1830 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Harsey Combs married [????]

Notes: Who is the above? It is not Harvey HUNDLEY alias Combs (son of James and Sarah Combs Hundley) since he wasn't born until ca 1817.
11 Jan. 1830 (PC-KY COBA:194). John DUFF appointed guardian of Peggy DUFF orphan of Shadrach DUFF deceased...bond in the amount of $500...(Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE Note: This record confirms that Shadrach DUFF and Lucinda Combs had a daughter Margaret aka Peggy who later married 24 Oct. 1843 John J. GODSEY [see Elijah "8" Combs Family Report].
8 Feb. 1830 (PC-KY COBA:196-7). Commissioner said the administrator and administratrix [of George Combs decd] are indebted to the estate for $278.89 and 1/4 cents. Due the guardian of the four children Biram , ___ irlla [could not read name] Eliza and Elizabeth the sum of $39.84 for total of $159.39. Due to rest of legatees $119.50 and 1/4 cents from report by commissioner on the estate of George Combs. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE Note: This is an important record because it identifies a fifth daughter as indicated by both the 1820 and 1830 census records for George and Lydia. This daughter would have been a minor and unmarried at the time Jeremiah C. Combs was appointed guardian. Eliza and Elizabeth have always been used interchangeably but this record indicates they were two different daughters. A combination of later Perry Co. deeds, census records, and Owsley Co. census records show that Eliza married first Zacariah MORGAN, then Samuel Combs, and that daughter Elizabeth married Samuel HUNDLEY. The unreadable name appears to refer to Letha aka Lydia Combs who married Moses Combs or to Matilda aka Tildy Combs who had son Jeremiah "Tight Jerry" Combs by her former guardian Jeremiah C. Combs.
8 Feb. 1830 (PC-KY COBA:198). Lucinda DUFF now Lucinda ISOM to receive her dower of Shadrach DUFF. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE Note: Lucinda, the widow of Shadrach DUFF, remarried to George ISOM on 24 Oct. 1829 in Perry Co.
9 Mar 1830 Kentucky Land Grant, p. 510: Grantee: Combs, Preston; Acres: 50; Book: N-2, Page: 291; Date Survey: 3- 9-1830; County: Perry; Watercourse: North Fork of Kentucky River
9 Aug 1830 Kentucky Land Grant, p. 510: Grantee: Combs, Nicholas; Acres: 50; Book: X, Page: 510; Date Survey: 8- 9-1830; County: Perry; Watercourse: Fork of Lost [Lott?] Creek
8 Nov. 1830 (PC-KY COBA:233). Court ordered that $30 be levied for the benefit of John DICKSON for taking supportive care of Sally TOLSON an aged and infirm woman for the year 1831. Court ordered that $25 be levied for John KELLY for taking care and supporting Milly SMITH an aged and infirm woman not able to support herself. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE Note: The TOLSON family of Stafford Co., Va. was allied to the STACY family by the marriage of Judith TOLSON to Simon STACY Sr. of Stafford and Frederick Cos., Va. This Stacy family was "joined at the hip" through intermarriage with the Combs. It is not known if this Sally TOLSON and the TOLSONS in Perry Co., Ky. were part of the Stafford Co. group but the identity of this old and infirm Sally TOLSON could be interesting. Also, the identity of the aged and infirm Milly SMITH is not documented. The SMITHS were another family very closely connected with the Combs family in Perry Co. See 1834 record for a Willy SMITH. The above records indicate these two old women were born in the mid to late 1700s. Often the elderly and poor old women go undocumented.
1831-1837 (Perry Co, KY Court Minutes-3 1831 to 1837) The commenwealth versus Bonaparte Combs. On bastardy by Emilia Combs. This day came the defendent and entered into discharge of his recognizance herein, etc. etc. [ordered to pay for the support of this child.] (Researcher L. Manlove)

Notes: The date was not given by transcriber, but presumably the above wasNapoleon Bonaparte Combs, b 1808-1810, son of Mason & Jane RICHARDSON Combs, married Susan ISOM in 1833 in Perry Co. (See also his Dickey Diary Interview) Emilia [Milly?] Combs has not been identified, nor has the child. Date Needed!
11 Aug 1831 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Jeremiah COOTS [sic] married ?????

