Halifax County, VA was established in 1752 from Lunenburg Co VA. Descendant Counties include Pittsylvania in 1767.

It does not appear that any Combs were in Lunenburg in 1752, but an unidentified William Combs was in Halifax Co by 1756, and a George Combs by ca1768 who appears to be the same who came via Lunenburg from Amelia Co VA. A Mason Combs was in Pittsylvania Co VA in 1767, but not found in earlier Halifax or afterward in Pittsylvania (He may have been Mason Combs, Sr. who was in Rowan Co, NC by 1768). Both William Combs & George Combs owned land on or in the vicinity of Birches Creek, which is on the county line of Halifax & Pittsylvania. We have not learned yet what happened to William Combs' land, and the purchases and sales of George Combs' land don't "add up." As a result, the Combs Land of Birches Creek has become part of our Combs Deed Mapping Project (Note: For the time being, abstracts of the Combs Land Records in Halifax will be included both here and in our Combs Land of Birches Creek Report, where more detailed records and records of neighboring land will also be included).

Notes: Also a landowner on Sandy Creek was William PAIN who patented 400 acres on the South Fork of the Sandy River as early as 1747. This William PAYNE was the f/o Daniel PAYNE who m Sylvy Combs, and who later resided in Hawkins & Warren Cos TN. (The Combs have not been found together with the PAYNES of Halifax County, however, so it is not known when they first became acquainted). According to Chiarrito, this land became part of Pittsylvania Co, VA.

1782 Halifax Co VA Tax list

(Personal Property) has now been transcribed by Jeffrey Weaver at:
http://www.newrivernotes.com/va/hali1782.htm.
Excerpted from that list are:

NameTithesNegroesHorsesMulesCattle
Comer, Bildy1-1-1
Cumbo, Thos.1-1--
Combs, George152-7
Comer, William1-2-14
Comer, John1----
Comer, Thomas296-26
Combs, George1116-35
Cumbo, Charles1-2-6
Evans, David1-1-12

Notes: (1) Until this list has been viewed by a Combs Researcher (since we're more accustomed to reading and interpreting handwriting in ref our surname), we can't be certain which are Combs, Combers, Cumbos, etc. (2) Was Bildy Combs actually Biddy NANCE Combs of Wilkes Co NC? Was the second George Combs one of those who also went to Wilkes Co NC? Please see the full tax list for additional possible "clues" as to the identities of these individuals, and see Wilkes Co GA re David EVANS who may have been brother of William who m Susannah CLEMENTS (See also Montgomery Co VA re Combs-Clements relationships).

SE Notes: I have looked at the Combs entries on the 1782 tax list very carefully and submit the following adjustments and comments for these records. Deciphering the Combs entries for this county is difficult because there were also the surnames of Comer, Cumbo, and Combo as well as Combs. After scrutinizing the names and the writing, and comparing with subsequent lists, it is possible to pick out Combs versus the other names.

Source: Halifax Co., Va. Personal Property Tax Lists 1782-1799 original copy on FHC microfilm #2024563

Correction: BILDY COMER

There was no Bildy Comer. The name was Bibby Bowman and he appeared consistently in later tax lists with this same name. In the year 1782, the "B" in Bowman was very elaborate and somewhat different than other B's. The "owman" also looked liked "omer." Later years clearly showed it was Bowman.

The correction of this name eliminates the speculation that Biddy NANCE Combs of Wilkes Co., NC., records was the same as Bildy Comer of the 1782 Halifax tax list.

There were only two COMBS in the 1782 list; two George Combs and no William Combs:

p. 12
George Combs 1wm>21, 5 slaves, 4 horses, 0 mules, 16 cattle

p.14
George Combs 1wm>21, 11 slaves, 6 horses, 0 mules, 34 cattle

SE Note: The George Combs on p. 14 was in the same general part of the tax list as the names of Cheatham, Wilson, Dodson, Lumkin, Coleman, and Edmunds who are found on pp. 14-16. See the 1783 deed transaction from George Combs to Daniel Carter where these names are listed. It is likely the George Combs on p. 14 is the George of the 1783 transaction. He continues to be tracked and/or differentiated by the number of his slaves and his cattle. One David Evans was also listed on p.15.

