex Co, from 1692-1706 (The land on Pumens
<BR>End Run was in Essex during that period) married Catherine BOOTH,
<BR>daughter of Humphrey and Margaret UNDERWOOD Booth -- Margaret UNDERWOOD
<BR>having been the sister of William who m Elizabeth BUTLER whose second
<BR>husband was Archdale COMBS. His ancestry unknown, but also in VA -- by
<BR>1635 was one Basil BROOK, relationships never determined, but both in the
<BR>Old Rappa/Essex Co, VA areas at the same time. (Fothergill )

<BR>On a different tack: VA COMBS researchers who are descended from 'Old
<BR>Joseph' of Stafford have long sought in vain to locate records for him
<BR>prior to 1723, and/or records that would offer clues to his ancestry. In
<BR>his book, JHC suggested that Joseph COMBS of Stafford VA was an elder,
<BR>unnamed son of John COMBS of Richmond (Will 1716). That seems highly
<BR>unlikely given that Joseph was never recorded in Old Rappa or any of its
<BR>descendant counties; and that Archdale COMBS II, named son of John COMBS
<BR>of Richmond (son of Archdale I) seems to have inherited by primogeniture
<BR>all of John COMBS' property -- as John COMBS of Richmond seems to have
<BR>inherited by same all property of Archdale COMBS I (Land search still in
<BR>progress). 
<BR>
<BR>I would suggest that strong consideration be given to two possibilities:
<BR>(1)  that Joseph COMBS was born in MD, and issue of Enoch or one of
<BR>Enoch's descendants; or (2) that he was not the son, but the half-nephew,
<BR>of John COMBS of Richmond, a grandson of Archdale COMBS I, by an earlier
<BR>marriage. It should be remembered that eldest sons did not need to be
<BR>named in Colonial wills. They AUTOMATICALLY inherited. And so long as the
<BR>land did not change hands during their life time, neither did _their_
<BR>sons need to record property inherited. If Archdale COMBS I left a son by
<BR>an earlier wife in Stafford Co, VA, and Joseph was a son of that son, NO
<BR>COURT RECORDS would be necessary for Joseph to inherit the land -- and we
<BR>have and/or are in the process of building, a very strong case for
<BR>Archdale COMBS of Stafford having been highly likely (90th percentile?)
<BR>to have been the same individual as Archdale of Old Rappahannock Co, VA. 
<BR>
<BR>On yet another tack, although still in reference to Old Joseph of
<BR>Stafford, but also in ref MD, the following record:

<BR>Note: The above deed not only shows close COMBS/CLARK connection, but
<BR>also shows that the sd. property, recorded in Prince William, wast adj.
<BR>to Jeffery JOHNSTON, whose land later fell into Fauquier, and whose son,
<BR>Jeffrey and wife Rachel WALKER (dau of George of Westmoreland, Fairfax
<BR>and Loudon), later removed to Surry/Wilkes Co, NC where their property
<BR>abutted that of Edmund DENNEY whose daughter, Ann, married George COMBS
<BR>(earlier postings, plus I'll be reposting when I finish the Surry/Wilkes
<BR>COMBS report -- far lengthier than this one). Note also the mention of
<BR>James PETERS. Was he kin to Henry PETERS who with John (and Joanne COMBS)
<BR>MEADOR of Old Rappa/Essex/Caroline owned land on Pumens End Run? Also, an
<BR>earlier John CATLETT was husband of Elizabeth UNDERWOOD who later married

<BR>I went through four boxes of letters and cards that my grandmother left when
<BR>she died in 1976. She apparently saved every card and letter that she ever
<BR>recieved- at least from 1925 on. She also taught piano lessons in Hazard for
<BR>many years- I think from 1927-1973. Ther are lots of young Combs, Cornetts,
<BR>Hollidays, Napier , Campbell and many other familiar Kentucky names on
<BR>programs from the 1920s up. I found a few notes that she and my great aunt
<BR>hala made, Apparantly they were outraged that their branch of the family
<BR>wasn't represented at some reunion. There is also a letter from Stella Combs
<BR>Mattingly describing Josiah H. Combs research in Perry Co.. He was her first
<BR>cousin and she and my grandmother were friends, There are some engagement
<BR>announcements, and three puzzling pieces that I haven't connected yet.

<BR>I am seeking information on the family of Joseph COMBS who was born ca. 
<BR>1708, supposedly in Stafford Co., VA, and died ca. 1788 in Smithfield, PA.
<BR>According to material that was sent to me a few years ago, this Joseph was 
<BR>married to a Sarah Matilida &quot;Unknown&quot; and the father of the following

<BR>out this Joseph COMBS and whether or not he is the same man who married
