Morgan Co., KY was established in 1822 fromBath & Floyd Counties, and unorganized territory. It is located due north of Perry Co., KY with Breathitt in between.  No Combs are found in Morgan Co., KY Census records in 1830 or1840; however, Morgan Co., KY Combs marriages are found as early as 1829. Note: Many of the 1850 Combs appear to have been in Kentucky in 1840, just not in Morgan County; whereas others are known to have come from Russell Co., VA. Once transcription of the 1840 KY & VA Combs Census records is complete, we will hopefully be able to determine who may have moved to Morgan Co., KY between 1840 and 1850, and from where.

19 Dec 1829 (Morgan Co., KY Marriage License) Jordan J HANKS married Lydia Combs. Ministers' statement not completed or returned. (Marriage Records of Morgan County, Kentucky, 1821-1859, David May)

Notes: According to the Kentucky Explorer, Vol. 12, No. 1, May 1997, "The Hanks Family of Eastern Kentucky, " by Scott E. Sallee, Jordan J. HANKS (1806-1830) was the son of Fielding & Lydia HARPER Hanks, and grandson of Abrahm & Sarah HARPER Hanks, Sr., whose son, Abraham HANKS, Jr. (1770-?after 1814) is said to have married Mary "Polly" Combs, with other children including Nancy HANKS, wife of Thomas LINCOLN (parents of Pres. Abraham LINCOLN), and Sarah HANKS who married Andrew VARVELL, the former having been an affiant in the pension application of Sarah Ann MILLION, wife of Revolutionary Soldier William Combs, Sr. of Stafford Co., VA. None of the Hanks data has been verified by the Combs Research group as yet; however, there is a marriage record for an Abraham HANKS and Polly Combs in Caswell Co, NC dated 12 Jan 1792. No remarriage has been located for Lydia Combs Hanks, and her ancestry remains unknown.

30 Jul 1849 (Morgan Co., KY Marriage License) Willis JENKINS married Nancy Combs. Ministers's statement not completed or returned. (Marriage Records of Morgan County, Kentucky, 1821-1859, David May)

Notes: Nancy Combs Jenkins ancestry has not yet been determined although she may have been a daughter of John & Rebecca Combs of the 1850 Morgan Co., KY Census (based on naming patterns - see below). According to Combs Researcher Joye Giroux, Willis JENKINS was the son of Laney ELLIS & Solomon JENKINS, who arrived in Morgan Co., KY from Wilkes Co., NC, sometime after 1846 when a daughter was born to them in Wilkes, & 1849 when their daughter Caroline & son Willis both married in Morgan Co., KY (See Below). Question: Was Laney ELLIS Jenkins kin to Asenath ELLIS who married William Combs (son of Thomas Hix & Keziah HAYS Combs) 8 Jan 1822 in Wilkes Co NC?

Household #307(Page 108)
Richard Combs 28 M KY Farmer $600 cannot read or write
Mary 27 F KY
Sarah 11 F KY
Aaron 9 M KY
Permelia 7 F KY
Rachael 4 F KY
Frances 2 F KY
Nathan 19 M KY Laborer

Correction & addition- Nathan was previously listed as a laborer/brickmason and "cannot read or write" has been added for Richard.

Notes: Richard Combs, son of Matthew & Frances "Frankie" BROWN Combs of Clay and Breathit Counties, KY, married Mary BACK (See 1854 and later Morgan Co., KY Vital Statistics below and Dickey Diary Interview of William M. Combs who stated in 1898 that "Richard [Combs married] Polly BACK...lived and died... in Montgomery [sic] Co., Ky..."). It appears highly probable that the above Nathan Combs was Richard's younger brother who was born 19 Sep 1830, Perry Co., KY (that part which later became Breathitt), and who removed to Washington Co AR in 1853. (See the Washington Co., AR Goodspeeds' Biography of Isaac G. Combs, son of Nathan & Elizabeth CLINE Combs). Also note that Nathan is listed as a Brick mason (by JDH) as are the "other" Combs of 1850 Morgan Co., KY Census (See Below). According to their brother, Alfred Combs, Matthew & Frankie BROWN Combs had 9 children, whom Alfred listed in the following order: Aaron, Alfred, Mathew, Henrys, Richard, Isaac, Rachel, William, Nathan (See 1922 Thomas A. Combs Letter). If Alfred listed his siblings by order of age, then Richard Combs was born between 1819 and 1822, and the above Richard Combs was born ca 1822. Also Note: The Groom's Index of Perry Co., KY includes a Richard Combs with date of 1/1/1839 (Perry Co., KY Marriage Records do not include Bride's name), a date that would appear to fit perfectly with the above family. Richard & Mary are found on the 1870 Menifee Co., KY Census.