Notes: Transcriber Mack Holliday reports that the above surname could be Combs, not COOTS. If so, this is an alternate possibility for the marriage of Jeremiah L. & Sarah WHITELEY Combs, Sr. (as versus 26 Feb 1829)
2 Nov 1831 Perry Co, KY Deed Book Book A, page 501. Nicholas Combs, Sr. deeds land to [his grandson], Moses Adams Combs, for $10 on Troublesome Creek, "His X Mark". (Combs Researcher Martin G. H. Combs)

Notes: Moses Adams Combs was the son of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" Combs and Syntha SUMNER.
11 Nov 1831 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Thompson Combs married ?????

Notes: Identity of above? Is there any possibility that this could be Thompson Combs of Russell Co., VA who married by 1832, Virginia Jane "Jennie" FRANCIS? No early Thompson or Thomas Combs has been located in East KY as yet.
06 Apr 1832 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Henry Combs married [Phoebe FRANCIS?]

Notes: Possibly the second marriage of Henry "8" Combs who married (1) 26 Sep 1788, Montgomery Co., VA, Rachel CLEMENTS, daughter of Benjamin? If so, then according to Dickey Diary Interviews he married Phoebe FRANCIS.
18 Apr 1832 Kentucky Land Grant, p. 510: Grantee:Combs, Jeremiah; Acres: 50; Book: A-2, Page: 283; Date Survey: 4-18-1832; County: Perry; Watercourse: Troublesome Fork

16 Jul 1832 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) William Combs married ?????

Notes: See 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 1, 146-154, where a William Combs was married to an Elizabeth by ca 1831 based on age of eldest child in HH, in which case, this marriage was probably a later one?
5 Jan 1833 Perry Co, KY Deed Book A, page 535. Nicholas Combs, Sr. deeds land to [his grandson] Alexander Combs for "....love and affection... & one dollar". (Martin G. H. Combs)

Notes: Alexander was son of Squire Nicholas "Birdeye" Combs, Jr. and Elizabeth Combs
14 Jan 1833 (PC-KY Court Order Minute Bk3: 57-8). 14 Jan. 1833 (PC-KY COMB3:60). Wm. B. Combs in list of fines assessed by the judge between 7/24/1823 and Nov. 1831. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)

SE Note: This William B. Combs appears to be the same as William Combs Jr. that married Wilmouth Combs, daughter of Mason COMBS and Jane RICHARDSON. Refer to 1835 record listing the heirs of Mason COMBS decd. and the notes following.
11 March 1833 (PC-KY COMB3:70). Hardin Combs former coroner removed to Clay County. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.)
11 March 1833 (PC-KY COBA:315). Ordered that the court bind Susan SIZEMORE a female infant of Betty [or Betsy] SIZEMORE of 3 years old to Andrew Combs until 18 years of age. (Abstracted by Sue Elfving from original book.) <

SE Notes: 1833 Perry Co., KY tax list includes Jeremiah C Combs with 50a on Troublesome entered in the name of H. Combs. This is the third oldest Jeremiah, apparently the same who married 1810 Clay Co., KY, Elizabeth Combs, daughter of Henry "8" (See also Dickey Diary Interviews)
1833 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) John WALKER, Jr. married [not Polly Combs?]

Notes: 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 086-092, and Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics, dated 10 Aug 1853, indicate a John WALKER, age 33, and Polly, 31, with eldest child in HH born ca 1837, far too young to be this John WALKER? The 1850 Polly Combs Walker was the daughter of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" and Synthia SUMNER Combs

15 Dec 1833 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Levi PENNINGTON married [not Rachel Combs]

Notes:
The above is not the Levi PENNINGTON who married Rachel Combs. The latter marriage apparently took place in Perry Co., KY on 10 Nov 1842, and was another Levi PENNINGTON (See Owsley Co., KY).
24 Dec 1833 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Bonepart Combs m [Susan ISOM].

