Notes: It is not known if Joseph Combs, s/o John & Seth BULLITT Combs, Sr., ever lived in Fauquier; however, the sale of his Fauquier land may have been due to the death of his father, and his taking over the Stafford properties.

Will of John Combs of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County.

  Item To my grandson Nimrod, son of my son John Combs dec'd., 10 shillings sterling

  Item To my heir at law called John Combs, tho not christened, son of my son John dec'd., 10 shilling sterling.

  Item To my wife Seth Combs during her natural life the following fifteen slaves (named) which were given to her and myself by deed from her father Benjamin BULLET.

  Item To my son Cuthbert the land he lives on and which were conveyed to him heretofore by me, and also 1/3 part of the slaves devised his Mother and their future increase, after the death of his Mother.

  Item To my daughter Betty CALLMERS, Negro Tim, in the possession of her husband, which I formerly gave her, and 1/3 part of the slaves devised her mother, after the decease of her Mother.

  Item To my daughter in law Sally Combs, Negro James during her widowhood to support her children; & after her marriage or decease, I give said slave to her children to be equally divided among all her children and their heirs, which she hath had by my son John, as well those children born before as after marriage.

  Item To all the children of my son John, as well those born before as after marriage, their heirs, after decease of their Grand Mother 1/3 part of the aforesaid slaves devised her & their future increase.

  Item To my son Joseph and heirs, Negroes Jerry, Melinda and Leah now in his possession and their future increase.

  Item Lend wife Seth during her widowhood the plantation and lands I now live on on the south side of Beaver Dam run and after her marriage or decease I give the same to my son Joseph and his heirs.

  Item To my son Ennis and heirs, Negroes Harry, Venus, Hester and Dinah and their increase, and also the tract of land he now lives on, and 803 acs. of land in Kentucky, a part of the Negroes are now in his possession.

  Item To my son Benjamin Combs & to his Heirs & assigins forever, the lands which I heretofore made him deeds for, & allso the negroes I lent him & which are now in his possession. I lend to my wife Seth during her widowhood the lands I bought of my brother Joseph Combs lying on the N side of the Beaver Damn run, also the lands on the N side of the Brentown road, above & joing the lands formerly Thomas JEWELS, & the following slaves. Issac, Hannah, Jade, Will, Chloe (?) and after her marriage or decease, I give & bequeath to my son Fielding & his Heirs & assigns forever & also the future increase of the slaves but if my son Fielding should die before he arrives to the age of 21 years, not leaving Issue, I give stated Lands & Slaves & the future increase of Slaves after the death of my wife to my daughter Sarah & her heirs & assigns forever, but if my daughter Sarah Should die before she arrives to the age not leaving Issue, I give the sd land and Slaves & the future increase of slaves after the death of my wife to my four sons [sic. Joseph? Fielding?], Cuthbert, Benjamin & Ennis & to their Heirs equally to be divided

  Item I lend to my wife Seth the land I hold on the Southside road above Richard READS, also the following Slaves, Joan, Harry, Chloe Leil & Cesar during her widowhood & after her marriage or decease, I give & devise the sd lands & Slaves & the future increase of the sd Slaves to my daughter Sarah & her Heirs & assigns forever but if my daughter Sarah should die before she arrives to the age of 21 years, I give the sd Land & Slaves after the decease of my wife to my son Fielding & his Heirs & assigns forever, But if he should die before he arrives to the age of 21 years not leaving issue I give their sd Land & Slaves & their further increase, to my Sons Cuthbert, Joseph, Benjamine & Ennis, & their Heirs and Assigns forever, equally to be divided, it is also my intention in case of the death of my said daughter, as aforesaid, the future increase of the Slaves shall go in the first instance to my son Fielding & his Heirs.

    Item I lend to my wife - after any funeral expenses are paid, all the rest & residue of my Estate during her widowhood, & after her decease or marriage, I give & bequeath the same to my son Fielding & daughter, Sarah & their Heirs & assigns equally to be divided between them.

    Item. I appoint my Sons Cuthbert, Joseph, & Ennis executors to this my "will", hereby revoking all other "Wills" by me before made. In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and Seal, the Eleventh day of May 1785,

PHILLIPS (let?) his securities, in the sum of three thousand pounds, current money. probate is granted him thereof in due form.

In the presence of William KING, Abram HANKS, Wm. MILLION: At a Court held for Stafford County the 9th day of May 1785 - the above Will of George TOLSON was then presented in Court be Elizabeth & Aaron BOTTS Executors therein named, who made oath thereto according to Law & being also proved by the oaths of Wm. MILLION who declared that he saw Wm. KING (now out of the State) and Abram HANKS since deceased, attest the same as evident, the sd Will was ordered to be recorded, The sd Elizabeth then & there renouncing the provision therein made for her, and claiming that allotted by law the same was ordered to be certified & on motion of the sd executors they taking the oath and giving bond, as is by law in such case directed & required, probate thereof is granted them in due form. Notes: George TOLSON was the brother of Judith TOLSON, wife of Simon STACY (two of whose children m children of Mason Combs, Sr.), and father of George H. TOLSON who m Seth Combs (d/o John & Seth BULLITT Combs, Sr.). He is said to have married Elizabeth MILLION (source unknown), whose relationship to other MILLIONS is unknown. Of particular importance in the above record is the presence of the name, Abraham HANKS, as one Abraham HANKS is said to have been father of Sarah HANKS who m Andrew VARVELL, and who made a declaration on behalf of the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Sarah Ann MILLION, widow of William Combs, Sr.

Notes: The above was probably Benjamin & Sarah RICHARDSON Combs (s/o John, Sr. and Seth) and his brothers, Joseph and Fielding.
