Early Combs of East Kentucky - A "must read" for East KY Researchers (includes KY County Histories, Migration Patterns, new Combs Research Family Research Reports, Source References, etc.)

Clay Co, KY Marriage Records have (except where otherwise noted) been from one to three sources: (1) "Clay Co, KY Marriages," published in the Perry Co, KY Gen. Soc. Newsletter, Apr 1984, and extracted by David and Naomia Payne; (2) Combs-Stacy Researcher Barbara Stacy Matthews (source not stated); and (3) J.P. Downerd (published source not known). In some instances, both Source (1) and Source (3) include parents of the bride or groom. It is not clear whether this added information was part of the marriage record or added by the researcher-submitter. In the case of Source (3), the marriage record also includes annotations which are not clearly differentiated from the records themselves. Source (2) included names of bride and groom only. For the purposes of this report, unless a transcription from the original was available, Source (1) has been used. When Source (1) conflicted with either of the other sources, it has been so noted. Also Note: When a parent's name is included in a marriage record, it is usually either a consent to the marriage (of a minor child) or a declaration that the child was of age. Except where conflicts are noted, source (1) above has been used in this report.  In some instances, dates are "off" by a few days, which may reflect only the difference between the date of the marriage bond, consent and/or return. We are seeking transcriptions from original copies for all Clay Co, KY marriages, and confirmation that the parental information included in Source (1) was part of the marriage record.

Important! Due to the New Series of Combs Research Family Research Reports prepared for East Kentucky Combs Families (see above), we are in the midst of adding both records and annotations to numerous of our Kentucky Combs Counties, particularly Perry and it's predecessors, Clay and Floyd. The result is that some conflicts will be found in the annotations, some of which have been updated - some not (due to the fact that all of our Combs Counties are being actively researched, resulting in constant changes). Please let us know of any annotations that need to be updated.

Combs Researcher Sue Elfving adds from her own abstract from microfilm: One John Combs = 1 white male over 21 [himself]; one white male age 16-21 [b ca 1785-1790]; and 5 horses. No other Combs showed an extra tithe.

Of the above (selected) families:

  • (1) Danger Nicholas "8" Combs, Sr., b pre-1760, husband of Nancy GRIGSBY. Two Nicholas Combs were on the 1796 Sullivan Co, TN Tax List (which appears to have been a duplicate entry as only one Nicholas was on the 1797, and the one on the 1812 Sullivan was land only (non-resident).
  • (2) Mason "Mace" "8" Combs, born pre 1765, married 1793, Wythe Co., VA, Jane "Jennie RICHARDSON.
  • (3) Neither of the two John Combs listed above was RW John "8" Combs who was still in Lincoln Co., KY as late as Nov 1810. One may have been the same who died 1820 Floyd Co., KY, his estate administered by Elijah Combs (John & Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr.); and the other may have been a third older John Combs [III], possibly father of one of the Jeremiah Combs. See also (6) below re the possibility that he was John, son of William and Seth STACY Combs, Sr.
  • (4) Elijah "8" Combs, born 1770, VA, married bef 1799, Sallie ROARK (daughter of RW Michael & Leticia GRIGSBY Roark of Hawkins Co, TN). In 1820, Elijah Combs administered the estate of John Combs who died 1819-20, Floyd Co., KY.
  • (5) Henry "8" Combs, born 1765-1768, married Rachel CLEMENTS (daughter of Benjamin) 26 Sep 1788, Montgomery Co., VA, Mason Combs, Bondsman.
  • (6) William Combs was not RW William Combs according to the records of Lincoln Co., KY (unless he "bounced" in and out of Clay), but may have instead, based on Russell Co, VA records and the 1810 Clay Co., KY census, been William & Seth STACY Combs, Sr. If so, the John Combs listed above his name may have been his son.
  • (7) One of the two Jeremiah Combs was Jeremiah C. "Chunky" Combs, son of Nicholas & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr., married bef 1803, Syntha SUMNER, dau of Samuel and Winnifred Combs Sumner (Hicks), daughter of William and Seth STACY Combs, Sr., m 2nd (10) Robert HICKS. The other Jeremiah Combs may have been Jeremiah L. "Long" Combs, Sr., andaughter ofr Jeremiah C. "Curly" Combs, who married Elizabeth Combs (daughter of Mason "8" per The Combes Genealogy) in Clay County in 1810 (See also Early Jeremiah Combs of the Southern Frontier).
  • (8) George "8" Combs, born pre-1774, VA; married bef 1801, possibly in Hawkins Co, TN, Lydia HARRELL, dau of John HARRELL of that county. Hawkins Co., TN, before 1804, probably in Hawkins. (Will of John Harrell of Hawkins Co, TN, dtd 1814)
  • (9) RW William CORNETT married 2nd Margaret EVERAGE in 1796 in Sullivan Co., TN (See Also Below)
  • (10) Robert HIX (a.k.a. HICKS) married Winnifred Combs, the widow of Samuel SUMNER, and daughter of of William & Seth STACY Combs, Sr.
  • (11) Simon STACY, Jr. son of Simon & Judith TOLSON Stacy (Pettit), Sr.; brother-in-law of both William Combs, Sr. (married Seth STACY) and Ann Combs (m Benjamin STACY), both children of Mason & Sarah Combs, Sr. Simon STACY, Jr. married Elizabeth DAVIDSON, daughter of James of Russell Co., VA
  • (12) Richard SMITH, husband of Elitia Combs, daughter of Nicholas & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr.

