Upshur County was established in 1846 from Harrison and Nacogdoches Counties. The county seat is Gilmer.

1926 (Sulphur Springs News-Telegram, Friday, 17 Dec 1926) Harrison COMBS- Young man about thirty years old, died Wednesday at his home near Harmony after an illness of six months, following an operation for appendicitis. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Fay GLOVER before their marriage some two years ago. Funeral and burial took place at Cypress.
