Washita Co, OK Cemetery Records

Forward by Combs Researcher Breck Combs: Owen Thomas COMBS (s/o Rufus K. & Sarah COMBS) m 1863, Moberly, Monroe Co, MO, Lucy DAVIS. Owen Thomas & Lucy A. DAVIS Combs had eleven children, nine sons and two daughters. Known children are: Ira, Hugh, Mitchey, Leslie (Mike), Roy, Maud, Stella, Cleve, Prestley or Preston (Press) and Blackstone. Mitchey and Blackstone died young. An unknown son probably died at birth. I never heard his name. Owen Thomas Combs migrated with his parents, when a boy, from Clark Co, KY, to Monroe Co, MO. He served as a Confederate soldier throughout the Civil War. He later moved to Millville, Ray Co, MO, where most of his children were born. After the Civil War he was a freighting master traveling "Ox Trains" between Leavenworth, KS, and Fort Union, New Mexico. In 1897 he and his children all moved to Washita Co, OK, where they filed on homesteads of 160 acres each. According to oral family tradition, the trip took six weeks by wagon train. Several other families came at the same time, including the MAYBERRYS.

Breck COMBS below was my father, Roy Breckenridge COMBS (1907 - 1937), son of Roy COMBS, who is also buried in this same cemetery, along with his wife, Nellie Lena (WALL) Combs.

Also buried here are Stella COMBS MAYBERRY (d/o Owen Thomas) and her husband, John; Press COMBS (son of Owen Thomas) and his wife, Lillie Mae (BABCOCK) Combs (Lillie Mae married Tom KENNY after Press died).

Leslie "Uncle Mike" COMBS (never married, was a local farmer most of his life). Leslie's dates are wrong below as he was born August 3, 1874, in Ray County, MO, died October 9, 1955, in the Elk City, OK, area.

Ira COMBS, first born of O.T., died April 17, 1904, and is buried in the Pixley Cemetery, northwest of Canute, OK. Two other children of Roy and Nellie COMBS are also buried here: Bryan O.K. COMBS and Blanche Gladys Pickelsimer.