Notes: Napoleon Bonaparte Combs, son of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs, married Susan ISOM based on his own 1898 Dickey Diary Interview; 01 May 1843 (and additional) Owsley Co., KY Vital Statistics and 1850 Breathitt Co., KY Census, 260-260.
1834 Perry Co, KY Tax List (partial extraction from microfilm by Sue Elfving)

John Combs, 50a on Linn Fork (SE: This is the last year we tracked for Combs in the txl.)
26 Jul 1834 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Jes Combs married ?????

Notes: Identity? Were there two Jesse Combs? One was Jesse, son of Elijah Combs, Sr., married Polly BOLLING 11 Jun 1821 in Perry Co., KY (1914 Perry Co., KY DC of Alice "Elsie Dutch" Combs Davidson Combs, b 1827). Did Jesse marry again - to another Polly? (1850 Perry Co., KY Census Index) Or, could this have been Jas instead of Jes, and been an abbreviation for James?

09 Jun 1835 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Jeremiah Combs, Jr. married [Sarah KELLEY?]

Notes: Probably Jeremiah L. Combs, Jr. of 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 1, 157-171, who was married to a Sally by 1836, based on birth of eldest child in HH, and who was the husband of Sarah KELLEY per 15 Apr 1917 Perry Co., KY death certificate of their son, Andrew Combs, b 1845 (their eldest documented child born 1836-1838).

SE NOTE: The above list of suits by the administrator of the estate of Mason COMBS against the children and heirs of Mason COMBS deceased shows eleven (11) heirs which corresponds to the exact number of children (6 sons, 5 daughters) Mason was known to have had [see Mason COMBS and Jane Richardson Family Report for details]. The new information in this list is the identification of Jesse STACY as an heir indicating he was married to a daughter of Mason. This daughter was said to be named Tabitha by The COMBS Genealogy but no documentation has been found. At this time no record has been found to document the given name of Jesse Stacy's wife. Jesse STACY was a son of Benjamin STACY and Barbara Combs, daughter of R W Soldier John Combs. Mason's son Preston Combs married Nancy STACY, daughter of Benjamin STACY and Barbara Combs. The above list also clearly identifies the two William Combs who were sons-in-law as William D. Combs and William B. Combs. Other records have been unclear and confusing about the initials. Mason's youngest daughter Wilmouth was married to a William Combs Jr. and they were enumerated in the 1850 Montgomery Co., Ky. census. Mason's daughter Sarah was married to William Combs Sr. who was sometimes styled with the initial "M" or "H." One William D. Combs, age 60, and living by himself in the 1850 Perry Co. census (hh #13) in District 2 which indicates he was the one married to Sarah who must have been deceased by 1850. Since the son-in-law William Combs Sr. was William D. Combs, then the William Combs Jr. who married Wilmoth was William B. Combs.
1836 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Zachariah MORGAN (BUCHANAN in index) married [Eliza Combs

Notes: Eliza Combs, daughter of George "8" & Lydia HARRELL Combs, married (1) Zachariah MORGAN; (2) Samuel Combs (Perry Co, KY DBC: 467 & 469 and 1850 Perry Co, KY Census District 1, HH220-228). Also Note: This marriage record has been erroneously assigned in the past to Louisa Combs (daughter of Elijah Combs, Jr. and Polly Combs), born ca 1828. Although Louisa did marry a Zachariah MORGAN (documented by Perry KY Deed Book C, p. 442, dated 22 Dec 1854 and further confirmed by 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 006-006, which lists eldest child in HH as born in 1849, & 05 Nov 1855 Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics), she did not marry this Zachariah MORGAN since she was only eight years of age in 1836. See also the will of Zachariah Morgan's father, Zachariah Morgan in Clay Co., KY in 10 Apr 1841, and, also, any ongoing discussion of Eliza in the archives.
19 Mar 1836 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Joseph EVERSOLE m [not Susan Combs]