  • Biram Combs, no land, 1 wm>21 and 3 horses.
  • John Combs, tithes self and one 16-21 white male (again so birth year range adjusts to 1786-1790)

(Combs Researcher Sue Elfving from microfilm who notes that this is Biram's and Shadrach's first year, and that no Biram appears again on Clay Lists until 1816)

Ed Note: The list is now at 11 Combs by surname. Additions: (1) Biram "8" Combs, son of John & Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr., probably came to Clay from (most recently) Wayne Co., KY. (2) Shadrick Combs (ancestry not proven yet, but said by The Combes Genealogy to have been son of a John Combs, possibly has arrived at age 21 this year (in which case, born 1786-1787). Subtraction: One John from the 1807 list is now missing (possibly to Floyd Co., KY?).

Combs Researcher Sue Elfving (from microfilm): Jeremiah, Elijah (+16-21), George (+16-21), Henry, Mason (+16-21), Nicholas (+16-21), William, John (6 horses), Jeremiah Combs. Note that Shadrach and Biram have gone missing. They made their first appearance in 1808 together, now they are gone together. In 1809 the county did not enumerate 16-21 category of males. Maybe a John is missing and maybe he is not missing. Simon STACY is missing this year. Elijah, George, Mason, and Nicholas have males 16-21 in 1809.

Ed Note: 9 Combs: Shadrick and Biram Combs are no longer listed.

SE Note: The additional data here is that William has no white male tithes indicating he is likely an elderly male. Entries for William, John are dated 9 Aug. An entry for a Jerh [sic] with only 1 horse is dated Aug. 10. I think this is Jeremiah who married Betsy Combs. The other Jerh [sic] Combs was listed on April 3 with the rest of the other Combs (Elijah, George, Henry, Mason, Nicholas) and he has 5 horses and looks to be the same as Jeremiah C. Combs.
14 Mar 1809 Clay Co., KY Marriage Bond. John CODY to Elizabeth SUMMER (Combs Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews)

Notes: John CODY was the son of William & Sinai STACY Cody, the latter daughter of Simon & Judith TOLSON Stacy (Pettit), Sr. Elizabeth SUMNER was the daughter of Samuel & Winnifred Combs Sumner (Hicks).
17 Jul 1809 Clay Co., KY Marriage Records. Rebecca Combs, daughter of Nicholas Combs, to John WILLIAMS. Elijah Combs, Bondsman ("Clay Co., KY Marriages," published in the Perry Co., KY Gen. Soc. Newsletter, Apr 1984) Note: Source (3) lists bride's father's name as "Danger Nick Combs," clearly an annotation.

Notes: Rebecca Combs, daughter of "Danger" Nicholas "8" & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr., is further documented by Dickey Diary Interviews.
28 May 1810 Matthew Combs married Fanny BROUND. Henry Combs, Bondsman ("Clay Co., KY Marriages," published in the Perry Co, KY Gen. Soc. Newsletter, Apr 1984) Note: According to both Source (2) and Source (3), surname was spelled BROWN. Source (3) adds that father of groom was Henry Harrison Combs, clearly an annotation, probably based on Dickey Diary Interviews.

Notes: The marriage and ancestry of Matthew Combs, son of Henry "8" & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr., is confirmed by Dickey Diary Interviews, the 1850 Breathitt Co., KY census and the 1860 Morgan Co., KY Census. Matthew is not found in his own household on the 1810 census, and may have been with his wife's family although no James or William BROWN is listed on either the 1810 census or 1811 tax list of Clay. See, however, the 1810 tax list of Floyd Co., KY for 2 James BROWNS. Matthew is found on the 1820 Clay Census.
29 May 1810 Jeremiah Combs married Betsy Combs. Henry Combs, Bondsman. ("Clay Co., KY Marriages," published in the Perry Co., KY Gen. Soc. Newsletter, Apr 1984) Note: Source (3) adds that Betsy was the daughter of Henry (Harrison) Combs, clearly an annotation, probably based on Dickey Diary Interviews.

