"COMBS, Moses Newell: manufacturer. Born Morris [sic] County,New Jersey, 1753; married Mary HAYNES; father of thirteen children (including Davidand Isaac); died April 12, 1834. COMBS became a tanner and shoemakerin Newark, New Jersey, circa 1781. In 1790 he became the first to exportgoods manufactured in Newark. In 1806, he was treasurer of the Springfield-Newark Turnpike Company. Co-founder and director of the Newark Fire InsuranceCompany, from 1794 to 1818 he conducted the first night school (also oneof the first free schools) in the United States for his employees and apprentices.Combs died at the age of eighty-one."

According to the DAR File of Mrs. Marie Louise BEEMAN Beers (abstracted): RWSgt. Moses Newell COMBS (1754-1834) enlisted, 1776, under Capt.CalebSAYRES and subsequently served in BALDWIN'S artificers. His pensionwasallowed, in 1832, for one year's actual service as artificer and one assergeant in New Jersey militia. He died in Morris County, N. J.; m. 1779MaryHAYES (1760-1816). SMALL, Ephraim applied 16 July 1832 Kennebec Co ME.  He was b 1760 Harpswell MA [ME] and he lived there until 1782,then moved to Bowdoin MA
[ME]. He md Dorcas Coombs 26 April 17801, both were of Harpswell MA [ME]. Sol d 8 Jan 1842 in Bowdoin ME and his widow lived theer when she applied 5 April 1843 in Kennebec Co ME. A son Amos Small age 48 was a resident of Bowdoin ME in April 1843 and he stated his parents had 13 children but did not give their names.  MA Line, W22269. (Extracted by Thom Montgomery from Rev. STAPLES, Stephen [Staple].  md Charity Coombs 17 July 1780 at Brunswick in Cumberland Co MA [ME]. Sold died in May 1814. Wid applied 29 Aug 1838 at Lisbon in Liuncoln Co. ME age 77. Sold's wife Mary had applied13 Feb 1843 Lincoln Co ME aged 86. He md Mary Mason 25 April 1786 and died 13 Jan 1842 at Bowdoinham ME aged 85 years 3 months and 6 days. Familydata in order written: Mary d/o Josiah Parlin and his wife Mary was b 6 Dec176?, Josiah Parlin b 5 May 1730, Sarah Hutchins b 5Oct 1734, John s/o Johnand Sarah Temple b 7 Oct 1756 and d 13 Dec 1756 "his" wid Sarah Temple mdlast day of Feb 1765 to Josiah Parline and their first son was  15 Feband died 19 Feb 176?, Sarah b 28 Dec 1766, Josiah s/o Josiah and Sarah Parlin b 24 Mar 1769, "Elisah" s/o Josiah and Sarah Parlin b 28 Nov 1771. The wid Sarah Parline d 12 Sept 1808. John Temple b 23 Jan 1787 and d 7 July 1802, Betsey Temple b 23 May 1790, Abijah Temple b 26 May 1792. In 1820 Sold had referred to Charity Coombs age 17 who lived with him [he had taken her to raise] Boston MA but no relationship to sold's widow was given. Continental and MA Line. WOODRUFF, Gad md Azuba Hart 2 Nov 1781, sold lived at Lenox in Berkshire Co MA when he enl. sold. d 12 Feb 1783 and his widow md 2nd Ebenezer Comes 2 or 24 June 1783 & she died 4 May 1838. Wid applied 7 May 1845 at Litchfield in Herkimer Co NY, wid d 4 Sept 1848. It was not stated whether sold andwidow had any children or not, widow (Azuba Hart Comes, former widow)and her 2nd husband Ebenezer Comes children were:  Betsy b 17 Jan1786 and she died 14 Feb 1797, Polly b 6 May 1789 and d 22 Apr 1805, Clarissab 3 Aug 1794 and she d 18 Apr 1826, Ebenezer b 31 May 1798 and m Marthy Ball16 Dec 182, Elizabeth b 12 Jan 1801 and she md.Chester Derby 25 Feb 1822,Nancy b 15 June 1803 and d. 19 Dec 1800 [sic!!], James b. 1 Sept 1805 andhe md a Nancy Mason 5 Feb 1829. Sold's wife Azubah Hart was b. 12 Feb 1763,Lenory or Lenora Comes was b 24 Jul 1784 and she md Ebenezer Cook 16 Jan1807. Sol's wid d 4 Sept 1848 leaving children: Ebeenzer Comes, James R.Comes, Elizabeth Derby and Lenora Bacon, a Nathaniel and Joseph Ball werewitnesses but no kinship was stated.
