When was he born? Where? Was he a full blooded native American? If so, what tribe? If not, how did he have Indian ancestry? On another line, unrelated so far as I know to the Combs family, I descend from Abel Sparks and Elizabeth BENGE who married in Surry/Rowan Co., NC (marriage is proven by bond; I forget location; date c. 1787; Sparks originally from MD to Rowan Co., NC, and thereafter in Surry Co., NC). Elizabeth BENGE was reputed daughter of Thomas BENGE and Susannah LEWIS from Albemarle Co., VA. Thomas reputedly had brother John BENGE who married a sister of Susannah LEWIS. Nothing more is known of origins of Thomas and John BENGE. As per the IGI/Ancestral File, there is a Lewis genealogy showing descent from John Lewis to William Terrell Lewis to David Lewis to another John Lewis, all of New Kent/Hanover Cos., VA. Through Lewis line there is supposedly Terrell/Tyrell and Martin ancestry, the former (Terrell) tying into the Waters family of Accomack/Northampton Co., VA. That is entirely from the IGI/Ancestral File and, as I am 5000 miles away from American records, I don't yet have sources to try to confirm it, although I have been able to confirm some bits and pieces and to question others (namely the Waters descent of the Lewis family). BENGE seems to have been a very uncommon name. The conjunction of references to Chief BENGE in VA and then Combs in Surry Co., NC, makes me seriously wonder whether Thomas and John BENGE were near relatives of Chief Benge. Any further information would be most gratefully welcomed! Sincerely, Danny Knight. ------------------------------ ========================================================================= From Aptgen@aol.com Wed Jun 4 07:36:13 1997 (8.7.6/8.7.3) with SMTP id HAA29949 Wed, 4 Jun 1997 07:36:13 -0700 From: x-x-x-x-x-xAptgen@aol.com"> Aptgen@aol.com Received: from emout10.mail.aol.com (emout10.mx.aol.com [198.81.11.25]) (8.6.12/8.6.9) with ESMTP id HAA32018 Wed, 4 Jun 1997 07:38:04 -0700 Received: (from root@localhost) by emout10.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id KAA09881 for COMBS-L@rootsweb.com; Wed, 4 Jun 1997 10:37:54 -0400 (EDT) Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 10:37:54 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: 970604103725_123544249@emout10.mail.aol.com To: COMBS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: COMBS Notes You are most welcome kiddo. I have a partial listing of the Russell Co., VA tax lists and unfortunately I don't have the 1787 list which I really need.... I checked those I do have and found: RUSSELL CO., VA In 1788 in William Weir's Personal Property tax list - Upper District No Combs STACY: John Sr. (1) John Jr. (1) Peter (1) Simon (1) Ditto 1789: CODY: William (1) COMBS: Mason (1) William (1) William (1) STACY: Benjamin0(1) William (1) Jesse (1) John (1) Peter (1) John Jr. (1) Meshack (1) Simon (1) Ditto: 1790 (John Weir's List) Coady: William (1) COMBS: John (1) Meshek (1) William (1), (1) William Jr. (1) PETIT: Judith (0) STACY: Benjamin (1) Jesse (1) Meshack (1) Peter (1) Simeon (1) SCAGGS: HENRY (1) Jeremiah (1) John (1) Moses (1) Solomon (1) Zachariah(1) I add the Scaggs because I believe they could be another KEY to the Combs family. They came out of Maryland. They are with Mason Combs in Pittsylvania Co., VA tax list (see previous posting) and John Stacy married Lucy Scaggs (ca 1787 per Richard Whitts undated list), daughter of Henry Scaggs. Note that John is not listed in this tax list, and I believe HE is the one that first went to the Green River settlements in KY where eventually Henry Scaggs and Benjamin Stacy migrated, probably soon after this tax list. Henry died there in Green Co., KY. I posted his will to the group a few weeks ago, listing his daughter Lucy Stacy, as well as other children named. The State of Franklin papers, or the Wautaga petition in Washington Co., Tn mentioned by Carole in the last posting, signed in 1787 has the signatures of 2 William Combs, and I'm wondering if the 2 William Combs of the above list (1789) are not one and the same as those of Watauga petition? One of the William's of the list above has two polls, himself and one age 16-21? or over 21? Also, we have record of Mason in land records in Hawkins Co., TN, so we are aware he was there with William Stacy and Peter Stacy (this is the same Peter Stacy of the above personal property tax list). Peter migrated to Clay Co., KY where he was killed by a son-in-law in 1817 or so. Meshack Stacy is also shown in Hawkins Co., TN land records. A John Combs and William Combs are in Green and Lincoln Counties, Ky where each had a daughter marry, one to Benjamin Stacy Jr. and one to James Henley (both these men moved over into Floyd/Clay Counties Kentucky with their Combs in-law).... When Mason Stacy, son of Benjamin and Anne Combs married Charlotte Carter, he is listed as Meshack Stacy. I learned from descendants of this couple that his name was MASON and not Meshack. I also found this couple in Hickman Co., KY (1830 & 1840 census) and later they removed to Coahoma Co., MS where nearly all their children as well as themselves are listed in the 1850 census. Mason and Charlotte are the names used in this 1850 census. The point of this is - is the Meshack Combs listed above in the tax record; is this a Meshack Combs or is this Mason Combs. Does anyone know???? Henry Combs who married Rachel Clements 21 Sep 1788 - FATHER OF WINNEFRED COMBS? Since Winnefred Combs had a daughter born in 1785 in VA (per 1850 census of Wright Co., MO - Elizabeth Sumner Cody) this Henry is either not the father of Winnefred or this is a second marriage, and I don't know which. I do not have the tax lists for Montgomery Co., VA, hopefully one of the subscriber's has the 1787-90 lists and will post it? I would really appreciate knowing which Combs were in the area of Montgomery Co., VA at the time Henry was marrying Rachel Clements..... Mason signed as surety for Henry Combs in Montgomery Co., VA 1788 and is not in the 1788 tax lists for Russell Co., so suspect he was somewhere around Hawkins Co., TN or Montgomery Co., VA?? HELP???? Enough said, hopefully someone out there has more than I do..... Well, I did so today. It is not quite how I remembered it, but that is why we researcher's don't always trust the memories of our ancestor's, right? Here is the info, found in "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia" by Chalkley, Vol II - page 151: Summers vs. Summers Bill 1809. Complainants are Andrew, Philip Summers, John Fawber and Juliana, his wife; Philip Link (Sink); Christiana, his wife, and __________________, the children of Eizabeth Taylor by her former husband Nicholas Grass, show that John Summers died testate, devising lands to sons, Samuel and George Summers, with legacies to son Andrew; Philop, John and Elizabeth Summers, children of hsi son John, deceased; children of daughter Elizabeth Grass; daughter Christiana Sink; daughter Juliana; daughter Sarah. George died before his father and his portion descended to the heirs-at-law at father's death, viz: Andrew and Philip Summers, Elizabeth Taylor, Juliana Fawber Christiana Sink, Samuel Summers, Sarah Porter, John and Elizabeth Summers. Defendants are, vis: Samuel Summers; John Porter and Sarah his wife; John and Elizabeth Summers; Geroge Taylor and Elizabeth, his wife. Power attorney by Thomas Allen and Elizabeth, his wife (late Summers) of Russel County, to John Summers of said county, to recover her interest in estate of John Summers, deceased of Augusta County, dated 2d September 1812.....etc. John Cress of Wythe to John Summers of Russell County, Grandson of John Summers, deceased and legatee, dated 1812, as above.... etc. Elizabeth Summers (defendant here married Thomas Allen of Russell. So it was John Summers Sr. who was deceased and he had son Samuel Summers, also.... At any rate, he had grandchildren at the time of his death, therefore, Samuel COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO WINNEFRED COMBS AT THIS TIME. No proof at all. I wouldn't debate it with anyone. Source of my info on Stacy Combs and her parents was research of my father's sister, Cleo Ross Heiserman (1901-1992). Her source for birthdate of Stacy Combs was a family Bible. As for her relationship to Bennett and Dolly, there is a deposition that Dolly gave on behalf of Stacy's husband, Redding Putman. I forget exactly what it says, but I'll check into it. There is also a marriage certificate for Stacy and Redding, but I don't know if parents' signatures are on it. Aunt Cleo's proofs were usually pretty well documented. Anyway, the DAR accepted them in the application of Cleo's sister Ola Ross Pacifico. As for place of Stacy's birth, Aunt Cleo says Stacy's children listed NC as their mother's birthplace in the 1880 census. All of your SC activity makes that very suspect, though. JC Note: This Enoch Combs born abt 1695 who died in 1755 or 1756 was the son of William Combs and Mary Hatton daughter of Thomas Hatton. Jim: I follow you too well re Stacy COMBS' children all stating that she was b in NC on the 1880 census -- we all have those problems, I think, but I am still interested in why your Aunt Cleo believed that Stacy COMBS was born not just in NC, but in WILKES CO, NC. I'd also be interested in any theories you might have as to where Stacy COMBS acquired her given name? John: I've copied you on this email as I thought you might be interested both in Jim's response re Stacy COMBS, and also due to your Francis Ignatius COMBS having been in Surry Co, NC around the same time as Stacy COMBS' birth, which some think was in Wilkes Co, NC, as vs. SC, not to mention the above mention of Ignatius COMBS, plus we've also been researching the 'other' COMBS of Surry Co, NC, who intermarried Heavily into the Simon STACY family (both these COMBS and the STACYS from Stafford Frederick VA). Also, I think Jerry's probably feeling a bit lonesome as our only(?) MD COMBS researcher on this list right now... he could undoubtedly use some help for when we VA COMBS researchers start ganging up on him! Ergo, we'd love it if any of you would care to join us -- particularly since we think we're making headway (albeit with strong headwinds) in re probable connections between the COMBS of St. Mary's/Charles/Talbot Cos, MD, and the COMBS of Old Rappa/Richmond/Stafford VA. ===================== For those who didn't receive the original posting of a few days ago (sans my GOOF!): Hi, Jim.