Combs Researcher Bev Houghtling adds: According to A Back Family History: The Story of a Major Branch of the Back/Bach Family, by Custer, Kenneth, and Troy Back and Dexter Dixon,1994, Richard Combs was born 18 March 1820 and died 27 January 1887 in Mt. Sterling,Montgomery Co., KY. Mary BACK, the daughter of Joseph BACK and Permelia HOGG, was born 6 February 1823 and died 26 January 1914 in Oklahoma. Joseph BACK was the brother of Isaac BACK, married before 1844, Rachel Combs, daughter of Matthew & Frances "Franky" BROWN Combs, Sr. of Breathitt Co., KY. Sarah Combs, born 13 Mar 1839, Perry Co., KY, died 11 Oct 1894, Menifee Co., KY (daughter of Richard & Mary BACK Combs), later married John W. BACK (see below) John W. BACK was the son of Alfred & Isabell CAUDILL Back (No sources are included in this book).

Correction and addition- previously, both John and Shadrick were listed as brick masons, but they are listed only as laborers; added to both John and Rebecca the "cannot read or write"

Note: Shadrach Combs married Elizabeth BOLLAND 2 Apr 1841, Tazewell Co., VA (Combs Researcher Robert Bradford). His ancestry has not yet been documented, but he is believed to have been the son of the above John & Rebecca Combs. Also note that although both the above households appear to have come to KY directly from VA (1842-1844?) , the fact that Shadrick (var. sp. Shadrach) and John are both listed as brick masons may indicate a relationship to the Richard Combs HH above. Also note that Willis & Nancy Combs Jenkins are also listed on p. 113. See also 1880 Perry Co., KY census HH of Kindrick (Kendrick) and Betty (Elizabeth) Combs which includes a Jurdan [sic] Combs, age 45. Possibly the same?

According to Combs-Stacy Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews, Mason Combs was listed next door to Archibald PRATER, and two doors down from Hugh STACY, son of Meshack STACY, Jr., families much earlier in Russell Co., VA. Although no Combs Land Grants have been located for Morgan Co., KY as yet, grants have been located for Hugh, Meshack and other STACYS. Was Moses Combs actually Matthew Combs and Frances his wife? In 1850 Breathitt Co., KY Census, Matthew is listed as age 60, born VA, with Francis listed as male [sic], born GA, with no age. In 1870, Franky is listed in Breathitt Co., KY HH of son, Henry, age 79, F, GA, and Matthew not found. According to the Goodspeeds' History of their grandson, Isaac G. 11Sep 1881 (Morgan Co., KY Marriage Records) George W WHITT married Annie Combs, witnessed by William WHITT and John HOWARD. Performed by Meridith WHITT at the home of William WHITT. (Marriage Records of Morgan County, Kentucky, 1860-1882, David May)

Sherrie Hardin Notes: George Midford Whitt married Annie Combs and that the "W" is probably a misprint. George's brother was William and his uncle was Meredith both of whom show on the marriage record. He was living at home in 1880 and by 1900 he was married to Clara. According to the census, he had only been married to Clara since 1889. My husband's father was born in 1886 and a sister in 1884 - therefore Annie would have been their mother. Everyone in the family always thought Clara was the mother, and she is even listed on my husband's father's death certificate as his mother.

Notes: Hezekiah Combs was the son of Henry and Eveline Combs Combs of Breathitt Co., KY. Hezekia hmarried Martha HUDSON daughter of Henry and Eliza CAMPBELL Hudson. Furthur notes by Delphia Lee COMBS McKelvey: Junior and Arthur were Hezekial and Martha's grandchildren, the children of Henderson "Bud" Combs who married Martha Ellen COLLINS d/o Emory and Cynthia COMBS Collins. Henderson, was shot and killed on Nov. 3, 1925 near Defiance, Perry Co., Ky. He was a law officer at the time. Hezekiah sent two of his wife's brother's (Hudson's) to Defiance to pick up grandfather's body and take him back to West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky. for burial on Hezekiah and Martha Ellen's home place. However, Hezekiah requested that the Hudson's also bring back Henderson's three children, Elsie Mae Combs, Bud Combs, Jr. and Arthur Combs to live with him. He did not take Henderson's widow, to live with him. She was welcome to come visit, which she did as often as she could. Bud and Arthur lived with Hezekiah for about eight years. Their mother had a difficult time saving enough money running a miner's boarding house to get her children returned to her. She eventually closed the boarding house and moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana where she worked cleaning houses and waiting tables in a tavern. When she had enough saved she returned to Hezekiah's and took Bud and Arthur and moved them to Ft. Wayne, Indiana with her. Her daughter Elsie Mae had married a James Messer who was put in prison for stealing cars. Elsie Mae divorced him and moved to Ft. Wayne to live with her mother. Martha Ellen COLLINS Combs eventually remarried to a Charles Cook of Ft. Wayne, Indiana (a railroader) and eventually moved to Montpelier, Williams Co., Ohio. Her children moved with her.
