Madison County was established in 1821 from Tennessee's Western District, and originally encompassed all of Southwestern Tennessee, except Shelby Co. [Memphis]. In 1823, Gibson was established from Carroll and Madison, Hardeman from Madison and Hardin; and Haywood and Tipton from Madison. In 1845/6, Crockett was established from Dyer, Lauderdale and Madison. In 1879, Chester was established from Hardeman, Henderson, Madison and McNairy.

Notes: See the Revolutionary War Pension File of David McNEELY, h/o Rebecca DICKEY, and father of the above Nancy McNEELY Barnett, which includes mention of Augusta Co, VA; Madison Co, Kentucky; Madison Co, Alabama; and Madison County, Tennessee, and apparently included bible records, including the death of William A Combs on 30 Sep 1846, and John COOMBS [sic] on 15 May, 1847, the latter's age at death listed as abt 57 [b ca 1790]. Was the above Martha a widow of either William A. or John Combs? Her relationship to Hugh and Nancy McNEELY Barnett? See Also Barnett/Barrett-Combs-Wilbanks/Woolbanks of Sumner County, Tennessee.
