Pleasants County, Virginia (now West Virginia) was created in 1851 from Wood, Ritchie, and Tyler Cos. The county seat is St. Marys. Adjacent counties are Wood, Ritchie, Tyler, and Washington Co, Ohio, on the north.

SE Notes: The ancestry of James A Combs is unknown but he did come from Hampshire Co. The death record (see below) of James B Combs states his parents were James Anison Combs and Susan CORBIN. Hampshire Co, VA records show this couple were married 17 Feb. 1838. Unfortunately, the 1902 death record for James A Combs does not list the given names of his parents. James B is first found with his parents in their 1850 Taylor Co, [W]VA census record. James A and Susan are not yet found in 1860 but are in the 1870 Wood Co census and the 1880 Doddridge Co census. Son James B Combs served as a private in Co D, 23rd Regt, of the Ohio Infantry (see below for abstract of his statement about his service). James B Combs married Carrie FOUSE on 7 May 1872 in Wood Co, WV.

Combs, James B. - PVT. CO. D, 23RD. REG’T. OHIO INF. I am 58 years of age, and was born in Taylor Co., State of Va., now residing at Belmont, Pleasants Co., State of W.Va., am by occupation a Farmer. I served during the late rebellion as follows: First enlisted Feb. 13 1864 as Private in Co. D, 23rd. Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf’t. for the period of 3 years, and was discharged therefrom as Private, at York Pa. Hospital on the 12th. day of Jan. 1865, by reason of Disabilities. My discharge is filed in the Pension Office at Washington, D.C. 26 May 1906 HAZEN POST 66 - GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
