It has since been known as the old John GODSEY place..."

Notes: The Combes Genealogy identifies "Long Jerry" as Jeremiah L. Combs, Sr., married (1) Nancy (Combs?) and (2) Sarah WHITELEY. Elijah Combs, Jr. (son of Elijah & Sarah ROARK Combs, Sr.) married Polly Ann Combs, a daughter of Jeremiah L., Sr. Seeking source for her having been a daughter of "Long Jerry" and a transcript or abstract of the above-referenced deeds. Ordered that Benjamin Stacy be notified by the sheriff of the county to appear here in Aug. to show cause if any why his son Felix should not be bound to sum [sic] person that will bring them up in a dis orderly way.

SE Note: Benjamin Stacy married Barbara Combs. Given the 1822 date, the only Felix around was the one born ca 1805. I do not know where he was in 1850 but he shows up with a new wife in 1860 suggesting (because of his age) something happened to his first wife. The 1850 record for Felix [Jr] shows a Calvin Stacy in his hh who could be a brother.

Notes: Tarlton, Clinton, Napoleon Bonaparte and Massingill Martin Combs were the minor sons (and youngest children) of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs (married 29 Jan 1793, Wythe Co., VA) The Dickey Diary interview of Elijah Combs CORNETT (son of Robert & Louisa Combs Cornett), states that he was born in Perry Co., Ky., March 22, 1822 and that both Mason & George Combs died shortly after his birth.* The above are Mason and Jane's still-minor children. Note: Both the ancestry of Mary "Polly" Combs (daughter of Gen. Elijah & Sarah ROARK Combs, Sr.) and her marriage to John DUFF are confirmed by the Dickey Diary Interview of Matilda DUFF Lewis. See also 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 01, 218-226.

SE NOTE: Could the early COPE family of Perry Co., Ky., be related to the Henry COPE of King George Co., Virginia, who married Ann Combs, the daughter of Archdale Combs II? The appearance of a Mason COPE in Perry Co. is interesting. Henry and Ann Combs Cope did not have any children, therefore, these Copes would have to be from Henry's family.
10 March 1823 (PC-KY COBA:17) Ordered that Daniel DAVIDSON be and is exempted from paying county levy for the further and also James COPE exempted for the further...(Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE NOTE: This Daniel DAVIDSON is the old Revolutionary War Soldier from Big Moccasin Creek in Russell Co., Va., who migrated to Clay Co., Ky. Several descendants and relatives intermarried with the Combs. Males were generally exempted from paying the county levy if they were elderly (around age 70) or suffering from health problems or infirmities.

20 Dec 1823 Marriage for Randal JOHNSON by John MORRIS (Original Source: Perry Co., Ky. Marriage Book A, p.5, transcribed and found in "Perry County, KY Marriages Books A-F, Perry County, Ky.", Genealogical and Historical Society, Inc.) SE Notes: Randal JOHNSON married Sarah "Sally" WHITELY. See the 5 Sept. 1846 court record wherein Sally Combs Cox states she was married to Randall Johnson prior to her marriage to Jeremiah Combs. They divorced in 1834 and she married Jeremiah shortly thereafter. Although listed as age 40 (b c1810) in the 1850 census, she was age 56 in the 1860 census.
1824 Perry Co, KY Tax List (partial abstraction by Sue Elfving from microfilm - does not include all Combs and not necessarily in same order as on tax list)

    John Combs, Jr. Grapevine
    John Combs, Sr. (adj.)
    John Combs, North Fork.
    Preston Combs 1wm>21

SE Notes: Same three John Combs as in 1821 and 1822. Preston Combs was not tithable in 1822, thus born 1801-3
12 Feb. 1824 (PC-KY COBA:46). Samuel HUNLEY [HUNDLEY] granted license to perform the rites of matrimony. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)
22 Apr 1824 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) James Combs married [?????]

