Craighead County was created on 19 February, 1859, from Greene, Mississippi, and Poinsett Counties. Named in honor of Senator Thomas B. Craighead, it is located in the northeast part of the state. Craighead is bordered on the north by Greene County; the northeast by Dunklin County, Missouri.; the east by Mississippi County; the south by Poinsett County; the west by Jackson and Lawrence Counties. The county seat is Jonesboro.

The first COMBS record found in Craighead is a War of 1812, Military Bounty Grant, while the area was still the Territory of Arkansas. The 160 acre quarter section of land granted to John COMBS, a private in Wilson's Company, Fourth Regiment of Infantry, is located in the area of Jonesboro, one of two county seats. It is doubtful John Combs or his heirs possessed this land and there are no other COMBS records until late in the 19th Century. Though there are records of several COMBS lines moving through Craighead, only the line of Green B. COMBS of Fentress and Overton Counties in Tennessee will settle here.

Unless otherwise stated, all Records submitted by Tim Combs.
