Rufus Edgar COMBS, born 1 July 1887 in Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, USA, died 25 January 1980 in Boliver, Polk County, Missouri, USA. Married to (1) Ruth Olive STARKEY 6 February 1915 and to (2) Mamie Ida McNUTT 12 September 1928. Rufus Edgar COMBS is the son of John William COMBS and Matilda Jane BURRUS and the grandson of William COMBS and Elizabeth ELLIS.
In 1970, Rufus Edgar Combs, age 83 years, began recording his life story on tape. Rufus Edgar died 25 January 1980. During the late 1990’s, the tapes were copied to a set of six compact disks (CD’s). His daughter-in-law, Emily Ann Siemens Combs, transcribed the CDs verbatim in 2000. Each chapter includes the contents of one CD (in numerical order). The transcription is as accurate as possible; hence, the spelling of several words is intended to “reproduce” Rufus Edgar’s pronunciation and provide an “authentic” transcription.
