The group as a whole needs to examine the possibility of a migration to the Tonoloways from the Massachusetts - Maine - New Jersey direction since there is evidence of a close match by a surname involved with the Primitive Baptists, some of which turned up in the Tonoloways Settlement from New Jersey. The name COOMBS is also more common as a spelling in the New England area than other areas of the country.

Boone Co, IN descendants should examine a potential connection with COMBS-COOMBS of Nelson Co, KY area due to migration of John, Samuel and Edward COMBS-COOMBS assoc’d with the Tonoloways. The migration patterns of their descendants should also be taken into account.

Due to the mutation of Denman COMBS of Newton Co, IN and William COMBS of Perry Co, OH and VA, their lineages and potential relatedness need to be studied further since they are distinct from all other person’s tested and imply a unique relationship. They probably come from a specific branch of Joseph COOMBE. This is especially important since the DNA of the descendants of Joseph COOMBE does not appear to mutate quickly.

The John Joseph COMBS line for Hampshire Co, VA has a unique mutation none of the other lines do which may be the clue to the branch from which this line descends.

There are three branches of COMBS that have been distinguished by DNA findings -- Joseph, Archdale and William. This improves on the research in Josiah Combs´ work which assumes William Combs RW is the son of Mason Combs Sr. Chapters IV & XX.

Joseph Combs Two lines are proven directly to the progenitor Joseph, father of John & Joseph believed to marry Bullitt sisters. These lines need to connect further back likely in the British Isles. The Arkansas line needs further study to match up, particularly in Clark Co, KY. The Loudoun Co, VA line could benefit from maternal DNA testing to determine the connection further.

The lineage of William COMBS and Sitha Stacy needs DNA testing to validate the assumption that this is the correct William of Mason COMBS Sr. These lines need to be compared to other branches of early Virginia and surrounding colonies. Eventually, these will need comparison with the British Isles COMBS. The Archdale COMBS line may need further comparison with Continental Europe COMBS.

Share the same ancestry; Convergence needs to be determined. This ancestry appears to tie directly to COMBS from Maryland. This does not preclude the need to study Virginia COMBS, particularly the Westmoreland Co, VA Philip COMBS.

Further examination is underway to study the COMBS of St. Mary’s County, MD, particularly the descendants of Enoch COMBS. A comparison with the descendants of Enoch COMBS, sometimes described as the Catholic branch who went to the Bardstown KY area, is needed to validate this branch is of Enoch COMBS in the absence of a paper trail or better information on the participant from Leonardtown. An explanation for the differences and application of the 464 series is underway.

This line which includes a Biram COMBS is unrelated to the Biram COMBS line in Perry Co, KY assuming the research indicates the Biram of Perry Co, KY is a descendant of Archdale COMBE of Old Rappahannock Co, VA and England.

Earlier COMBS of Vigo Co, IN, of a William and a Biram, should be studied to identify males who could test for those lines to compare for furthering the ancestry of Elihu COMBS.

This group clearly has faster mutating amino acids than our experience with other groups. The geographic distribution includes Arkansas, Tennessee, Canada, and Indiana. The use of Johnathan and Jonathan is a clear clue here as to relatedness. NEXT RESEARCH STEP:

A distinct finding here is a direct match by the DNA for Dennis Combes branch of this line. Finding where and when mutations occur will help determine the relationships and ferret out the distinct branches of this group. Some mutations are clearly showing there is relatedness among some of the persons tested. This should be used as a directional clue for further family history study.

The connection of Dennis Combes branch should be pursued to see what are the potential links into other groups in New Jersey.

Identifying the possible openings for connecting the later branch of Samuel Stockwell COMBS with the earlier male lines of the Middlesex Co, NJ group should be done. Also, a close look at records like tax lists that could show a group dropping out at a specific time (annually) may help the later branch connect. As to the TN line with 3 differences, there needs to be an effort to test other branches that converge as far back as possible to rule in or out a mutation that stands out as being different than all the other lines being compared. If this mutation and what generation it occurred can be determined, the ties from TN to NJ can be solidified.

The lineage genetic profile for Anthony COOMBS will be the key to determining the ancestry of Anthony in the UK or Continental Europe. The comparison of these two lineages along with another in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation solidifies the profile. The rd lineage clears up that DYS 458 should be an 18, not a 17, therefore making the lineage profile complete.

Identify COOMBS in France and England who may fit the suggested ancestral origin localities by some researchers. Examine very closely the given name pattern in most recent records in English Archives, in particular.