Notes: The above Judah/Judith Combs was the d/o George & Phoebe Combs. According to The Dodsons of Northfarnum Parish, Lucas, Williams, Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC (hereinafter DNFP), Jesse DODSON was the s/o Thomas DODSON of Richmond > Fauquier > Birches Creek, Halifax Cos VA > Hawkins Co, TN. This source shows that Jesse and Judith Combs Dodson moved to Claiborne Co, TN where they became members of the Big Spring Baptist Church, whose pastor Rev. Jesse Dodson, was an uncle of Jesse's. Judah [Combs] Dodson was received by experience in April 1801 and Jesse DODSON joined by letter in August 1801. Note: This source also traces Jesse & Judah Combs Dodson further (although they eventually become "lost;" however, it appears that confusion amongst the many Jesse DODSONS may have resulted in errors so that data has not been entered here as yet (See 1818 below)

25 Sep 1832 Capt. Joshua Powell's military service in early 1781

On this 25th day of September (1832), personally appeared before the Court of Halifax County now sitting, Lewis Hailey, a resident of said County in the State aforesaid, aged Eighty-four Years who being first duly sworn according law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered Service of the United States, being drafted about the first of January 1781 (Joshua Powell's will was written on January 12, 1781) And marched from Bibb's ferry (on the Staunton River, thought to later be called Morton's Ferry) in the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia in a company of drafted Militia under command of Capt. Joshua Powell, Lieut. Charles Womack, and Ensign Hezekiah Powell, (possibly Joshua's son Hezekiah) through the Counties of Charlotte, Lunenburg, and Nottaway to the long Ordinary in the County of Dinwiddie near the town of Petersburg (understood to have been located just west of Petersburg) and was stationed at this place about one week. From there we marched through Prince George County to Cabin Point near James River (on today's Route 10) in the County of Surry, Where we joined Col. Fleming's Regiment (Col. Thomas Fleming or Lt. Col. Charles Fleming) in Gen. Muhlenburg's Brigade (Brig. Gen. John Peter Gabriel Muhlenburg, in command of all militia south of the James River). We were stationed at that place about three weeks (now four weeks total), then marched under Gen. Muhlenburg to Mackies Old field (could have been Mackie's Mill or Macclesfield, five miles from Smithfield and home of Col. Johiah Parker, Washington staff member) in the county of Isle of Wight and were stationed in that place about three weeks (now seven weeks total), then marched to the Burnt Mills (present day Everets where is located Lake Burnt Mills on the county line near the Nansemond River) in the Said County and staid One month (now eleven weeks total), then marched down to a place called Jerico (Jericho, a plantation through which the later constructed Jericho Canal was built) near Portsmouth (a skirmish took place near Portsmouth on March 19), Staid there but one day and marched back to burnt Mills in the said county of Isle of Wight. We were again stationed at that place about three weeks (now fourteen weeks total). We were discharged by Genl. Muhlenburg about the last of April or first of May 1781 (skirmishes took place at Burwell's Landing on the James River, on April 17 and 20, and Joshua Powell's replacement as Captain was recommended by the Halifax Count Court on April 20). The Whole of the time of service rendered on this tour was at least three months and 15 days (three months was the normal tour of duty for the militia). The discharge given to me by Genl. Muhlenburg is lost or mislaid and cannot be found. I have no documentary evidence but the service rendered is proved by Thomas Clardy and Moses Epps (see his statement below) Who were soldiers with me the Whole time. I acted as sergeant the whole time on this tour.

About the first of August of the Same Year, 1781, I was again drafted into the militia service of the United States and ordered to join a company of Militia that marched from Pittsylvania County commanded by Capt. William Dix, Lieut. David Hunt, and Ensign Clement McDaniel. I joined the Said Company in Charlotte or Lunenburg (County), then on the march, and went with them direct through the town of Petersburg to Jamestown and was stationed at that Place one week and marched from thence to little York and was attached to Col. Merryweather's Regiment in Genl. Stephen's Brigade and we Were Station at that Place until Lord Cornwallis Surrended himself and his Army to Genl. Washington. I was then discharged by Col. Merryweather on the 20 day of October, 1781. The whole of the Service rendered on this tour including the time allowed to travel home was at least three months. My discharge is lost and cannot be found. I have no documentary evidence but the Service rendered is Proved by Isham Farmer and William Jeffries who were soldiers with me at the same time and stationed at the Same Place. I was born in the County of Orange in the State of Virginia, I suppose in the year ____. I have no record of my age. I resided in the County of Halifax in the State of Virginia When I entered the Service of the United States in the Revolutionary war. I lived in that County when the War ended and have lived in the Same County ever since and still lives there. I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the Present and declare that my name in not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any State.