Notes: Susan Combs, wife of Joseph EVERSOLE, and daughter of Josiah H. and Polly MATTINGLY Combs, was not born until 1855, thus obviously not the above marriage. There is apparently an oral interview by Susan that has been transcribed, but not yet been located, which we continue to seek.
07 Apr 1836 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Biram Combs married [Mariah MESSER]

Notes: There are two 1836 Perry Co., KY Biram Combs marriages, the above dated 07 Apr 1836, and a second, dated 12 Sep 1836. Of these two: Biram Combs #1 married Mariah MESSER based on (a) 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 1, 007-007; (b) 15 Nov 1855 (and additional) Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics; and (c) Dickey Diary Inverview of John S. Combs) which identifies Biramas son of George and Lydia HARRELL Combs Biram Combs #2 married by 1845, Feribe UNKNOWN, and may not have been either of the 1836 Perry Co., KY marriages given 9 year lapse between marriage and birth of eldest child in HH.
11 Apr 1836 Jackson Combs m [Martha CRANK? Combs?]

Notes: Source for bride's first name is: 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 187-205, eldest child in HH born ca 1836. According to The Combes Genealogy, Martha was neè CRANK, and the groom, Jackson G. [sic], the son of Elijah "8" and Sarah ROARK Combs, Sr. Not only is CRANK undocumented, but at least one record, the 29 Jul 1852 death record of their son, Leslie (Perry Co, KY Vital Statistics) lists Jackson G.'s wife as Polly Combs [sic]. Also note that there was a Jackson D. Combs in Perry also, who died Sep 1849 Perry, and whose children and spouse both remain undocumented.

Given under my hand this 28th day of March, 1848. Martin FUGATE
    Kizey GRIGSBY
    John STACY (married Cynthia SMITH]
(Barbara Stacy Mathews adds: Cinthia STACY Smith and John STACY were brother and sister)

Note: Elitia Combs, widow of Richard SMITH, was daughter of Nicholas "8" & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr. George Combs (son of Henry "8" and Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr.) married Nancy SMITH, possibly the 1821 Perry Co., KY marriage. Also Note: Although listed as Thomas & Kizey GRIGSBY in the above record, Thomas actually went by the surname RITCHIE. According to Descendants of Alexander Crockett Ritchie 1778-1878 ,Vol. I, published by Knott County Historical & Genealogical Society & Library, Inc., 1995, Thomas was born 1804, the natural son of Betsy GRIGSBY who married in 1806, Alexander Crockett RITCHIE who raised him as his own. According to History and Families, Knott County Kentucky, Susan (Grigsby) and Alexander Crockett Ritchie, p. 341, excerpted by Louise Gaskill: "Alexander Crockett RITCHIE, born 1778 in Virginia, married around 1805 to Elizabeth Susan "Betsey" GRIGSBY, born 1782 probably in North Carolina, daughter of Nancy Combs and Benjamin GRIGSBY. They settled near the mouth of Clear Creek." Note : We have no idea why Elizabeth"Betsy" is referred to as Elizabeth Susan "Betsey" above, nor the source for her having been the daughter of a Benjamin and Nancy Combs Grigsby, nor which Ben and Nancy, nor where. Any further information would be appreciated! See also 8/5/1847 and 6/29/1850 Perry Records.
1837 (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index) Clinton Combs married [Elizabeth Combs]

Notes: Clinton Combs, son of Mason "8" & Jane RICHARDSON Combs. The 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, District 2, 147-160, and 22 Oct 1853 Perry Co., KY Records indicate Clinton m an Elizabeth, and 1853 Perry Co, KY birth record of their daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" confirms Elizabeth was neè Combs. According to The Combes Genealogy, the wife of Clinton "Grizzler" was Elizabeth "Betts," d/o Old Shadrach Combs (1784-) of Letcher Co, KY (not yet documented).

SE Note: Assume this suit refers to Jeremiah "Long Jerry" Combs and his second wife Sally WHITLEY Johnson Combs. The other Jeremiah and Sally Combs were Jeremiah Lorenzo Combs (son of Jeremiah L. COMBS Sr.) and his wife Sally KELLY. It does not make sense for the younger couple to be the defendants since neither were married beforehand.
