Allegany County, Maryland was established in 1789 from Washington (organized from Frederick in 1776). Garrett was established from Allegany in 1872.

Note: Allegany Co, MD was adjacent to Hardy (later Grant), Hampshire (later Mineral) and Monongalia (later Preston) Cos VA (WV) as well as now-Fulton (then Fayette) Co PA, and near to the Tonoloways Settlement of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Also note that marriages performed by Reverend Shaw, a traveling preacher, may have been performed in either Allegany, Hardy or Hampshire Cos.

Hampshire County Marriages of the 1800's, Vicki B. Horton, 1994, Matt Combs' Combs of Hampshire Co VA

Notes: John J. COMBS is listed on the 1840 Hampshire Co VA Census. Rev. SHAW was a traveling (itinerant) preacher and the marriage was apparently returned in Hampshire.

Matt Combs Note: I think the above is confusing. John J. Combs is my GGGF. He did marry Susan Melvina CRAWFORD in Allegany County, MD. I believe both were residents of Hampshire Co, VA at that time, thus making it a “Hampshire County Marriage”. See the following from the Romney, VA (now WV) newspaper. There should be no reference to Rev. Shaw regarding this marriage. The original Allegany County Courthouse records from this era were destroyed by fire but were “reconstructed” at some time. I have personally seen the reconstructed records. Romney, VA is approximately 30 miles directly south from Cumberland, MD. The North Branch refers to the North Branch of the Potomac River. At that time, and to the present day, it is not uncommon for people from neighboring states VA, WV, PA to come to Maryland to marry. I was stopped many times on the street as a young child, asked for directions to the courthouse from lost young couples. I believe the no waiting period for a marriage license and no blood test requirements facilitated the marriages.

“Married: On Saturday evening last on the North Branch, in MD, by the Rev. Mr. BRENT, Mr. John J. COMBS to Miss Susan B. CRAWFORD, daughter of Mr. Thomas B. CRAWFORD of this place.”

Note: See Article from History of Allegany County on Matt Combs's Allegany County, MD COMBS Genealogy Page.. MC note: I doubt the accuracy of the notations that John S. Combs and wife Wilhelmina Combs cannot read and write. John S. Combs was a successful businessman, a director of the Second National Bank of Cumberland, and state senator. I think it would be highly doubtful that they could not read and write.

23 Aug 1879 - The Mining Journal, Frostburg, MD

Death - William Combs, Esq., father of Senator J.S. Combs and Mrs. A.M. Devecmon, of this county, died in Oakland, Monday, aged 80 years. He was a life-long resident of this section and one among the most prominent and substantial citizens. He leaves a large and influential family connection to mourn his loss.

Since the above was put in type we learn that Mrs. Maria Morgan, of Pittsburg, daughter of the late William Combs, died Thursday afternoon in that city. Senator Combs and Mrs. Devecmon left yesterday to attend her funeral. Her remains will be interred in Oakland today.

Notes from Matt:

  1. Oakland is in current day Garrett County, MD.
  2. Pittsburg is Pittsburgh, PA.
  3. My great-grandfather, John Slidell Combs was living in Oakland, MD at the time of William's death. He was Editor and Publisher of the Mountain Democrat Newspaper in Oakland, and most likely would have written and printed an obituary for William Combs. It would be great to get a copy of that obit.
  4. This William Combs is not related to me and my line.

Died - Ida Marie Combs was born at Westernport, Allegany County, Md., March 18th, 1841, and died in Pittsburgh, [Allegheny Co] PA., Thursday, Aug. 21st, 1879. She was a dutiful child, with tender heart and a loving disposition, thinking always of other's happiness before self. At the age of 16 she joined the M. E. Church at Piedmont, W.Va., and has ever since been an active, consistent and working member. She was married to Geo. W. MORGAN, of the East Baltimore Conference. She died peacefully and happily; leaving a husband and six children, the oldest being but 13 years and the youngest an infant, born the morning of its mother's death. The children could not all be brought, and the father had to remain with them. Services were held at the residence in Pittsburgh, and the parting of husband and children was a heart-rending scene. Her remains were brought to Oakland Saturday and interred in the Odd-Fellow's cemetery Sunday, after services in the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. B. Ison.

