On October 14, 1780, the Sheriff of Mecklenburg County was killed by Tories that left the camp of Colonel Samuel Bryan, a prominent Tory leader in North Carolina. The Tory killers are identified as John and Richard McCombs, a Mr. Griffin and a Mr. Ridge by General Joseph Graham: "When the British were on their retreat from Charlotte, near Old Nation Ford, four of [Colonel Samuel] Bryan's men agreed to desert and go home by travelling in the night and lying in the thickets during the day; their names were John McCombs, Richard McCombs, ___ Griffin, and ___ Ridge. They had taken up in a thicket a mile from Bradley's on the morning of October [14th]. About mid day Bradley took his gun and went out to hunt some missing cattle, came on the two of them, and began to question them, and finally took them prisoners. The other two, who had been lying about twenty steps off, and whom he had not seen, came behind him and siezed him; a violent scuffle ensued, until one of them got his own gun and shot him dead. Bradley was a very stout man, and with out weapons would have been a match for all four of them; a man of cool and deliberate courage, much respected by all who knew him, and his death much regretted. A few weeks after his murderers went home, Richard McCombs and Griffin were killed, the others were taken and sent to Salisbury jail. On trial, John McCombs turned State's evidence, and from him this account was obtained; ___ Ridge was hanged." (Graham, W. A., (1904) General Joseph Graham And His Papers On North Carolina Revolutionary History, Edwards & Broughton, Raleigh, pp. 262-263 ) From the estate records of William Ridge, husband of Winnifred Combs, that Godfrey Ridge, Biram Combs and Jeremiah Combs were identified as the killers of Francis Bradley. These records also identify other Combs family members as Torys, namely, William Ridge, William Combs, John Combs, Mason Combs, John Stacy, Godfrey Cody, William Cody and Thomas Cody. If a Ridge was hung in Salisbury, there is a chance that there are court records to corroborate the names. If anyone has any documents, please let us know. I have updated my webpage on the Combs-Ridge Killing of Francis Bradley. It can be accessed at: http://www.mindspring.com/~cody/tory/bradley1.htm ©1999 Poster and Combs &c. That is one of my projects for the new millennium. This is a son of John & Pearlie Combs and is a close cousin of mine. Some of his family have tried to get him a military headstone but have not been successful in finding documentation to prove his service. He is also the cousin I have mentioned before you walked away from home one day and was not heard of again until he came home to die. So research on him is most interesting to me. Should anyone out there have known him personally, please e-mail me. As a precautionary measure, both our www.combs-families.org domain and our Combs Mailing Lists will be temporarily shut down from today, Friday, 12/31/1999 at 4PM MST to 12 Noon MST, Sunday, 1/2/2000. This temporary shutdown will apply to all websites and lists served by USGWI and USGenNet, including www.rootsquest.com, www.usroots.com and www.usgennet.org. I will be back online myself by Noon MST Sunday at the latest, and yes, I realize we are probably being "overly cautious," but not so much because of potential Y2K "glitsches," but due primarily to possible virus hackers. A reminder to all that you should *never* open an email file attachment without knowing the sender, *and* that the sender is *aware* of the attachment (mentions it in the email) since even if it's a "worm," it can be as damaging to your computer as a virus, and the sender may not even know of its existence on his/her computer. In closing, one piece of excellent news for all of us: Our Combs mailing lists no longer accept file attachments at all; thus, it is no longer possible for us to accidentally pass viruses or worms back and forth to each other via our list. This is a great find, yet another great clue toward untangling our "Squabble State" Combs (SW VA, NW NC and E TN). I can tell you were excited yourself since you left off part of the URL To all: The complete URL is: http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/cody/tory/bradley1.htm. Also, I want to look back through our records again to make absolutely certain we don't have Combs and McCombs both anywhere around this time (I seem to have a trace memory, but am aging rapidly, and as a result... ) PS To Barbara: I wonder if this could be an early sighting of our Griffis/Griffith/Griffeys?
