Notes: Based on naming patterns and later associations in Sullivan County, Tennessee, the above Joseph Combs may have been of the family of Jonathan Combs of that county. Combs Researcher Scott Combs notes that Aletha probably died and Jonathan remarried (See Below)

Jonathan Combs to Aletha McKern 05-15-1851 J. H. Martin Tennessee Early Marriages

02 Jan 1855 Carter Co, Tennessee Amanda Combs to General TAYLOR (Extracted by Combs Researcher Scott Combs from "Early East Tennessee Marriages Vol. 2 Brides" by Byron & Barbara Sistler, Nashville, TN 1987, p. 74.)

28 Oct 1856 Carter County, Tennessee. Hariet [or Harriet] J. Combs to General Jackson TAYLOR* (Extracted by Combs Researcher Scott Combs from "Early East Tennessee Marriages Vol. 2 Brides" by Byron & Barbara Sistler, Nashville, TN 1987, p. 74.

Note: Where there are two dates first is license issued, second is solemnized. * indicates that the source material included additional information of sufficient importance that the researcher is urged to obtain a copy of the source)

Notes: Possibly daughter of John & Mary BOOKER Combs of 1850 Sullivan County, Tennessee Census? Were General TAYLOR and General Jackson TAYLOR the same individual? Amanda also appears to have been the d/o John and Mary BOOKER Combs. A second marriage following death of first wife? Note also Catherine TAYLOR in 1850 HH of John and Mary BOOKER Combs.

1860 Carter Co, Tennessee Census

#146 Joseph CAMPS [sic] 55 TN M
Agnes 50 TN F
Ellen 28
Jonathan 30
William 23
Susan 25
Thomas 10
John Combs 18
Mary 20

(Abstracted by Combs Researcher Scott Combs who adds: (1) John and Mary had m during the census year, and that by 1870, John appears to have been deceased, with Mary living in Carter TN HH of Eli WATSON who was listed adjacent to Joseph CAMPS (Combs) in 1860.; (2) Even though surname is CAMPS and ages abt 10 years off, I believe the above to have been Joseph and Aggy Combs of the 1860 census. Joseph was probably deceased by 1870 when Aggy is listed as a widow in the Sullivan County, Tennessee HH of her son-in-law, J. RILEY. She was not in John RILEYS HH in 1880 (Sullivan 387b) so likely deceased by then)

Notes: In the 1870 Sullivan Co, Tennessee Census, the John RILEY HH is on the same census page as Jonathan and Thomas Combs, adding credibility to theory that Joseph of Carter was closely related to the Jonathan Combs family of Sullivan.

04-05 Oct 1860 Carter Co, Tennessee Susan Combs to Patrick H. JOHNSON (Extracted by Combs Researcher Scott Combs from "Early East Tennessee Marriages Vol. 2 Brides" by Byron & Barbara Sistler, Nashville, TN 1987, p. 74.)
