My Father always said that "our" PA Combs were related to all the KY Combs. ;-) Bob Combs has explained to me that the Martin Combs (1835-1911), in "my" line, was likely named for his stepmother's surname, Martin. So, I am intrigued by this query. As far as I know, this Martin was never married but left his wealth to many nieces and nephews, having died in Milton Oregon. It would have been logical for others to have been named for him, too. Research Group ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 14:05:07 -0700 From: Birdie McNutt Subject: COMBS&c.: KY-Allen Co. - Thomas & Samuel Hi Carole & Cousins, I recently have been corresponding with Myra Britt regarding our "Thomas COMBS Brick Wall" in Allen County, Kentucky. This being Thomas COMBS and his descendants. I am forwarding her message(s) with permission in hopes that someone else can recognize the families and help us document our COMBS Ancestors. My brick wall is still the father of Peter Anderson COMBS. According to his will, his father was Thomas COMBS. Thomas COMBS is found in the 1820, 1830 Census Records for Barren & Allen Co. KY, then in HH of Peter ANDERSON in 1840 with his wife Anna B. ANDERSON COMBS again in Allen County, KY. Later Ann COMBS, age 50 and her two sons Peter age 19 and James age 17 are found in 1850 census for Gibson Co., KY without Thomas COMBS. Questions! 1. Could this Thomas be a "deceased son" of Thomas COMBS born Sept 12, 1770-Dec 9, 1862? My Thomas COMBS seems to have disappeared between 1840-1850. Could it be due to a divorce or his death? 2. Could Samuel COMBS born 1834, [listed in HH of Thomas COMBS 1770-1862] be the "son" Samuel according to his will or a "grandson"? 3. Could this Samuel COMBS, b: 1834, be another son of Thomas COMBS and Anna B. Anderson COMBS? The age would fit with Peter A. COMBS age 19[1830], and James COMBS age 17[1833] in HH with their mother Anna COMBS in 1850. 4. Could the Martha COMBS, dau of Thomas COMBS [1770-1862] married to Allen L. ORE and Martha COMBS born 1830 married to Valentine RACHELS be kin? ANY HELP on this family would be greatly APPRECIATED!!! Thanks Birdie (Totty) McNutt ======== Myra Britt wrote: To: Birdie McNutt Subject: Thomas Combs Thanks for your response to my recent e-mail. My grandmother-Camilla Combs-was 1st married to Joel Temples (have not located their marriage certificate yet). They had 3 children: Bertha Temples Thomas Huston Temples (note her son w/name of Thomas) Mary Dona Temples She 2nd married Eason Haywood Stinson 3/16/1914 and had one child (my mother): Lera Gladys Stinson Driver Camilla "Mila" was born 10/23/1871 in Allen Co. and died 4/2/1957 in Fountain Run, KY. She is buried at Akersville Cemetery beside her 1st husband Joel Temples who died in 1895 at the age of 40. Mila is the daughter of Samuel Combs. Samuel Combs married 1st to Mary Ann Harrison, daughter of Samuel and Harriet Harrison of Allen County. She died 1/30/1861. Samuel 2nd married Mary F. Steenbergen, daughter of Hugh Steenbergen and Elizabeth James of Barren County. Their children are: Martha Jane Combs b. 3/1/1863, Monroe Co., KY.; d.4/1/1945, married to John Temple 6/19/1879 (buried in Fountain Run Cemetery) (I have corresponded with Martha's great grandson in Delaware) Andrew Jackson Combs b. 9/27/1864, Ky.; d.1931, married Sara Jane Huskisson, d.1935, both buried in Fairview Cemetery in New Albany, Indiana (I have talked and corresponded with Andrew's great granddaughter in Florida) Mary Ann Combs b. 2/5/1866; d. 1/23/1868 Margaret Isabella "Belle" Combs, b. 6/15/1868, Missouri, d. ?; married to John Wiley Huskisson 11/22/1885. Both are buried in Owensboro, KY. (I have corresponded with Belle's ggranddaughter in Oregon--have a picture of Belle and John) Samuel Combs, Jr., b. 12/30/1869, Missouri; d.? have no info on this one at all. Camilla Combs (see beginning of this e-mail) **Zur Combs, b. 4/21/1873; d. 10/17/1875 **Louisiann Combs, b. 1/4/1875; d. 9/13/1876 (**this is where the guy in Delaware says that Zur and Louisanna Combs are Samuel's parents because of his 2 children's names, this could be so but his birth year according to 1880 census would have been 1834 and not 1843 as they are saying) James Henry Combs, b.6/23/1879, Kentucky; d. 5/25/1945, Allen Co., KY., married to Mazzie Thompson. Both are buried beside my grandmother at Akersville Cemetery. I have lots of info on the Stinson side of the family but it seems no one knows much about the Combs side of the family. I have an old tin-type photo that was found in Camilla's trunk that I think is of Sam Combs. I will forward that by separate e-mail. You bring up lots of interesting points concerning Thomas Combs. It may turn out that Zur Combs (son of Thomas Combs Sr.) is the father of my Samuel Combs but all of my research points to Samuel Combs in the household of Thomas Combs born in 1834. I am also basing this on the LDS web site where Sam's marriage record lists him born in 1834. Zur Combs is found in Barren County and my grandfather Sam and his family always lived around the Puncheon Creek section of Allen County. That is where my grandmother lived, my grandfather, my mother and my father and a brother lives there now. I live in Bowling Green, KY. I have been looking for the burial site of Sam Combs---No Luck. He is thought to have remarried after Mary Steenbergen but have not located a marriage license. A "cousin" in Florida says he is buried in Beaver Dam, Ohio Co., KY. and his father was Thomas Combs. Have not been able to verify any of this yet. Let me know if any other info I can furnish that might help. Myra Britt. ©2000 Individual: Poster and Compilation: Combs &c. Andrew & Samuel Hi Carole & Cousins, Here is more information for the Camden County, Missouri web page. Sent with permission. This is Samuel Combs b. 1834 from Allen County, Kentucky and his brother Andrew Jackson COMBS son's of Thomas COMBS 1770-1862. This is most likely the Samuel born 1834 & found in HH of Thomas COMBS rather than the Samuel born 1843 that is listed by some researchers as being the son of Thomas COMBS [1770-1862]. Question: What if any kin was Samuel COMBS to Levi COMBS, John L. COMBS, Saphony COMBS VAUGHT, Elijah COMBS, Fanton COMBS SANDS, Thomas COMBS, James H. COMBS, William E. COMBS and Joseph COMBS of Morgan Co. and/or Pettis Co's Missouri? Could John L. COMBS b: 1780, be the same as the John COMBS b: ca 1780, who married to Susannah Cleghorn both found in Clark County, Indiana? I find it very interesting to see the familiar names of John, Joseph and Thomas COMBS who were found in Early Kentucky Records and of most interest, Warren, Barren and Allen Co's.