Notes: The ancestry of Jeremiah C. "Curly" Combs is not known. His wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Combs, was the daughter of Henry "8" & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. Also note that in the 1850 Perry Census, Elizabeth is listed as born about 1798, yet no parental consent listed above. Was the census record in error or did Jeremiah marry two Elizabeth's?

SE Note: Nicholas, Henry, and John show an extra male tithe age 16-21. John Combs, with no land, again shows 1 white male >21, and 1 white male 16-21 and 7 horses. (This should be the same John that has always been in Clay Co. Those horses are a clue). Henry and Nicholas have a 16-21 tithe.
Ed Notes: 1811: 10 Combs. Those listed on the 1811 tax list with an asterisk (*) were not on the 1810 list; i.e., although 2 Jeremiah Combs were on the 1809 tax list and the 1810 Census, only one Jeremiah was on the 1810 tax list. Also note that although Matthew Combs (son of Henry "8" & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs) m in May 1810 in Clay, he is not listed either here on in the 1810 census. SE Note: First year we have had three (3) John Combs, including a Jr. and Sr. One is certainly older than the other and Jr. is likely a son since the early John was carrying an extra male tithe in 1807 and 1808. The 1810 census for John Combs shows him to have a male age 16-26 in his hh. John, son of John, was b. c1791 and married Rebecca Combs, daughter of of Mason, in 1813. His 1791 dob fits with an 1813 tax list appearance. Also we have a William Combs Jnr but no Senior listed although there were two Williams in 1812. The Jeremiah with 70a and designated Sr. is Jeremiah C. Combs, son of Danger Nick while the Jeremiah Jr. is the yet unplaced Jeremiah Combs.

  • John Combs Sr with 3 horses

SE Note: I think the above John Sr. is the same as the one who has been there all along, and a son gets enumerated for the first time with his own horse. John Jr. could have been the 16-21 (age 16) in 1807; i.e., born ca 1790.
17 Dec 1813 Clay Co., KY Marriage Records. Becca Combs, daughter of Mason Combs, to John Combs, Jr, son of John Combs. No Bondsman. ("Clay Co., KY Marriages," published in the Perry Co., KY Gen. Soc. Newsletter, Apr 1984) Note: Source (2) lists bride's given name as "Becca (Rebecca)" and date of 13 Dec 1813; and Source (3) lists her name as Rebecca.

Notes: According to The Combes Genealogy, the groom was John "Jack" Combs, son of RW John "8" Combs. He is apparently the same as John Combs, Jr. whose appearance on the 1813 tax list for the first time, may signify that he had come of age (John "Jack" was b ca 1792, thus abt 21 years of age); and the bride, Rebecca Combs, daughter of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs. If of age, however, was the inclusion of his father's name in marriage record a consent or a declaration he had reached his majority? Perry Co. deeds show her name was Rebecca and that she remarried to James FRANCIS.

The latter is documented to have been in error; i.e., the groom married (1) Jane BROWN; (2) Martha "Patsy" JOHNSON, former wife of Thomas TERRY. Inclusion of the groom's father's name was probably an annotation based on Dickey Diary Interviews.

Notes: Benjamin Combs, born ca 1793, TN, son of RW John "8" It is not known if Jane BROWN was kin to either Fannie, wife of Matthew; or Nancy, wife of Henry, Jr. (See Dickey Diary Interviews and Sewell S. Combs Manuscript).

Combs Probate records for Mason Combs decd document his name as both William D Combs and William Combs Sr., the later probably due to the fact that he was older than his brother-in-law William Combs Jr aka William B Combs. The identity of bondsman John Combs is not known but could have been Sarah's brother-in-law John Combs who had married her sister Rebecca.

Notes: Sarah aka Sally D Combs, d/o of Mason Combs and Jane RICHARDSON Perry Co deed records identify several children of Sally D Combs. One 1870 deed record identifies Sally D as the heir of Mason Combs decd. Records also identity William B aka William Sr as Sarah's husband. Sally apparently died prior to 1850, but her husband William B Combs, age 60 (b c1790) is found in the 1850 Perry County census living next door to his daughter-in-law Lurena aka Serena aka Reen Combs, the widow of Jackson D Combs, documented son of Sally D Combs.
