Ross County was established in 1798 from the counties of Adams, Hamilton and Washington. In 1803, Ross Co OH diminished in size when parts of the county went toward establishment of Franklin and Greene; in 1805, part to the new county of Highland; and in 1810 more was lost to the new counties of Fayette and Pickaway. In 1815, Pike was established with the help of Ross; in 1816, Jackson and in 1818, Hocking. In 1834, Ross regained ground from Hocking, and in 1839 from Lawrence; land lost to Vinton (plus more) in 1850.

John Combs

In the name of God Amen.

I John Combs of the County of Ross and State of Ohio being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and memory considering the certainty of Death and the uncertainty of time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence. Do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say. First and principally I commit soul unto the hands of the Allmighty God and [my] body to the earth to be decently buriet at the discretion of my executors here in after named And after my debts and all other charges paid and my wife's thirds taken out I devise and bequeath as follows the residue of my estate to be turned into money and that be paid out in land for my son Robert Combs where my executors shall think proper retaining as much in their hands as will school my son Robert to the rule of three or through the common rule of three Also to clear ten acres of land on said trach and fence the same and build a cabin on Sd [**TM note this is an abbreviation for “said” and appears to have been inserted after the copy was originally made**] land and the same to be under the care and direction of the under named executors until my son arrives at the age of twenty one years. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint Joseph Taylor and Zur Combs to be the sole executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament in testimony whereof I have hereunto set as and affixed seal this 2nd day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine. signed

John Combs (seal)

Signed sealed published and declared by John Combs the above named testator as and for his last will and testament in the presents of us who at his request in his presents and in the presents of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.

Thomas Dill Elisha Kelly

Received and recorded June [ten or tenth?] 1810 [**TM note: this is the date the will was filed, and should match the date on the index, if available]

Notes: This appears to be John Combs mar. Mary UNK, the brother of Zur Combs and son of Job Combs (Sr. found primarily in Shenandoah Co., VA). John named Zur Combs and Joseph Taylor as executors. It is possible that this Joseph Taylor is related to Barbara UNK Taylor, Job Combs' (Sr) second wife. According to this will John had only one child, a son named Robert Combs. His wife's name is not mentioned but a Mrs. Mary Combs mar. Thomas Stockton in Oct 1810 also in Ross Co., OH making her a very likely candidate.

13 Jan 1859 (Ross Co OH Marriage Records) Joseph COMBS & Elizabeth NICHOLS.

The above county marriage record was extracted by Combs Researcher Marti Combs Harrington who adds:

"The marriage of Joseph & Elizabeth NICHOLS Combs is further confirmed by the family bible of my father, Lorin E. COMBS, which also lists 'Benjamin COMBS 1774' and 'Cuthbert COMBS 1799.' It does not list them as either births or deaths. The handwriting is that of my great grandmother, Elizabeth NICHOLS Combs. According to The Combes Genealogy… by Josiah H. Combs, Joseph COMBS' parents were Cuthbert & Rebecca ALLEN Combs (m 26 Jun 1820, Clark Co, KY), s/o Benjamin Bullitt & Betsy PAYNE Combs, s/o Cuthbert B. COMBS, Sr., s/o John & Seth BULLITT Combs, Sr. of Stafford Co, VA; however, I have been unable to locate any records that document Joseph COMBS as the son of Cuthbert & Rebecca ALLEN Combs."
