Henry Coomes Sr. Family Information

Henry Coomes Jr. and Mary Samantha Moore

Mary Samantha Moore, b. 17 Oct. 1859, Indian Grove Twp., Livingston Co, IL, d. 9 July 1944 Agra, Phillips Co, KS.

Married 7 Oct. 1877 to Henry COOMES, Jr., who was b. 1858 in Indian GroveTwp., Livingston Co, IL Henry died 2 July 1908 on his farm in ArcadaTwp., Agra, Kansas.

Both are buried in Dubois Cemetery, north of Agra, Kansas. There is a note by the author that states the Dubois Cemetery is officially the West Cedar Cemetery per a Mr. Davis.

Henry Coomes Jr. was the son of Henry and Tabitha A. Coomes. Henry Jr. also had a brother John William Coomes. Henry Coomes Sr. is buried in Greenwood Twp., and his wife Tabitha died in Indian Grove Twp., Livingston Co, IL before the Coomes family moved west.Tabitha is buried in the Cooper Cemetery, south and west of Fairbury, IL. Her cemetery marker states Tabitha A., wife of Henry Coomes, d. 31July 1870, age 29 yrs., 3mos. & 10 days.

Two children are listed for Henry Coomes Jr.

  1. Infant - Adolphus Coomes b. 1879
  2. George Henry Coomes b. 22 Feb. 1883, Phillips Co, KS; d. 10 May 1923,Agra, Kansas. Married 26 April 1905 to Lillie Jensen at her mother's home. Both George and Lillie are buried in the DuBois Cemetery, 4 miles north of Agra.

George Henry and Lillie Coomes had ch:

  1. Vivian Irene Coomes, b. 1908, Arcada Twp., Phillips Co, KS, d.1929
  2. Letha Coomes, md. Eugene Whitney. No issue. Resided Beatrice,Nebraska
  3. Rex Coomes, resided Pasadena, Texas
  4. Infant

John William Coomes and Sarah Ann Darnell

Sarah Ann DARNALL was the 9th child of Henry and Polly M.Powell-Darnell). She was b. 13 April, 1852 in Indian Grove Twp., Livingston Co, IL. Sarah d. 16 Sept. 1898, Wood River, Nebraska, buried Wood River Cemetery on 18 Sep. 1898. Married 23 Nov. 1874 Indian Grove Twp., Liv. Co, IL, John William Coomes who was a son of Henry Coomes Sr. John William's brother Henry Coomes Jr. married Mary Samantha Moore.

John William Coomes lived at Wood River, Nebraska, after he left Illinois. He married secondly Mary Taylor and left no issue, married third to Carrie Parker, again no issue.

Children from marriage to Sarah Darnell:

  1. Pearl Rachel Coomes b. 26 Dec. 1879 near Strawn, Livingston Co, IL. She married first to Jesse T. WILCOX of Tama City, Iowa. They divorced with no issue. Pearl married secondly to William P. Mankin. Their children were: John Richard Mankin and Charles J. Mankin.

  2. Jesse Charles Coomes b. 15 March 1882, Indian Grove Twp., Livingston Co, IL. Married twice. Died and buried at Thermopolis, Wyoming. Jesse had a store at one time near Scottsbluff.
  3. Edna Alice Coomes b. 6 Oct. 1884 Indian Grove Twp., Liv. Co, IL; died 18 Oct. 1954 Grants Pass, Oregon; buried Grand Island Cemetery, Nebraska. Married 25 Nov. 1903 Wood River, Nebraska, to John Allen Mankin who was a brother to Pearl's husband William P. Mankin.

Hortensia, daughter of Henry Coomes Sr. and Tabitha A. Coomes. Hortensia and husband James W. Cunningham moved from Fairbury, IL to Agra, Kansas, then to Wood River, Nebraska (source was Nathan Davis of Agra,Kansas).

Mary Catherine Coomes, daughter of Henry Coomes Sr. and wife Tabitha A. Mary Catherine married Josiah SPENCE.

SE Note: The above family information from the DARNALL SPENCE genealogy does not mention the youngest child of Henry Coomes Sr. and Tabitha. His name was Edgar Lewis Combs. See Phillips Co, KS for his obituary.
