My Father married again after my mother died and I have several half sisters and two brothers most of our family are in Ohio JESSIE still lives at the Old Place and ALLIE is some where in the west I scarcely ever hear from any of the family, but I guess it is my fault because I am always (Dec.) too tired to write. I will start my letter where I left off in Sept. You see I never like to think about my people, they were fine people but they were all murdered, Shot from ambush. Grey, or blue grey changing to a dark blue steel colr (sic) when I am sick or worried, LOUISE has Irish blue eyes like my mother, LEROY has eyes like (me). So blue that thy (sic) look black some times. I know that my Father thought my eyes wouldbe weak for a long time ever time any one spoke about the strange color of my eyes he would say "Malta has eyes in the back of her head, meaning that I could see every thing in the house at once. I will be [looks like she typed 60] years old in Feb. and I can still thread my needles without glasses. Well this is all about my people for the present except that when I was about two years old a man came to Hazard who called himself FULTON FRENCH he claimed to be a verry (sic) poor man, but was never too poor to pay four men five hundred dollars each to kill any member of our family he could get out of the way. He never seemed to gain any thing by haveing (sic) them killed. A man by the name of NEWBERRY scared him to death and he died at Winchester, Ky. He only left one son MARIAN FRENCH, or whatever his name, and on (sic) daughter he was a verry (sic) wealthy man when he died. I have been sick since Oct. and I hope you will not think hard of me for not writeing (sic) sooner. I will write you and MILTON soon and tell you all of the family news; I will try to send the children something for Christmas. We had a little bit of snow on the last Thursday in Nov. It is raining here now, and looks like we are going to have a cold spell. I have been trying for a month to find some place to pack the things I have canned. There are still Cabbage Beets Carrots Turnips, and all kind (sic) of greens in the garden, but they will soon freeze now I haven't any place to store them. Love to all of the family, and write.

From your loving [looks like she tried to type Mother].

Dear Dotte,
These people that try to write about the COMBS family never get the dates right. Grandfather JOSIAH H. COMBS was in the Senate when he was murdered in the Feud in 1894. I do not know his age at that time. He and my father knew CASIUS M. CLAY well. When CLAY visited grandfather, grandpa lived at Barboursville, Ky. in a big house. He moved there when UNCLE JOE EVERSOLE and UNCLE NICK COMBS were waylaid and killed in the Feud in April 1888. They were bushwhacked on Big Creek in Perry County. JOE EVERSOLE married my mothers sister SUSAN. NICHOLAS COMBS was my fathers, IRA J. DAVIDSON, half-brother. They were burried [sic] in the same grave in the old COMBS Cemetery on the hill above the Court House in Hazard, Perry County Ky. My grandpa JOSIAH moved to Barboursville until the trial which was held there was over then moved back to Hazard where he was murdered 1894. My grandfathers (sic) hair was the color that your hair was when you were a child. Light with a redish [sic] auburn color. His eyes were Irish blue. Our strain of Cherokee came from GRANNY LIGHTFEATHER. I never knew his first name. Grannys name was NAN. Later she married grandpa DAVIDSONS grandfather. They came from Tennessee near the Cherokee Nation of North Carolina. My father IRA J. DAVIDSONS grandparents were JOSEPH DAVIDSON SR. who married CYNTHIA CHADWICK [sic]. JOSEPH DAVIDSON SR. was an attorney at law. CYNTHIA CHADWICK [sic] was a real estate agent. They lived in Jonestown, Virginia. Father's grandparents on his mothers side were JESSE COMBS SR. from Edinburg [sic], Scotland and POLY [sic] BOLEYN (BOLIN) from England. My father and mother were first cousins because in those isolated mountains you either married your cousin in those days or you never married.

mother and father [heading at top of the page]

MARTHA A. COMBS married IRA JESSE DAVIDSON of Hazard, Kentucky 1876. She died in child birth. Infant daughter was burried [sic] in her arms. Died Dec.22, 1886, burried [sic] on Christmas Eve Dec. 24, 1886. Grave on the hill above the Court House Hazard, Ky. where JESSE COMBS SR. and three sons are burried [sic]. Grandmother POLLY BOLIN and POLLY ANN COMBS also JOSIAH H. COMBS and JOSEPH DAVIDSON along with other members of the family are burried[sic] there. IRA J. DAVIDSON and MARTHA A. COMBS DAVIDSON had two living daughters. ANNA ELIZA DAVIDSON and MALTA ELLEN DAVIDSON. In 1888 my father moved from Hazard to London, Ky. with ANNIE and me. I was four years younger than ANNIE. Our mother died in 1886. My father married NAOMI PHELPS. He moved to London to get away from the Feud called the FRENCH and EVERSOLE War. Every one [sic] was mixed up in it and he had two little girls to care for. After grandpa DAVIDSON died, grandma ALCY COMBS DAVIDSON married GRANVILLE COMBS. Their children were PEGGY, NICK, CRUSOE. CRUSOE COMBS married ELLEN MAGGARD. Their children were BIGE, JOHNNIE, ALICE, ELLEN, MARGARET. PEGGY COMBS died the night I was born, Feb. 25,1884. NICHOLAS was murdered in the French Eversole Feud. My great grandparents JESSE COMBS SR. and POLY [sic] BOLIN COMBS willed all their land to their three sons, JOHN, JESSE JR., and JOSIAH H. COMBS. UNCLE JOHN was a Doctor. He died of fever. Some one [sic] shot UNCLE JESSE one night through the window while he was eating. He willed his property to JOSIAH H. COMBS. JOHNS property fell to their two sons so grandpa was the only heir. The deed making him the only heir was made in 1884. Thats [sic] where I heired [sic?] my mothers share. At that time the Eastern part of Ky. was known as Fincastle Co. Virginia until the counties of Ky were formed into a state. It was part of Virginia. Every one [sic] and their brother wants me to write them a history of the Combs family. I am feeling fine. Love to all.
