SM Notes: Bud COMBS, Jr. was my father. When I have time, I will send newspaper articles covering my father's death. His step-father, Charles F. COOK, is the one who hit him over the head with a pipe. I was seven years old at the time and remember it very clearly. Actually, manslaughter is not correct even though it is recorded on the DC. In actuality, my father was attempting to kill my mother, who was pregnant by several months, and my step-grandfather defended her. He was arrested for manslaughter, but was later cleared of all charges.

Martha H. COLLINS Combs m (1) Henderson “Bud” COMBS, s/o Hezekiah & Martha HUDSON Combs of Morgan and Perry Cos. Ky; (2) Charles F. COOK of Ft. Wayne, Allen Co, IN several years after the death of her first husband who was, according to Martha, shot to death while working as a sheriff or sheriff's deputy in Perry Co. during a presidential election in the 1920's. My grandmother often said that it was during the election of Calvin Coolidge. I have not been able to verify his death as yet. Arthur COMBS is the s/o Henderson and Martha COLLINS Combs. His real given name may be Henry COMBS.

According to my grandmother, she and Henderson “Bud” COMBS, Sr. had four children: Elsie M. Combs (she married a Messer from Ky); Henry (Arthur?) Combs; Delphia Lee Combs (I was named after her); and Bud Combs, Jr. (my father). Hezekiah's parents were Henry and Eveline/Evoline Combs (Eveline's maiden name was COMBS also) Henry and Eveline were first cousins. Hezekiah's wife's maiden name was HUDSON d/o Henry and Eliza Hudson. Eliza Hudson was a CAMPBELL. My grandfather Henderson (Bud) COMBS married my grandmother around 1912 in Troublesome, Perry Co, KY. My grandmother was only about thirteen when their first child, Elsie M., was born. My grandfather, Hendersson (Bud), was killed in a fight sometime in the 1920's. According to family lore, he was either a sheriff of Perry Co., or working for the sheriff of Perry Co. when he attempted to stop a fight and was shot. Supposedly this happened during the election of Calvin Coolidge for President. Have not been able to confirm this as yet.

Wayne Indiana, along with Elsie's brothers, Arthur (Probably Henry on his B.C.) and Bud COMBS, Jr. Arthur and Bud Jr. were under age. This is where Martha and Elsie met their future husbands.
