NOTE: The following is a first rough draft of this report, and a very "tentative" genealogy


III. Sarah UNDERWOOD, born before 1645, died after 1702 in (of) Westmoreland Co, Virginia; married between 1650 and 1668, Col. William PIERCE (son of Capt. William PIERCE), died in 1702 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia. Known Issue: Ann PIERCE; Elizabeth PIERCE; Mary PIERCE; Margaret PIERCE; John PIERCE; Sarah PIERCE.

Note: Although Sarah, wife of Col. Wm. PIERCE is believed to have been the Sarah UNDERWOOD named in the will of Col. John UPTON, and the "sister PIERCE" named in the will of Elizabeth UNDERWOOD Taylor Slaughter Catlett Butler, the latter is thus far the only documentation located re her relationship. If so, it is quite insubstantial. A growing collection of records that may be of assistance in strengthening (or destroying) the case for Sarah follows:

20 Feb 1701 - 7 April 1702. (Westmoreland Wills, p. 31) Will of William PIERCE. Bequests to Pierce and Stanley GOWER [sons of Francis GOWER and his wife who was a daughter of Col. William PIERCE], to grandson Samuel BAILEY, grandson William PIERCE, daughters Elizabeth BRIDGES, Margaret GRAHAM, Mary ROWSEY, mentioned son John deceased and to wife Sarah one negro and her thirds of the estate. 25 Jun 1707 (Westmoreland Co VA Court Orders) Upon the Petition of Sara PIERCE, Relict of William PIERCE, of this County, Gent. deced, on behalf of William PEIRCE their grandson now under the tutorage and care of Nathaniel POPE, merchant, now in England, who married one of the daughters of William and Sara PEIRCE (Sparacio…)

Notes: Daughter Elizabeth PIERCE Bridges m Nathaniel POPE, guardian of the grandson, William PIERCE who was named in the will of Col. Wm. PIERCE. This or another of the 50,000 Nathaniel POPES was alias Nathaniel BRIDGES. The latter's mother, Mary SISSON, m (1) Nathaniel POPE; (2) Anthony BRIDGES; (3) another David WICKLIFFE, the brother of the above Robert WICKLIFFE; and (4) Lewis NICHOLAS.
