CHAPTER V.

THE AUSTRALIAN BRANCH OF THE ARCHDALLS.

HENRY ARCHDALL (younger son of William Archdall and Henrietta Gonne, and brother of the antiquary), born in 1724, was a goldsmith in Darby Square, Dublin, for some years. He is mentioned as a coin collector in the preface to James Simon's Essay on Irish Coins, published in 1749. He was a member of the Committee for the restoration of St. Werburgh's Church after the fire of 1754, and served as Churchwarden in 1764. After- wards, he moved to St. Michan's parish, alld was appointed Inspector to the Trustees of the Linen Manufacture. From October 1773 to March 1780, be managed all the money matters of the Linen Board. He became a Member of the Dublin Society, and died in 1790 or 1791.

Henry Archdall married firstly, in 1752, Anne, only daughter of Joseph Fuller. She died, July 31st 1773, as the result of a carriage accident, and was buried at Lusk. Her children were baptised at St. Werburgh's, and died young. He married secondly, E1izabeth Kelly, who is said to have been of the family of Castle Kelly, Co. Roscommon. By her he left five sons :—

1. The Rev. William Archdall, of whom presently.

2. The Rev. Henry Archdall, of whom hereafter.

3. John Archdall, born in 1779, and died without issue in 1834 ; having married Matilda, daughter of Capt. Oakley, R N.

4. Mervyn Archdall, born in 1782, and died in 1802.

5. Frederick Archdall, born in 1785, and died in 1800.

The Rev. WILLIAM ARCHDALL, the eldest son, was born in Dublin in 1774. He became a Pensioner at Trinity College, Dublin, July 5th, 1788, graduated B.A. in 1793, and M. A. in November 1832. He settled at Seaview, near Fethard, Co. Wexford, being Rector of Tintern from 1798 to 1843. He was collated Prebendary of Tecolme, July 6th 1873 (installed, July 21st), but resigned that preferment in the following year. He died at Stradbally, October 14th 1845.

The Rev. William Archdall married, in 1799, Louisa, one ot the seven daughters of Capt. Thomas Hewan, of the 4th Dragoon Guards, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Leslie and sister of John, 8th and last Lord Lindores. By this marriage, the Rev. William Archdall had ten children :—

1. The Ven. John Charles Archdall, Archdeacon of Ferns. He was born January 13th, and baptised at Tintern, January 20th 1804. He was tutored by his father ; became a Pensioner at Trinity College, Dublin, February znd 1824 ; graduated B.A. in 1828, and M.A. in November 1832 ; and was ordained in 1828. He was Rector of Newtownbarry, Co. Wexford, from 1836 to 1897, and Archdeacon of Ferns from 1857 to 1897. He married, in 1837, Charlotte E1iza, daughter of Thomas Dawson, M.P., of Clare Castle, Co. Armagh, and widow of the Rev. Charles Dawson. The Archdeacon died without issue, May 11th 1897, aged 93.

2. Thomas Hewan Archdall, born and baptised at Tintern, August 31st 1808. He married at Tintern, April 10th 1833, Henrietta Sarah Sutton, of the family of Longgrage, Co.
