Mountaineer, 107, Wants Pretty And Hard Working Wife

Jenkins, Ky., --The matrimony bee still buzzes in the ear of Uncle Jerry Combs, 107 years old, who claims to be the oldest man in Kentucky.
Uncle Jerry, whose first wife died several years ago at the age of 97, has laid down some exacting standards that his second wife, if he can find her, must meet.

She must be young, good looking, a good worker--

But let Uncle Jerry tell you.

"Now, the woman of my choice must be plump, handsome, and a hard worker. She must be willing to help me share the blessings that ought to come to me in old age.

In turn I promise to make that woman's life happy. I'm an easy going man, always looking on the brighter side of life. I'm affectionate; I'm sincere; I'll do my part and more. In turn, the girl of that description gets all my money and property at my death."

There have been some applicants since Uncle Jerry decided to remarry. He owns many acres of lands along Troublesome Creek in Knott County that are said to be rich in minerals. He has a comfortable income.

It's the fresh mountain air and plenty of proper exercise that has carried Uncle Jerry past the century mark, he will tell you. He eats and drinks moderately.

"I never worry about anything," he says.

One day Uncle Jerry walked 10 miles to the home of his oldest son, John, now 80. He walked back, too, over icy roads.

Not so many years ago, Uncle Jerry was considered a crack shot with his squirrel gun. He still can shoot accurately.

Note: This is "Tight" Jerry Combs.

"The 'Widow' Combs, who made stand against strip mining in '60s, dies at 88
By Richard Wilson

Ollie Combs whose defiance of a Kentucky bulldozer operator in 1965 symbolized opposition to strip mining, died Tuesday at the Appalachian Regional Medical Center in Hazard. She was 88 and had been ill for two years.

The "Widow" Combs, as she became known, probably did more than any other Kentuckian to draw attention ton one of the most controversial issues of the 1960s.

She gained national attention when she climbed a Knott County hillside and confronted a strip miner's bulldozer and castigated its driver, fearing the machine would cause dirt and debris to tumble onto her Honey Gap home.

Combs, then 61, etched her name in Kentucky history when she was arrested, carried down the mountainside by police and taken to jail because she violated a court order to stay off property owned by Caperton Coal Co.

"I've never been in trouble, never been in jail. I just want to live out my life in my hollow and be left alone," she said in court before a judge sentenced her to 20 hours in the Knott County Jail.

The publicity about her action led then-Gov. Edward T. "Ned" Breathitt to ask strip and auger miners to stop insisting on legal enforcement of the old broad-form mineral-rights deeds until the courts could interpret their scope. A judge also ordered earlier implementation of strip-mining regulations not scheduled to go into effect until the following month.

A few months later, Breathitt pushed tough strip-mining legislation through the 1966 General Assembly.

Yesterday, two men involved in that legislative battle recalled Combs.

"Fontaine Banks, then a Breathitt aide, and Julian Carroll, a young state representative, said Combs' courage dramatized the issue and gave it the attention that rallied public support for Breathitt's action.

"She called attention to it by people who normally might not have paid attention to what was going on," said Banks, now secretary of the state Cabinet for Human Resources.

Banks recalled that Combs addressed the legislature during the 1966 session.

"She was a small, frail-looking country woman. She had a story to tell, and she told it very effectively," he added.

"Sympathy for her, out of her name ("Widow") as much as her circumstances, contributed substantially to the necessary pressure that was required in order to enact the legislation," said Carroll, who became governor in 1975.

Eldon Davidson, of Monticello, a founder of the Appalachian Group To Save The Land And The People- a citizens group that fought strip mining in Eastern Kentucky in the 1960s- called Combs "a stubborn little old lady" who did not fear the power of strip miners. Davidson, at the time principal of Jenkins' schools, said Combs became "a leader that we need more of today in Eastern Kentucky."

Davidson said Combs' land was never strip-mined. While a coal company did put a road through a portion of it, the coal was finally removed by pulling it out of the other side of the mountain, he said.

In 1977 Combs was invited to the White House for the signing of a federal strip-mine law. The letter noted her "contribution to the passage" of the legislation. She did not attend because she later said she did not receive the invitation until the day of the signing.

Combs was a homemaker and a mother for most of her life. She attended Clear Creek Regular Baptist Church.

Her survivors include three sons, Jessie, Abraham, and Barney Combs, all of Fisty; a daughter, Pauline Slone, also of Fisty; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Clear Creek Regular Baptist Church in Knott County, with burial at Engle Cemetery at Fisty." (Transcribed by her great-niece, Combs Researcher Leslie Owens)
