Barnstaple, a port, borough, market town and parish, having separate jurisdiction, situated in the northern division, hundred of Braunton, is less than a mile southeast of Pilton, less than two miles north of Bishops Tawton, 2-1/4 miles northwest of Landkey, 2-1/2 miles northeast of Tawstock, 4-1/2 miles northwest of Swimbridge, 38 miles northwest of Exeter, 8 miles northeast of Bideford, and 193 southwest of London. In 1588, it fitted out three ships for the fleet of Elizabeth, to repel the Spanish Armada, and during the civil war in the reign of Charles I., it was distinguished for its adherence to the cause of the parliament, and was the scene of frequent conflicts, being alternately in the possession of each party till its final surrender to General FAIRFAX, in 1646." Isaac ALLERTON, partner of Sir Ferdinando GORGES, and maternal uncle of Sarah PRIEST (d/o Digory and Sarah ALLERTON Priest) who married ca 1630, probably in Plymouth Colony, Massachussetts, John COMBE. According to this same source, The White Angel also made a voyage in 1631, from Bristol, England to Saco, Maine, whose passengers "returning from England" included Isaac ALLERTON and _____ SOUTHCOTT, and whose cargo consisted of "cattle and provisions for the Bay and Plymouth" (Winthrop, Journal, I, 65)
