Chapter XVII, Joseph Combs, of Stafford and His Descendants

Page 94, 1. Joseph COMBS I is actually first found in the records of Stafford Co, VA is actually in 1723. See Combs &c. Research Reports for Joseph COMBS, Sr.; his sons, Joseph COMBS II, and John and Seth BULLITT Combs, Sr.; his daughter, Jane COMBS Ashby, and his grandsons, John & Sarah LUTTRELL Combs, Jr., Cuthbert & Sarah EVANS Combs, Sr.; and Stephen & Barbara ALLEN Combs. As is noted in the Combs report for Joseph COMBS, Sr., he is not a documented son of John COMBS of Richmond. Other possibilities in regard to the ancestry of Joseph I include John's brother, William COMBS; their father, Archdale COMBS I of Old Rappa, or any of the Early COMBS to Maryland (some of whom may have also been kin to Archdale). One strong (and logical) reason for believing Joseph I was "somehow kin to" Archdale COMBS is that the name Archadial [sic] is found among his descendants many years later in Clark Co, KY (research in progress).

Page 95, 2. It is now believed quite possible that John COMBS of Richmond had only one wife, Hannah "Ann." Her surname is not known, although she may have been a MASON (research in progress). John was born 1662-1664, and was married by 1694 (how much earlier not yet known). William and Elizabeth COMBS Kendall were still residing in Richmond Co, VA (on the Westmoreland Co, VA line) at the time of John's death in 1716/7.

Page 95, 3. John COMBS resided adjacent to both Joseph and Josiah MASON of Richmond Co, VA. Their relationship, if any, to the MASONS of Stafford Co, VA, remains unknown (research in progress). Joseph COMBS' birth year is unknown other than that it was probably bef 1685 (Much before and it becomes physically impossible for him to have been a son of John). Another reason for doubt as to the closeness of the relationship between Joseph COMBS I and Mason Combs, Sr. (s/o John) is that neither Joseph nor his descendants ever named a son Mason, and Mason never named a son, Joseph (so far as is known - research in progress). Nevertheless, Joseph's line does include a descendant with the given name Archdale (in Clark Co, KY) so somehow ...

Page 96, 5. No evidence of military service in Frederick Co VA has been found for John COMBS, presumed "father of the eight." His son, RW John "8" COMBS of Perry Co, KY, served in Shenandoah Co, VA (carved out of Frederick in 1772). His son, Mason "8" COMBS (d ca 1822, Perry Co, KY), did not marry Jane "Jennie" RICHARDSON in Frederick Co, VA (where Benjamin COMBS, h/o Sarah RICHARDSON, was apparently residing at the time of his marriage (pre-1774)), but down in Wythe Co, VA at least twenty years later.

Page 97, 6. The source for statements made in reference to possible relationships between descendants of Mason COMBS, Sr. and Joseph COMBS I are the Dickey Diary Interviews. No descendants of Mason COMBS, Sr. have been found with the middle name of either Cuthbert or Calmes yet. It was believed for some time by many researchers that Mason C. COMBS (s/o Jeremiah and Charity RHODES Combs and gs/o Mason COMBS (Jr.?) of Hawkins Co, TN) had the middle name Calmes, but it has been subsequently documented that his middle name was Canaday (Land Records of Madison Co, AR)
