Shipley, a parish in the hundred of West Grinstead, rape of Bramber, County of Sussex, less than 6 miles northeast of Washington, 6-1/2 northwest of Steyning, 7-1/4 northwest of Bramber and 7-1/2 northwest of Upper Beeding and almost 9 miles northwest of Coombes... "containing 1159 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rector of Coombs. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally in the Norman style." (Lewis...)
