Buchanan County was established in 1838 from non-county area, and lies on the Kansas border (in 1838 it was adjacent to what would become Kansas Territory in 1854, and the original KS counties of Atchison and Doniphan (est. 1855)). Andrew Co MO lay to its north, Platte Co MO to the south, and DeKalb and Clinton Cos MO to the east.

1839 (Louisburg, Miami Co, KS) "Jacob Combs, farmer, P. O. Louisburg, Section 8, Township 16, Range 24, has eighty acres of land, was born in Ross Co OH in 1819, moved to Crawford County while quite young, was brought up on a farm; moved to Buchanan Co MO, in 1839, spent seven years in that locality and then moved to Iowa. In 1862, he with his family immigrated by wagon to Oregon, spending six months without sleeping in a house. He spent two years in Oregon and Washington Territory but being dissatisfied with the climate, he brought his family back to Iowa by team, spending four months on the return trip. During their travels over the then unsettled regions of the West they were exposed to attacks from numerous bands of hostile Indians then ranging over that region. In 1869 Mr. Combs moved from Iowa to Kansas and located on his present farm in Wea Township." (Excerpted from William G. Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas," BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES - LOUISBURG (CADWALLADER BROS. - KNIGHT, first published in 1883 by A. T. Andreas, Chicago, IL (William G. 12 Apr 1876 Saint Joseph Gazette - DIED. Combs - At her residence on fifth street at A.M. yesterday, Mrs. Susan N. Combs, aged 75 years. The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, at 1 P.M., today, by Rev. R. S. Campbell, friends and acquaintances are invited to attend without further notice. (Extracted by Combs Researcher Michael R. Wilson from the St Joseph Gazette, 12 APR 1876, page 1, Vol. 8, #241).

MRW Note: Susan N. Combs' probate file is located at the Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society, 412 Felix, Saint Joseph, Missouri; probate file #582. Administrator of the estate is Miss Ann L. CATLETT. The only property listed in the probate was the NE 1/4 of section 13, township 56, range 29, located in Caldwell County, Missouri. The remaining assets of the estate went to Ann L. CATLETT. From a review of the documents in the probate file, Susan N. Combs did not have much of an estate; However this does not match the land records in Buchanan County, Missouri. The following are land transactions of Susan N. Combs:

GRANTEE GRANTOR INSTRUMENT BOOK PAGE YEAR

MRW: Land transactions appear to purchase property in the beginning, but then began selling property. The other people associated with Susan N. Combs land transactions was Ann L. CATLETT. It appears that Susan N. Combs had enough money around 1851 to purchase large tracts of land in Buchanan County, Missouri. It also appears that her full name is Susan Neville Combs. On the 21 January 1854 land transaction with Ann L. CATLETT as her partner, and William P. TAYLOR as the grantee, Susan N. Combs name is recorded as Susan Neville Combs (Buchanan County, Missouri Deed Book J, page 569). Susan Neville Combs was buried in Andrew County, Missouri in the Todd Cemetery, which is also known as the CATLETT Farm (section 21 in Jefferson Township, Andrew County, Missouri), the d/o H. & M. CATLETT. She appears to have been the widow (his second wife) of Evan Ennis Combs, d 1849, Lafayette Co, MO. They had no known children.
