Dalwood, a village and parish on the hills, 2.48 mi. south of Stockland, Devonshire; 3.34 mi. northwest of Axminster; 4.34 north of Colyton; 4.48 southwest of Chardstock (Devonshire and/or Dorset); five miles south of Yarcombe; 5 miles southeast of Upottery, 6 miles southeast of Combe Raleigh, 8 miles southwest of Combe St. Nicholas, Somerset and 7 miles northeast of Gittisham... formerly a detached portion of Dorset ... a chapelry of Stockwood. In Fordington Liberty, originally in Dorset, transferred to the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Exeter in 1836. (White, 1850) Lewis (1830) lists Dalwood as "a chapelry in the parish of Stockland, within the liberty of Fordington, Dorchester division of the county of Dorset, though locally in the hundred of Axminster, county of Devon, 3-3/4 miles WNW of Axminster, containing 522 inhabitants." (Lewis, 1830)
No Combe visitation has been located for Dalwood; however, Combs of Dalwood do appear in the 1623 Visitation of the LaWarre/Warre Family of Somersetshire:

Lineage.--Mathew WARRE, Serjeant-at-Law, was son of Robert LAWARRE, by his wife, the dau. and heir of Kentesbeere. He m. Alice, dau. of William DENBAULD, and left a son and heir, John WARRE, who m. the dau. and heir of John MERIET, of Hestercombe, and by her had a son and heir, Richard WARRE, of Hestercombe, m. Joan, dau. and heir of John ATWOODE, and by her had a son, Richard WARRE, m Joan, dau. and heir of John COMBE, of Dalwood, Dorset, and by her had issue,
I. John, m. Joan, dau. of Walter STAPLETON, of Brushwood, and had a son, Robert, living 22 Henry VI, who m. Christian, sister of Richard HANGFORD, and had a son, Richard HANGFORD, and had a son, Richard, was m. Joan, dau. of Lord STURTON, and d.s.p. 22 Edward IV.

Notes: Re John ATWOOD, see also Nicholas ATWOOD who m Anne STRATFORD above, as well as Dorsetshire, England and the Burroughs-Vassal-Weare Families. Need outside help with the SMITHS; i.e., SMITH Researchers. Combs still "confused," let alone SMITH; however, given the Thomas COMBS/Thomas SMITH of the Virginia Company, this may be an extremely important record, particularly given the following record in reference to both BARKLEY and SANDYS, even though much earlier.
