Combs &c. Research Footnotes for
"The Combes Genealogy" by Josiah H. Combs
See Special Copyright Restrictions
Appendix (pp. 191-198)

Pages 191-8. 1. The Appendix to The Combes Genealogy was not written by the author, but instead consisted of (apparently) submissions by descendants of the four genealogies included: Abijah "Bige" Benjamin COMBS; Bert T. COMBS; Earle Bryan COMBS; and Leslie COMBS II. This Appendix not only includes a number of errors, but is also in conflict with the main manuscript, and not all of those errors have been footnoted here. See also the applicable Combs Counties of Record and Combs Family Research Reports), as well as the General Table.

Pages 191-2. 2. Among the errors in the Abijah "Bige" Benjamin COMBS Genealogy are: (1) there was no county by the name of "King Parrish." (2) Danger Nicholas "8" COMBS was the s/o John & Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr., and grandson of Mason COMBS, Sr. (3) Granville Pearl COMBS was the s/o Nicholas "Bird-Eye" COMBS (s/o Nicholas "8" & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr.) and Elizabeth COMBS (d/o RW John "8" COMBS). The name of his first wife remains unknown, but she was apparently the mother of his son, Robert COMBS, who may have been a.k.a. Crusoe COMBS (See p. 192). His second wife may have been a.k.a. Malinda, but in all records located thus far (Perry Co, KY), was listed as Marinda BRASHEAR, not Malinda. His last wife, Alice "Alsey" (Elsie Dutch) COMBS, was the d/o Jesse & Polly BOLLING Combs, widow of Joseph DAVIDSON. See also Combs &c. Families of Perry Co, KY in regard to the marriages and children of both.

Pages 193-4. 3. Among the errors in the Bert T. COMBS Genealogy are: (1) There is no "King Parrish" in Virginia. (2) Neither the maiden name of Sarah, wife of Mason COMBS, Sr., nor the date of her death are known (Two other male Combs married women named Sarah RICHARDSON, which may account for the confusion). (3) William COMBS, Sr., s/o Mason COMBS, Sr., m Seth STACY, not Nell CLOUD (who "is said" to have been the w/o RW William "8" COMBS). (4) The only John COMBS known to have died in Washington Co, KY, with or without a wife named Margaret, was RW John "8" & Margaret COMBS (s/o John and Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr.; however, he did not marry in 1848, but died that year.

Pages 195-196. 4. The first two generations of the Genealogy of Yankee Baseball Hall of Famer Earle Bryan COMBS are the same as those listed for Abijah "Bige" Benjamin COMBS (See Footnote 2 above). Samuel COMBS (s/o Nicholas "8" and Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr.), m Nancy CORNETT (d/o RW William & Mary EVERAGE Cornett) in Clay Co, KY (Seeking source for birth and death dates). Elsewhere in the manuscript, William COMBS (s/o Samuel & Nancy CORNETT Combs) is listed as having m (1) a Mary BEGLEY whereas this biography lists her name as Letha Ann BEGLEY, which agrees with Perry and Lee Cos, KY records (See also Owsley Co, KY for records of this family). Also note that Addie, d/o James Jesse and Nannie BRANDENBURG Combs, is apparently listed as either having m a BRANDENBURG or had the middle name of Brandenburg, but on Page 136, is listed as having married a PENDLETON.

Pages 197-8. 5. Among the errors in the Leslie COMBS II Genealogy are the identification of the wives of Joseph COMBS I of Stafford Co, VA as Ann and Hannah (It appears that they may have been confused with John COMBS, Sr. of Richmond since the name of Joseph COMBS I's wife remains unknown). Also note that Gen. Leslie COMBS I m twice, the first having been in 1818 in Fayette Co, KY, to Margaret TROTTER; the second in 1849 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Mary Elizabeth BROWNELL.
