Who is this Nicholas Combs? The only Nicholas found in Maryland records thus far is a muchlater one - an 1832 Nicholas, s/o Joshua, gs/o Joseph & Sarah(JENKINS?); and ggs/o William and Winnifred ENZEY Combs of Charles Co MD.A possible "clue" might be the Nicholas Combs, s/o Unknownand Ann RICE Combsof Breckenridge Co KY.

McNEELY, David, born10/15/1758 Augusta Co., VA; enlisted age 18; 14th VA Regiment;applied for his pension30 Oct 1832, Madison Co., AL wherehe died 7/19/36. His daughter, Nancy BARNETT declared that hemarried 2/23/1789 (no location given), but Madison Co KYrecords show 5/7/1789, to Rebecca DICKEY. She d 19 Sep 1852 at the house of the daughter, Nancy BARNETT (wife of Hugh BARNETT)in Madison Co TN, aged 85-86. Several BARNETTS as wellas CULVERS, with some children/grandchildren residing in MadisonCo TN and some in Madison Co AL, are mentioned, and other records (bible?) listed include Louisa SIMPSON, d 11Jun 1853, William A Combs, d 9/30/1846; John COOMBS[sic] d 5/15/1847, age abt 57. The relationships of these individuals,all apparently kin to theBARNETTS, was not stated. (Reel 1698.Reel 1698. F-W1051, Virginia/WestVirginia Genealogical DataFrom Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty LandWarrant Records,Volume 2, Patrick Wardell, p. 237; and GenealogicalAbstractsof Rev. Notes: OnePollyMcNELLY [sic] m a John Combs on 5 Feb 1820 in MadisonCo, AL.On 3 Aug 1841, also in Madison Co, AL, a William A. Combs m MarthaBARNETT. The 1850 Madison Co TNCensus shows what is apparently a widowed Martha Combs,aged 27,with children, in the household of Hugh & Nancy McNEELY Barnett(her parents?). Whether these Combs came to Madison Co, AL withthe McNEELYSfrom Madison Co, KY remains unknown. One Combs marriage(to HEATHERLY) hasbeenfound in Madison Co KY,but No Combs by surname have been found in that countyasyet.

Note, however, that John MILLION, brotherof Sarah Ann MILLION Combswas a resident of Madison Co, KY, and that hisniece, ElizabethMILLION, m in 1823, possibly in Stafford Co, VA,a John M. Combs, and see a John M. Combs listed on the 1840 MadisonCo, AL census index. Also note that descendants of the John & Sarah MABRY Combs family of Grainger & Jefferson Co, TN wereearly inMadison Co, AL (where Carlton Combswas born), and also that numerous Warren Co, TNresidents removed to Madison Co, AL in the 1810s-1830s,a numberlater moving on to Madison Co, AR- named after their home county. It is not yet known if any ofthe Warren Co, TN Combs (earlier from Hawkins Co TN)removed to Madison Co, AL, only that there were early Combs inthat county.

James FOSTER and George MILLS; also gave affidavits. The FauquierCounty Clerk at the time was; John WILLIAMS. Col. Unknown Combs. RW Soldier Dudley BROOKE applied forhis pensionin 1833 in Robertson Co., TN, declared he wasb 03 Jul 1762 in ChesterfieldCo VA; & at age 4 movedto Buckingham Co VA where he enlistedand that he livedthere many years after the war… He first enlistedin 1777,in Capt. WHITE'S Company; in 1778, again enlisted; in 1779 enlistedunder Lt. Henry JOHNSON, and Col. Anthony NEW; enlisted againin Capt. RichardPHILIPS Company; in 1781 served seven monthsin Capt. Robert CAREY'S Company,Col. COMBE'S Virginia Regiment.In 1802, he left Louisa Co VA where he was then livingand removed to Robertson Co, TN. Note: The above Col. COMBE has not yet been identified.No Robert CAREY or CARY VA military record located as yet. NoCAREYS appliedfor Pensions with VA Service. Among the CARY RWPension applications is aWilliam CARY, b 14 Apr 1756, ChesterfieldCo VA, where he lived atenlistment. In 1808 he moved to ClaiborneCo TN, and in 1829 to Cumberland Co KY where he appliedfor his pension on 13 Aug 1832. Notknown if a relationship betweenhim and Capt. Robt. CAREY above. No Combsfound in any of Buckingham,Chesterfield or Louisa Cos VA during the periodof the RW (ca1776-1783).
