Coffey County was created on 25 Aug 1855 by Kansas Territory from non-county area; not fully organized and attached to Anderson County "for civil and military purposes." Fully organized on 17 Feb 1857, detached from Anderson County. Gained land from Osage County on 27 Feb 1860. Coffey County became a county in the state of Kansas on 29 Jan 1861. Lost small area to Lyon County in section 14, township 20 south, range 13 east on 18 Feb 1886. This act gave Lyon County access to the Neosho River.

The earliest Combs' to Coffey County are descendants of Thomas Combs of Hampshire Co, VA >Adams Co, OH > Vermilion Co, IN

From the Lebo Enterprise, February 9, 1893

Mack Combs has the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of the wife of his bosom and of his youth, who last week was called to the great beyond. We have not learned particulars of her last illness. Trust her prospects for immortality were assured.
