Hillsborough County, was an original county formed in 1771. By 1823, there were 42 townships within Hillsborough County. Some of the northern townships were set off in 1823 to form Merrimack County. These townships which became part of Merrimack County were: Andover, Boscawen, Bradford, Dunbarton, Fishersfield, Henniker, Hooksett, Hopkinton, New London, Salisbury, Sutton, and Warner. Some of the Combs families may have lived in areas that became Merrimack County such as Dunbarton and may account for some of the attrition of the names found after 1820.

Medad Combs
1m > 16 including head
3 free white females

SE Note: One Medad Combs of the part of Dunstable that is now in New Hampshire is listed as a Revolutionary Soldier per "History of the Old Township of Dunstable: Including Nashua, Nashville, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield and Merrimac, N.H. and Dunstable and Tyngsborough Mass.;" by Charles J. Fox, Nashua; Charles T. Gill Publisher; 1846. Medad Combs was in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Could this Medad be the son of Medad Combs and Abigail POWERS of Dunstable, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts who married per this record: 04/03/1759 COMBS, Medad Married: Spouse: POWERS, Abigail City: Dunstable, County: Middlesex Source: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Ut, Film # 0868606, extracted by COMBS Researcher Barbara Rivas from Family Tree Maker CD231, CD 231 Online, Marriage Index: Massachusetts, 1633-1850. A second source for this marriage can be found in VITAL RECORDS of DUNSTABLE [MIDDLESEX CO., MA], Excerpted from VITAL RECORDS of DUNSTABLE, Massachusetts To 1849, The Essex Institute, Salem Mass., 1913 and transcribed by Coralynn Brown. The marriage record: Abigail Powers and Medad Combs, both of Dunstable, N.H., Apr. 3, 1759. N.R. Although the elder Medad could have been the soldier, it seems more logical that it was Medad Combs Jr., born 27 Sept. 1759.

Also (per same source) one Joseph Combs, RW soldier from Dunstable, died in the Army. Could this have been Joseph, s/o of Medad Combs and wife Abigail POWERS (see birth record below)? Birth records for five of Medad and Abigail's children are listed below: Medad [Jr.], Sarah, Theodore, Joseph, and Isaac Powers.

Is is possible that Medad Combs Sr. could be the same as Medad, b. Aug. 3, 1730., son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Combs. Information about Jonathan Combs and wife Elizabeth BLANCHARD can be found in ANCESTOR AND DESCENDANTS OF DEACON JOHN-2 BLANCHARD OF OLD DUNSTABLE (AND MERRIMACK) NH on a site for the History and Genealogy of Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.

The BLANCHARD genealogy states that Elizabeth BLANCHARD was a daughter of Capt. Joseph & Abiah (HASSELL) BLANCHARD. Elizabeth was born 15 Apr 1697 in Dunstable MA; married abt 1721 to Jonathan Combs [some genealogies state his surname is Cummings, but it was her cousin Elizabeth who m. Jonathan Cummings, for her brother, Col. Joseph BLANCHARD, deeds to his "loving nephew, John Combs of Dunstable, sixty acres of land.]. Children [COMBS] b. at Dunstable: Elizabeth, William, Medad and John.

SE Note: According to Ancestry.com's "Family Data Collection database", Joseph SHEDD was the son of Dennis SHEDD and Elizabeth Combs who was born 13 Nov. 1785, d/o of John Combs of Merrimack, Merrimack Co., NH. Elizabeth SHEDD in above record, might be Joseph's mother and Margaret Combs a relative (possibly sister to Elizabeth). No original source record provided. Elizabeth died 10 Sept. 1864 per the IGI. She and Dennis were married 2 Feb. 1806 also per IGI submission. In the IGI she is listed as a Coombs. Per the 1790 Hillsborough Co. census for Merrimack, John Combs does show 3 females in his household. Besides his wife, the other two could have been Elizabeth and Margaret.