Notes from Matt:

  1. Westernport is in Allegany County, MD on the Potomac River.
  2. Piedmont, W.Va is just opposite Westernport, MD in West Virginia.

Biographies

H. Wheeler Combs

Garrett Co. [formerly Allegany] - Among the lawyers of Oakland [Garrett Co], H. Wheeler COMBS occupies a conspicuous position. Mr. COMBS was born in Westernport, Allegany Co., MD, Feb 20, 1849. His grandfather, John COMBS, whose ancestors were of Welsh origin, was a native of Va. and moved early in life to Frostburg, [Allegany Co] MD where he married and raised a family of three children - two sons and one daughter. His occupation was that of farmer, and he died at the age of 94. Wm. COMBS, second son of John, and father of H. Wheeler COMBS, was born at Frostburg, Aug 13, 1799, and was twice married. His first wife was Maria ARNOLD, by whom he had 2 children - John S. COMBS, a merchant and prominent citizen of Lonaconing, and Althea M., widow of Thomas DEVECMON, who was one of the foremost lawyers of Maryland. His second wife was Sarah A. WHEELER, of Hampshire Co., VA by whom he had five children, only two of whom are living - Charles A (see below)., a farmer, residing near Oakland, and H. Wheeler. Wm. COMBS was a successful merchant, carrying on stores at Mt. Savage, Frostburg, Pekin Mines, Lonaconing, Bloomington, Westernport, and Franklin Mines. He was among the first who engaged in flatboating coal down the Potomac River. He died Aug 18, 1879. His wife is living with her son Charles A.

H. Wheeler COMBS was partially educated in the common schools of his county, and was employed up to the age of 17, principally as clerk in his father's stores. He then entered St. John's College at Annapolis, where he remained 2 yrs, but was bookkeeper for his brother John S. at Lonaconing and Barton. During this period he occupied his spare time in the study of law. The confinement of bookkeeping proving injurious to him, he obtained an engagement with Stoneburger & Richards, a grocery house of Baltimore, as traveling salesman, and then with H.E. Pickect & Co., importers of teas and coffees, N.Y. City. In the fall of 1870 he started a wholesale tea and spice business in Baltimore, but after carrying it on a short time was obiged, on account of ill health, to discontinue it. On 15th of June, 1871, he married Flora, dau of Israel and Eleanor TOTTE, of Yellow Springs [Greene Co], Ohio.

In the fall of 1872 Mr. COMBS purchased a cotton plantation near Natchez, [Adams Co] Miss., which he managed for 2 years. Having recovered his health he returned to Maryland, and engaged in mercantile business at Moscow, Allegany Co. His store was burned in the fall of 1875. He then became manager of a mercantile business at Danville, Knox Co., Ohio, and his wife died there Sept. 9, 1876. He continued in business at Danville about 1 year, and then resumed the study of law, attending 2 courses of lectures at the Univ. of Va. In 1878 he moved to Oakland, where he was admitted to the bar and opened an office for the practice of his profession. Nov. 13, 1879, he married Lucille, daughter of Charles and Amanda MORRIS. By his former marraige there were 2 children - Myrtle, born and died in Miss., and Leslie, born and died at Danville. J. Morris is the only child by his last marriage.

Mr. COMBS is Republican in politics and a leader of his party in the section of the state in which he resides. He was one of the electors on the Garfield ticket and is at present chairman of the State Central Committee of Garrett Co., and member of the Republican Executive Committee of the state. Though not a member of any religious denomination, he is a contributor to the support of several churches at the place of his residence. He is a Past Grand in the I.O.O.F. and also a member of the American Legion of Honor.