Notes: Other researchers have stated that this James Combs is same who married Elizabeth UNKNOWN (sometimes given surname HENRY, but no documentation); possibly based on the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 185-203; however, that James and Elizabeth Combs were 42 and 35 years of age respectively in 1850, thus too young to have been the above James Combs (ages 16 and 9?). This James Combs has not yet been identified.
22 Apr 1824 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Stephen Combs married [Martha "Patsy" FRANCIS]

Notes: Stephen Combs, son of Henry "8" and Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr., born about 1805, is listed on the 1850 Breathitt Co., KY census, District 1, No. 98, with wife, Patsy, born ca 1807 (See also Perry Co., KY 1850 Census for "semi-duplicate" entry). Eldest child in HH is Stephen, born ca 1828. According to the 1937 Boyd Co., KY Death Certificate of their son, Wilson Combs, born 22 Feb 1844, Breathitt Co., KY, his parents were Stephen and Martha FRANCIS Combs.

(Extracted by Martin Combs who adds that this is Nicholas "8" Combs, Sr., husband of Nancy GRIGSBY, and that land on previous tax listsappears from the years 1821 through 1852). See also Martin's The Search for Nicholas "Danger" Combs for extensive census, land and tax information and analysis.)
1825 Perry Co, KY Tax List (Extracted by Sue Elfving - does not include all Combs)

    1825 Talton Combs 1wm>21

SE Notes: Tarlton was non-tithable in 1822. This is his first year on the Perry tax list as a tithable, thus born 1803-1804.
14 Feb 1825 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Martin Combs married [Elizabeth Combs]

Notes: Massingill Martin Combs, born ca 1809, KY, son of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs, Sr., married Elizabeth Combs (1942 Perry Death Certificate of son, Benjamin), daughter of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" Combs. The 1850 Perry Co., KY census, District 2, 151-164, lists Mart Combs, age 40, with wife, Elizabeth, age 38, and eldest child in HH, age 26. Also note, however, that although the 1850-1880 Perry Co., KY Census enumerations indicate wife, Elizabeth, the 1915 Perry Co., KY death certificate of son, Massingill Martin Combs, Jr., b 1841 [sic], indicates mother was Mary Combs (maiden name). This may simply be an error due to Martin M. having married second Polly (Mary?) KELLY (also according to The Combes Genealogy, no source listed).

16 Feb 1826 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Elijah Combs married [Polly Combs]

Notes: Elijah Combs, Jr. (son of Elijah & Sally ROARK Combs, Sr.) married Polly Combs, daughter of Jeremiah L. and Nancy Combs, Sr., as is documented by both his Perry Co, KY Estate Records and the Estate Records of her father.
20 Jul 1826 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) John L. Combs married [Polly Combs? MOSELEY?]

Notes: The above appears to have been John L. Combs of the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 078-083, aged 42, with wife, Polly, also aged 42, with eldest child in HH, aged 16. According to the 1929 Knott Co., KY Death Certificate of their daughter, Susan Combs Fuller Combs, her parents were John L. Combs and Polly MOSELEY. According to The Combes Genealogy, however, Polly was the daughter of Shadrach "Old Shade" Combs of Letcher Co., KY (1784/5-). Mae Frazier, in her book A Combs Family, with a subtitle "Descendents of Shadrack Combs born 1784-85, Son of John Combs, Jr. born February 7, 1761, A Revolutionary War Veteran," states Polly, born 1808, was the eldest daughter of Shadrick Combs. She is buried in the Combs-Morgan Cemetery. More research is needed.

25 Dec 1826 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Washington Combs married [Sally] [WHITAKER?]

Notes: The 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 145-158, lists Washington Combs (son of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs), with wife, Sally, and eldest child in HH born ca 1833. According to The Combes Genealogy, Sally was a WHITTAKER, but no source given for surname (needs further research).
25 Dec 1826 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Talton Combs married [Elizabeth ISON]

Notes: The 1850 Perry Co. KY Census, District 2, 247-268, lists Talton (Tarlton) Combs with wife Elizabeth, eldest child in HH age 20. The 1932 Perry Co., KY DC of their son, Ira Combs, documents that his mother was neè ISON. Tarleton Combs was son of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs (Dickey Diary and Perry Co., KY Records)
8 Oct 1827 - 8 Oct 1827 (Perry Co, KY DBA:258) Samuel and Mary YOUNG of PC to Biram Combs of PC, 25a… for $10… mentions a conditional line of George WATTS. Witnesses: Jesse CORNETT, Richard SMITH
