As DNA matches occur there will be information that appears here clarifying the findings. The interpretations of these findings may change as more test results are added to the study. Five Colonial period Combs-Coombs &c. lineages have been confirmed linking hundreds of descendants with their shared ancestry. These lineages are outlined in the table below. This table does not include additonal Combs-Coombs &c. who have tested and are seeking DNA matches.

See Special Study: TONOLOWAYS SETTLEMENT Pennsylvania Maryland ~ mid 1700s NEXT RESEARCH STEP:The group as a whole needs to examine the possibility of a migration to the Tonoloways from the Massachusetts - Maine - New Jersey direction since there is evidence of a close match by a surname involved with the Primitive Baptists, some of which turned up in the Tonoloways Settlement from New Jersey. The name COOMBS is also more common as a spelling in the New England area than other areas of the country.See the Special Study for lineages that should be considered for comparison of DNA to the Tonoloways Settlement COMBS-COOMBS for furthering the ancestry. Boone Co, IN descendants should examine a potential connection with COMBS-COOMBS of Nelson Co., KY area due to migration of John, Samuel and Edward COMBS-COOMBS assoc'd with the Tonoloways. | AMERICA Stafford County, Virginia Colony | Joseph COMBS Descendants | CONCLUSION:There are three branches of COMBS that have been distinguished by DNA findings -- Joseph, Archdale and William. This improves on the research in Josiah Combs´ work which assumes William Combs RW is the son of Mason Combs Sr. Chapters IV & XX. The lineage of William COMBS and Sitha Stacy needs DNA testing to validate the assumption that this is the correct William of Mason COMBS Sr. These lines need to be compared to other branches of early Virginia and surrounding colonies. Eventually, these will need comparison with the British Isles COMBS. The Archdale COMBS line may need further comparison with Continental Europe COMBS. This ancestry appears to tie directly to COMBS from Maryland. This does not preclude the need to study Virginia COMBS, particularly the Westmoreland Co.,VA Philip COMBS. Further examination is underway to study the COMBS of St. Mary's County, MD, particularly the descendants of Enoch COMBS. A comparison with the descendants of Enoch COMBS, sometimes described as the Catholic branch who went to the Bardstown KY area is needed to validate this branch is of Enoch COMBS in the absence of a paper trail or better information on the participant from Leonardtown. IN; Sullivan Co., TN | Common Ancestor TBD | CONCLUSION:This indicates probable origins and a migration pattern to Indiana, possibly by Kentucky, in the early 1800s and before, while another branch of the same ancestral group stayed solidly for at least six generations. There appears to also be a migration to TN, as well. The use of Johnathan of Jonathan is a clear clue here as to relatedness.NEXT RESEARCH STEP: Identifying the possible openings for connecting the later branch of Samuel Stockwell COMBS with the earlier male lines of the Middlesex Co. NJ group should be done. Also, a close look at records like tax lists that could show a group dropping out at a specific time (annually) may help the later branch connect. As to the TN line with 3 differences, there needs to be an effort to test other branches that converge as far back as possible to rule in or out a mutation that stands out as being different than all the other lines being compared. The comparison of these two lineages along with another in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation solidifies the profile. The rd lineage clears up that DYS 458 should be an 18, not a 17, therefore making the lineage profile complete.NEXT RESEARCH STEP:Identify COOMBS in France and England who may fit the suggested ancestral origin localities by some researchers.
