Mary E., 6, f, b. IL

Valparaiso PO

749/749 Stephen Combs, 64, m, farmer, b. KY
Syntha, 60, f, b. NC
William, 24, m, farmhand, b. IL
Lenia, 19, f, cook, b. IN

SE Note: Appears to be Stephen Combs and wife Cynthia aka Syntha WRIGHT of the 1850 Schuyler Co, MO census. They had 4 children in their 1850 household (Andrew-20 , Stephen-16, Sarah-14, and William-13) and the three males of the right ages are with them in Sullivan Co, MO. Census records indicate the children were born in IL. Apparently, Stephen removed to Illinois (coincidentally Schuyler Co, IL) for several years where some of his children were born and then he returned to Schuyler Co, Missouri, by 1850.

Stephen Combs m 27 Jul 1822, Cooper Co, MO, Synthey WRIGHT? Stephen Combs was on the 1830 Cooper Co, MO census, and is next found in Schuyler Co, IL in 1832 where he served as a private in 1832 in Black Hawk's War. He was still in Schuyler Co, IL per the 1840 census but had returned to Missouri by 1850 (Schuyler Co, MO census). As a War of 1812 veteran, he likely received land in Schuyler Co., IL, where war veterans received payment in land. Published genealogies have some disagreement about Stephen. According to the Combes Genealogy, one Stephen A. Combs was a s/o Stephen and Barbara ALLEN Combs of Loudoun Co, VA and Lincoln Co, KY. This source states that “Stephen A., b. 1-28-1794; m. Susan BARBER, Mary ALLY, Cynthia ---. Moved to Illinois”. According, however, to Alpheus Harlan's “History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family and Particularly of the Descendants of George and Michael Harlan, who settled in Chester County, Pa”, Gateway Press, 1988, “Stephen, b 1,28,1794, in Lincoln Co, Ky., d. 8, 6, 1869, in Sullivan Co., Ind.; m. Susan BARBER; (2) Mary ALLEN; (3) Cynthia SPIVA.” Perhaps it was Sullivan Co, MO where Stephen died instead of Indiana. ALSO, Andrew J. Combs (apparent son of Stephen) was living next door in 1860 to E. M. HARLIN.

One Stephen Combs with wife, Cynthia, served in the War of 1812 in Col. BOZEL'S or BONSAL'S Kentucky Militia. This would fit with him going to Schuyler Co., IL for land due him as a veteran.

Stephen Combs is listed as a private in troops called up in 1832 in Schuyler Co., IL for Black Hawk's War (USGenweb Schuyler Co., IL website).

Stephen E., 9, m, b. MO
James F., 7, m, b. MO
Millard F., 4, m, b. MO
Henry C., 2, m. b. MO

SE Note: Is E. M. Harlin (next door to Andrew J. Combs), formerly of Ky., part of the same HARLAN family allied to the Combs? Interesting there are children named Syntha and Stephen HARLIN. The PO addresses differ from p. 762 and p. 763; however, the household/family numbers are consecutive.
