circa 1904 Combes, Texas was founded after the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway built a line through the site of Charles B. COMBE's ranch. (Although some argue that the town was named after Brownsville surgeon Joe COMBE.) A post office was established in 1911; it closed in 1920 but reopened in 1926. By 1915 the population of the community numbered 100. The population had grown to 2,042 by 1990. It is located on U.S. Highway 77 and State Highway 107 in the northwestern section of the county bordering Harlingen.
