Notes: See David BRAY w/CODY & ROSE. Note John SUMMERS and See Winnifred COMBS Sumner Hicks. Who was this William COMBS? A woman with a young family (apparently 6 small children based on above and 1800 census), some of whom seem to have stayed in the county based on later records. Where was the land? What happened to it? What happened to Sarah? No record of marriage between 1800 and 1810, yet not on 1810 census (unless the older woman in the HH of Bird COMBS?). Might she later become the Sarah COMBS of Floyd Co, KY?

08 Sep 1808 (CR085.508.136, Rowan Co., NC, Estate Records, Folder: William RIDGE 1785)
Mr. Jonathan HAINES:
You will please to take notice that I shall attend… at the House of Robert HOWARD in White County in the State of Tennessee on the 8th day of September next say 1808 in order to take the depositions of Wm RIDGE Jun'r, Thomas RIDGE, Mary RIDGE, Sitha RIDGE, and perhaps others, in the suit now defending in the Court of Equity for Rowan County in the State of North Carolina, the suit formerly in the court of Equity for the District of Salisbury wherein you and myself William COOK & others are defendants, when and where you may attend and Cross examine said witnesses if you see cause.
I am yours
WM T. LEWIS

(Transcribed by Combs Researcher George Baumbach)

Notes: Although a Rowan record, this is the estate file of William RIDGE, Sr. of Surry and documents that at least four of William & Winnifred COMBS Ridge, Sr.'s children were in White Co TN by 1808. No further guardianship records have been found as yet after 1788 although references are made to the four younger children as late as 1791 (William Ridge Estate File). No more is known of daughters, Elizabeth and Winnifred.

Bird COMBS (01300/11101)

Combs Researcher John Kays

Notes: Given the contents of this record, it “looks like” Bird was the s/o William & Sarah COMBS (see 1800) with a wife, daughter, mother, sister and two brothers in the HH. The two other males (younger brothers?) are 16-25 years of age (born 1785-1794). Another male is 10-15 years of age (b 1795-1800). The female 16-25 may have been his wife, the female 10-15 a sister, the female under 5, his daughter, and the woman over 45 his mother. If Sarah of 1800, her age adjusts to b 1755-1765. No marriage record located for Bird.

COMBS, Bird
1 m < 10 1 m 26-45 1 f < 10 1 f 10-16 1 f 26-45

Bird Combs is not found in the 1830 Surry Co. census. He may have already been in Monroe Co., IN by that time, or enroute, as there were three Combs marriages in Monroe Co., IN in 1831, to wit: Sarah Combs married Jesse EAST, Sarah Combs married David HARP, and Martin (known as Martin Byrd Combs to descendants) Combs married Mary FODRELL. According to Chris Combs, researcher and descendant of Martin Combs, 1842 probate records for Bird Combs show that Mary A. EAST, minor daughter of Jesse EAST was an heir of Bird Combs. This record suggests that Sarah Combs EAST was deceased and may have been the daughter of Bird Combs. Jesse EAST remarried in Monroe in 1839. According to EAST researchers, Jesse EAST was a son of John EAST and he was born in Surry Co., NC. Perhaps Bird Combs and the EAST family migrated together to Monroe Co.

Immediately following Bird Combs on the same page of the alphabetized census were: CARMICHALL, Archd
CARMICHALL, Joseph
CARMICHALL, Alexander
CARMICHALL, Sterling
CARMICHALL, Richd

SE Note: The CARMICHAELS are included here since some members of this family, including an Archibald CARMICHAEL, removed to Greene Co, IN. Pleasant Combs, son of Charles Combs, married a Sarah CARMICHAEL in Greene Co. in 1857. Archibald, Joseph, and Alexander Carmichael are found in early Monroe Co., IN records. Archibald CARMICHAEL Sr. wrote his will in Surry Co. in 1827 and he named sons Archibald, Joseph, Alexander, Sterling, and Richard.

Charles removed to Monroe Co., IN by 1840 per census records. Charles Combs was born c1794/5 in Virginia per his 1850 and 1860 census records.

Notes: Charles and Stephen COMBS “look like” the two younger sons of William & Sarah of 1800 (Bird's two younger brothers from the 1810 census.) Charles COMBS m 1819, Surry, NC, Abigail REAVIS; and Stephen m 1819, Surry Co, NC, Sally HUDSON. If sons of Sarah, she's gone missing (possibly with Bird?). Charles COMBS is on the 1840 Monroe Co, IN Census, and what may be his brother, Bird, patented land in that county in 1837. Also in Monroe Co, IN were William Riley COMBS (who "looks like" an ex-Perry Co, KY COMBS), and a Martin COMBS whose land was by that of Charles (perhaps their younger brother?).
