Page 118. 1. Carroll Co, VA was not formed until 1842 when it was established from Grayson Co VA, (Wythe < Montgomery) which also gained land in 1806 from Patrick Co, VA. Moreover, what is now Carroll Co, VA was on the North Carolina line and its creeks actually drained into Surry Co, NC (due to territorial disputes between Virginia and North Carolina, men might have been taxed in either state through at least 1820). Nevertheless, a search of all these counties has never resulted in the finding of a record for any Ned or Edward (or Ted, etc.) COMBS, and this may be in error (Could "Ned" have been "Zed" aka Zedekiah?). The information that "Ned" COMBS originally settled on the Yadkin River might indicate a relationship to either the Mason Combs, Sr. or the Francis Coombs families of Yadkin River, Surry Co, NC, and it appears possible that the Combs-Johnson-Hawk-Payne Families of Grayson Co, VA were somehow linked to the Combs-Johnson-Hawk-Payne Families of Warren Co, TN, who included Jeremiah and Simon COMBS, documented sons of Mason COMBS (Jr.?) of Hawkins Co, TN.
