Grayson County was organized in 1792/3 from Wythe Co VA, which in turn was established from Montgomery Co VA in 1789-90. Southeastern Grayson gained land from Patrick Co VA (Henry > Pittsylvania > Halifax > Lunenburg) in 1806, that later became part of Grayson's descendant county of Carroll.

Note: Some of the Combs & Associated Lands for this county, particularly that part which later became Carroll, is part our Deed Mapping Project.

Also Note: It appears that two separate lines of Combs and a third line, COOMES, appear in the records of this county (Coomes Report still pending, but see also Louise Converse's Descendants of Zedekiah (Zadock) Combs and the Frederick Harmon Combs Manuscript, Chapter XXI of The Combes Genealogy… by Josiah H. Combs re the "later" Combs of Grayson, and see below re descendants of John and Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr.

Grantor/Grantee Deed Index : Combs Researcher Sue Elfving: No Combs were found in the Grayson Plat Book 1793-1838 (microfilm of original). The Grayson Co, VA Deed Index included no Mason Combs entries. The earliest recorded Combs in the Grantor Index was Zachariah Combs to Moses RODY (DB3:508, 8/26/1817). There were also William Combs Sr. to Isaac BEEXNER (DB8:137, 6/12/1839), and to Thomas HILL [a DOT] (DB8:407, 2/26/1841); Jeremiah Combs [assignment] to Grayson Co. (DB8:383, 1/28/1844). In the Grantee Index, was Zadok Combs from John SCUDDER (DB3:325, 5/13/1816), Wm Combs from James JONES (DB4:184, 9/26/1820), and from Joshua JONES (DB8:170, 9/2/170).

Grayson County, VA Chronology of Records

1794 Grayson Co VA Personal Property Tax List

Transcriber's Note: This list is in alpha order by 1st letter of surname, then by date, and due to the odd, non-ordered groupings of dates, it appears that there was more than one collector, and/or that dates were "arbitrarily" assigned rather than significant. The list is in very poor condition: All surnames beginning with the letter "A" are missing, and some of the "B's." The Legend is: (1) white tithables over 16; (2) blacks above 12; (3) blacks above 16; (4) Horses, and Mares & Colts (There are other categories such as Ordinary License, Stud horses, etc., but none of the above or those following had numbers in those categories)

(Transcribed from microfilm by Combs Researcher C. Hammett)

Notes: Given that Grayson was formed from Wythe in 1792/3, the above was clearly Mason "8" Combs , s/o John & Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr., and the same as Mace Combs who married on 29 Jan 1793 in Wythe Co VA to Jane RICHESON (RICHARDSON), and appears on the 1793 tax list of that county. The following is a complete list of RICHARDSONS & ROARKS (and all var. spellings). No other "familiar" names were found on this list. The dates have been included; and they are listed in the same order they appear on this list, but at this point both date and order are probably meaningless.

Timothy ROARK 3-0-0-6
Charles ROARK 1-0-0-1

Also Note: It is not known when Mason Combs left Grayson Co VA. No records have been found of him in this county, and no tax lists checked between 1794 and 1810. Mason is next recorded in Clay Co, KY in 1807, but may, in fact, have removed to East Kentucky by 1795 based on his children's birth records.

1795 Grayson Co, Tax List

Mason Combs
Henry Combs(?)

Note: This list also includes Francis CLEMENTS, John DAVIS and George QUISENBERRY, all of whom were listed in 1789 in Montgomery Co, VA on same date as Henry "8" Combs and Benjamin CLEMENTS (the 1794 Grayson List, on which his brother, Mason "8" Combs, appeared, has not been checked yet for these individuals).

Ed Note: I have temporarily (I hope) lost my copy of this list, and can't recall (in particular) why I believed Henry was on it as well as Mason… will be back to correct this shortly…

Notes: (1) William Combs, b 1780-1790 here, but 1850 Patrick Co, VA census for William, h/o Jane CARTER, shows his birth year as ca 1782, and William, s/o Zedekiah I, listed as b 1807 (Where was he in 1850?). (2) Newell Combs was s/o William and Jane CARTER Johnson and is also on the 1850 Patrick Co, VA Census. (3) Entry for Zedekiah (Zadock) is consistent with 1850 Surry Co, NC census. If this is Zedekiah, s/o William, then who was Zadock of 1840 Patrick Co, VA census? (See also 1860 Carroll and 1860 Wilkes) Jeremiah Combs was in Logan Co, VA by 1850 and John Combs in Raleigh Co, VA.

Notes: Who was this Churchwell? Thomas Combs, s/o William and Jane CARTER Combs, named a son, Churchill, but he was not born until ca 1846. This Churchwell is listed as Churchill on the 1870 Carroll Co, VA census.

Notes: Elizabeth DUNFORD was the first wife of James T. Coomes. According to Patience Northern, Elizabeth aka Betsey died after their last child Nancy was born 1855. The date of death for Elizabeth is unknown at this time. Per family tradition, James' father (name unknown) was lost at sea at some point. James T. went to sea to find his father who was lost at sea. When he returned his mother and siblings were gone. The story goes that he never saw them again. James remarried to Amanda DAVIS in 1857 in North Carolina and is next found in 1860 in Surry Co, NC and is back in Grayson by 1870. Around 1912, family begins to scatter to Taylor Co., Ky., Wayne Co., In. and Mossy Rock, Washington.

Notes: By 1850, some of the Combs of Grayson Co, VA were residents of Carroll Co, VA (created from Grayson in 1842), and others in Patrick as noted above.

Notes: James T. COOMES m 22 Oct 1857, Ashe Co, NC, Amanda DAVIS; however, his age is off by 20 years, they were in Surry Co, NC in 1860. It would appear the elderly couple John and Lydia DAVIS were relatives of Amanda. His 1880 census record indicates he was age 64 with parents both born in England.
* Patience Northern states the Census is as COMES

[Nancy was probably a Civil War widow.]

LC Notes: These appear to be the same family. Actually, Nancy's age in the 2nd household was closer, but Isaac's Initial in the first and Malinda, rather than Sarah C. makes me believe it's the same family as the 1850 Carroll Co, VA Household of Nancy Combs, d/o Joseph and Caroline WILLS Combs. See Zadock Combs Descendants for more; however, also note that one Richard Stephen Combs stated he was b in 1853 in Carroll Co, VA and that his parents were both born in Virginia, but came to Crittenden Co, AR in 1876. If so, he was apparently not the s/o Nancy since she was in the 1880 household of daughter, Sarah Malinda, who had by then married John W. POOL.

W. TAFT.

Virginia Grayson County Court Clerks office Dec 3, 1896 The forgoing deed was fully proven in the office the above date as to James T. COOMES by the oaths of James A. COOMES and A. W. TAFT subscribing witnesses thereto. E. L. LUNDY, Deputy Clerk of Grayson Co. (Transcribed by Coomes Researcher Patience Northern who adds: There is possibly a Coomes graveyard on this property. There are some people (I am still looking for their names) in Grayson Co. who have been gathering cemetery records of Grayson Co. in order to put them on computer. The Grayson Co. Hist. Soc. has no record of a cemetery in the Peach Bottom area. Maybe this land transfer info. can give them a direction in which to look. James T. COOMES, by oral family tradition, came to Grayson Co VA from Maryland where he became separated from his family (probably English, Irish or Scots-born), never to see them again. He is not believed to be related to any of the Combs Families of Grayson, but from a different line entirely.
