SE Notes: The ancestry of James A Combs is unknown but he did come from Hampshire Co. The death record (see below) of James B Combs states his parents were James Anison Combs and Susan CORBIN. Hampshire Co, VA records show this couple were married 17 Feb. 1838. Unfortunately, the 1902 death record for James A Combs does not list the given names of his parents. James B is first found with his parents in their 1850 Taylor Co, [W]VA census record. James A and Susan are not yet found in 1860 but are in the 1870 Wood Co census and the 1880 Doddridge Co census. Son James B Combs served as a private in Co D, 23rd Regt, of the Ohio Infantry (see below for abstract of his statement about his service). James B Combs married Carrie FOUSE on 7 May 1872 in Wood Co, WV.
