West Bergholt, a parish in the Colchester division of the hundred of Lexden in the county of Essex, and 3-1/2 miles northwest of Colchester ... in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London... The church is dedicated to St. Mary. (A Topographical Dictionary of England, Samuel Lewis, S. Lewis and Company, London, 1831)
Aug. 15, 1573 Middle Temple Admissions. Edward COMBES, late of New Inn, gent., son and heir of Edward C., of Barholte Sackvelde, Essex, gent. decd. Called 9 Feb., 1578-9 (Combs &c. Middle Temple Records)
The manor Barholte Sackvelde was, according to a number of early (non-Combs) Essex records, "Barholt Sackvill alias Bergholt Sackvill alias West Barfield..." and "Barholt Sackville alias Bergholt alias West Barfold." It lies between the City of Colchester and the parish of Fordham where an Edward COMBE, father of Edward and Susan, died in 1570.
