The county was created from Thurston County on 13 March 1854 under the Indian name of Sawamish County. It was renamed Mason on 3 Jan. 1864. The county seat is Shelton. Mason County encompasses the southern reach of Hood Canal and many bays and inlets of southern Puget Sound and once extended to the Pacific Ocean. After settlement, the mainstay of the economy was logging. As the importance of forest products declined, the county became an important recreation destination and bedroom community to Olympia and Tacoma (Source: The Online Encyclopedia of Washington State History, HistoryLink.org).
