SE Notes: Cynthia BAKER Combs, widow of Harrison Combs (s/o of Tarlton Combs and Elizabeth ISON). Son William H. Combs, apparently divorced from wife Eunice Emma WALKER, and his 3 children are living with his mother. His ex-wife Emma and her youngest son Laurence, are living with her father Jerry WALKER (not yet abstracted). According to researcher Jo Tambornino Chayer, Emma remarried to E. C. EVERSOLE whom she later shot. By 1920, all four children are living with Emma and her apparent third husband J. S. WRIGHT in the household of her father Jerry WALKER.

Note: She was the widow of Josiah Henry Combs. NOTE: There is a discrepancy between this death certificate and the oral family history of Commissioner Bill James who says that she was the daughter of William and Alice/ BOLING/BOLLING/BOWLING Mattingly, which is supported by the 1880 census in which William and Alcey are living in the household of Josiah and Polly Ann Combs in Perry Co. Also according to the death certificate above, she was born in Leslie Co., KY which was not formed unit 1878 from Clay Perry and Harlan Counties, KY. William Mattingly and wife Alcey resided in Clay Co., KY until the 1880 census. The Jesse Matingly above may have been confused with the father of Josiah Combs who was Jesse Combs. MACK EVERSOLE KILLED BY WIFE
After Tragedy Occurred at Their Home at Typo Saturday Afternoon
JEALOUSY SAID TO BE THE CAUSE

M. C. Eversole, one of the best known and most prominent citizens of Perry County, was shot and fatally wounded by his wife last Saturday afternoon, when Mrs. Eversole pumped five shots from a .38-caliber revolver into his body at close range. He died two hours later from the wounds. He was shot four times in the body and once in the arm. A physician, who examined the body after death, stated that any one of the four shots taking effect in the body would have been fatal. We have been unable to ascertain the cause of the terrible tragedy, but it said jealousy was the cause. Mr. Eversole was divorced from his first wife, by whom he had raised a large family, about a year ago, and married again. It is said that the last Mrs. Eversole, the one who is charged with the homicide, became jealous of the first Mrs. Eversole and that she and her husband had quarreled. Brooding over her fancied wrongs, the wife secured a revolver and waited for her husband to return to their home. He entered the house and it is said that the crazed woman placed the revolver against her husband's body and fired five shots in rapid succession. It happened so quickly that the unfornate man was unable to disarm the frenzied woman, and he fell dying to the floor. The only eyewitness to the tragedy was Mr. Eversole's six-year old son. Mrs. Eversole was brought to town and placed in charge of Jailer R. C. Baker, and the examining trial was held today, but too late in the day for us to give the results. The internment occurred Monday and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Mack Eversole was probably the mosy widely known citizen of Perry County. He was a man who made friends readily and it is said of him that his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was Sheriff of Perry County from 1905 to 1909 and made a popular official. For some time he had conducted a general merchandise store at Typo, and had other business interests in Eastern Ky.

He was the father of six children, one of whom, Miss Lydia, is a teacher in the Hazard Graded School. Mrs. Eversole's trial will probably be put over to the next term of the court.

Lynda Combs Gibson Notes: This is McCager Eversole. He 1st married Mahala (unk maiden) and 2nd married Emma Walker 30 Nov. 1912 in Perry County. Emma Walker Eversole would be the one listed above as doing the shooting.

Jay Draughn Killed by Jas. O. Combs

Tragedy Occurred on Main Street at 7:25 Wednesday Night

Draughn Received 4 wounds, from Effect of Which he died at 3 O'Clock this morning.

Jay Draughn, Town Marshall of Hazard, was shot and fatally wounded last night at about 7:25 by James O. Combs. It is said that Combs was under the influence of intoxicants and met Draughn upon Main Street in front of the vacant place between the Wootton & Morgan building and Campbell & Walker's store. It is said that Combs placed his arm around the neck of Draughn and drew his pistol, whereupon Draughn said: "Don't shoot me, Jim. I am your friend--come with me and I will take care of you." Then, according to witnesses, Combs began firing, the first shot passing through Draughn's ear and glancing on his head; another shot penetrated the right breast; another the right shoulder; and another one in the stomach. Draughn dragged himself to the door of the Hazard Pharmacy from where he was carried to the offices of Drs. Hurst and Gross, where everything possible was done to alleviate his sufferings. He died at three o'clock this morning.

Just before she passed away, she called her two daughters, Mrs.Elhannon Combs and Mrs. N.C. 2 Sep 1915 Kentucky Death Certificate Felix Stacy fa: Downey Stacy mo: Polly Combs (Source: Kentucky Vital Records Project)

SE Note This is the Felix who married Cynthia Couch. He is found throughout the Perry Co., Ky. census records. If age 93 in 1915, he would have been born 1822.

As to his father.........

There is another older Felix who appears in the 1830 Perry Co., Ky. census (with 1 young son and daughter and wife) and who is styled as Felix Sr. in 1860. This Felix is the one documented as the son of Benjamin Stacy Sr. by the Perry Co. court records. The older Felix is not in 1850 records but is in 1860 records. He disappears after 1860 (moves to Bell Co.). I think he is the elusive Downey Stacy, and if so, he was the son of Benj. Stacy Sr. Search the archives to see all discussion of this matter.

According to The Combes Genealogy, she married Remines Combs (not further identified, but see also 1941 Perry DC of Riley Combs, son of Remine and Mary Combs Combs). According to the 1850 and 1870 Perry Co., KY Census, Sallie KELLY was born in NC. The 1860 shows her as born in Kentucky. The above death certificate shows her as born in Letcher (est. in 1842 from Harlan and Perry, thus the birth would have actually been in one of the latter two counties), and the 1914 Knott Co, KY death certificate of Sallie's son, Andrew, lists Perry as his mother's place of birth (research in progress).

JIMMIE'S COMMENTS: Here is another sad tale of losing loved ones. Ella Combs was pregnant with Thomas Combs when she contracted Pneumonia. Consequently Thomas was born Premature and lived only 5 days. And even sader yet is Ella died 2 days later of Pneumonia complicated by Influenza. The following was taken from a list given to me, that shows what major epidemics were around at the time. "1918 Worldwide: Influenza (high point year) More people hospitalized in World War I from Influenza than wounds. US Army training camps became death camps - with 80% death rate in some camps."
