Notes: Although the following is not a COMBS Record, it may be of importance due to Hammon/Hammond Families of Shenandoah Co VA & Wilkes Co NC:
06 Oct 1835 RW John HAMMON, NC Line, was b 29 Jan 1760 in Goochland Co VA, applied 6 Oct 1835 in Hamilton Co OH. His father died when he (John) was aged 3 years [ca1763]. He (John) lived in Wilkes Co NC at enlistment, later removed to KY. His mother died a short time before he moved to KY. Colly HOLBROOK of Owen Co KY made affidavit, stated he was born in 1769 in Orange Co VA & had served with John HAMMON, relationship not stated. (RW Pension File S9559, Virgil D. White, Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Abstract Files)
Note: John HAMMON'S mother had married the father of Colly HOLBROOK. Other RW HAMMOND/HAMMON records show links between Shenandoah Co VA & Wilkes Co NC, including reverse migrations that may be of importance. Also Note: Surry, Rowan & Wilkes Cos NC were overloaded with HAMMONS. Another RW John HAMMONS, b in Halifax Co VA, removed to Surry NC where he enlisted, later removed to Greenville SC, then a couple years in TN and finally to Hall Co GA, relationship to the above, if any unknown. A fourth John HAMMONS, no known relationship to any of the above, was in Surry Co NC & Grayson Co VA (county line, no move), and later to Warren Co, TN.
