McMinn County was organized from Indian Lands in 1819. In 1839, Polk County, Tennessee was established from McMinn and Bradley.
Note: This site is still very much under construction! It will be completed shortly, but in the meantime we're plugging along at getting it up to date. Also note that no 1820 Census is extant for McMinn County (and most of E TN).

Notes: Neither Elizabeth COMBS, b 1770-1780, nor William COMBS, b 1780-1790, have been identified as yet. Could Elizabeth have been widow of Jonathan? Hutson JOHNSON may have been kin to an elder Hudson JOHNSON, a Baptist associate of Rev. Thomas MURRELL of Hawkins Co, Tennessee - both earlier from Henry Co, VA and to Hawkins Co, Tennessee by the early 1780s. Martin JOHNSON, step-son of Rev. Thomas MURRELL (no known relationship to Hudson JOHNSON, but certainly possible), m ca1797, probably in Hawkins Co, Tennessee, to Sarah COMBS, b 1779, NC, and witnessed a land trust for Mason Combs of Hawkins TN in 1801. A David HILER (or BILER?) witnessed the 1797 Hawkins Co, Tennessee deed of RW Robert BROWN to Martin JOHNSON for land on Dodson's Creek (Raleigh DODSON, Sr. had deeded sd. land to RW Robert BROWN in 1794). According to Dodson's of Northfarnum Parish (Lucas, Williams, Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, p. 23 & p. 43, hereinafter DNFP ), the above Jesse DODSON, was b 22 Nov 1752, in now-Fauquier Co, Virginia, s/o Thomas DODSON, Sr., d 1739-1740 [sic], Richmond Co, VA; and h/o Ruth DODSON, d/o Abraham & Barbara DODSON of Richmond & Fauquier Cos VA (& Pittsylvania Co VA property owner); Jesse & Ruth DODSON are thought to have been later in White and Warren Cos, TN (DNFP, but it is possible that this Jesse DODSON was confused with the Jesse DODSON (s/o Thomas "2nd Fork" DODSON of Hawkins Co, Tennessee) who m in 1793, Halifax Co, Virginia, Judah COMBS (d/o George & Phebe COMBS of Amelia & Halifax) who were later in Hawkins, Grainger & White Cos TN. Notes: William W. COMBS m Sarah UNKNOWN bef 1839, probably in TN given that (a) despite the North Carolina births listed above for Vanburen and Louise, William was probably in Tennessee well before 1830, and (b) based on later census records. It also appears that Elizabeth was (a) probably the mother of both William W. and Osburn (next); and (b) the same who was on the 1830 census, which lists Elizabeth COMBS as head of household (already a widow? possibly of Jonathan of 1819-20?), with the eldest female in that household having been born in 1770-1780. The above Elizabeth was b ca 1775 (thus presumably the same). Pally has not been identified, but of an age to have possibly been a son of Elizabeth. Also note that Jackson is listed "out of age order." Could he have been a son of Pally? Or possibly of Mary (next)? See also 1860.
